And the waw remained sound in its plural because of its soundness in the singular, and it was not assimilated in the singular because it is a designated noun and not in the form of a verb, and likewise Ḥaywah is a man's name, and it differs from hayyin, mayyit, sayyid, and jayyid,

وقال سيبويه في تصغيره ضبين، فأعله وجعله مثل أسيد، وإن كان جمعه أساود، ومن قال أسيود في التصغير لم يمتنع أن يقول ضييون؛

And Sībawayh said about its diminutive: ḍubayn, making it sound and like usayd, even though its plural is asāwid, and whoever says usayyid in the diminutive does not refrain from saying ḍuyyūn;

وضيون فيعل لا فعول، لأن باب ضيغم أكثر من باب جهور.

And ḍayūn is fay'al not fa'ūl, because the pattern of ḍayghim is more common than the pattern of jahūr.

والضانة، غير مهموز: البرة التي يبرى بها البعير إذا كانت من صفر.

And the ḍānah, not hamzated: the ring with which the camel is led if it is made of brass.

وقضينا أن ألفها واو لأنها عين.

قال شمر الخزامة إذا كانت من عقب فهي ضانة؛ وأنشد لابن ميادة: قطعت بمصلال الخشاش يردها، ... على الكره منها، ضانة وجديل

Shammir said: the khuzāmah, if it is made of horn, it is a ḍānah; and he recited for Ibn Mayyādah: I cut through the sharpest of the creeping things, turning it back... against its will, a ḍānah and a rope.

سلمة عن الفراء: الميضانة القفة، وهي المرجونة والقفعة؛ وأنشد: لا تنكحن بعدها حنانه ... ذات قتاريد، لها ميضانه

Salamah from al-Farra': al-mayḍānah is the basket, and it is al-marjūnah and al-quf'ah; and he recited: Do not marry Ḥanānah after this... she of the strong smells, she has her mayḍānah.

قال: حن وهن أي بكى، وفي المحكم في ترجمة وضن: الميضنة كالجوالق.

He said: ḥanna wa han, meaning he cried. And in al-Muḥkam, in the entry for waḍan: al-mayḍanah is like al-jawāliq.
