وما هو على الغيب بضنين
And he is not stingy with the unseen.
يقول: يأتيه غيب وهو منفوس فيه فلا يبخل به عليكم ولا يضن به عنكم
Meaning: Revelation comes to him, and he does not withhold it from you out of stinginess or reluctance.
ما هو على الغيب ببخيل أي هو، صلى الله عليه وسلم، يؤدي عن الله ويعلم كتاب الله أي ما هو ببخيل كتوم لما أوحي إليه
He is not stingy with the unseen, meaning he conveys God's message and teaches God's book; he is not a stingy concealer of what was revealed to him.
ضننت بالشيء أضن، وهي اللغة العالية، وضننت أضن ضنا وضنا وضنة ومضنة ومضنة وضنانة بخلت به، وهو ضنين به
I was stingy with a thing, and I am stingy; this is the elevated form. And I was stingy, and I am stingy, with stinginess, and reluctance, and preciousness, and preciousness, and stinginess, meaning I was miserly with it, and he is stingy with it.
وقد حكاه يعقوب، ومعلوم أن من روى حجة على من لم يرو
And Ya'qub narrated it, and it is known that the one who narrates has authority over the one who does not.
إني أجود لأقوام، وإن ضننوا
I am generous to people, even if they are stingy.
وعلق مضنة ومضنة، بكسر الضاد وفتحها، أي هو شيء نفيس مضنون به ويتنافس فيه
And 'maddanah' and 'maddanah', with kasra and fatha on the dhad, means it is a precious thing that is guarded and competed for.
والضن: الشيء النفيس المضنون به
And 'al-dunn' is the precious thing that is guarded.
ورجل ضنين: بخيل
And a 'danin' man is stingy.
ألا أصبحت أسماء جاذمة الحبل، ... وضنت علينا، والضنين من البخل
Has Asma' become one who cuts the rope? ... And she was stingy with us, and 'al-danin' is from stinginess.
وهن من الإخلاف والولعان وهو كثير
And they are from breaking promises and being overly fond, and this is common.
ويقال: فلان ضنتي من بين إخواني وضني أي أختص به وأضن بمودته
And it is said: So-and-so is my 'dinnati' among my brothers and my 'dunni', meaning I single him out and am reluctant to share his affection.
إن لله ضنائن «3». من خلقه ، وفي رواية: ضنا من خلقه يحييهم في عافية ويميتهم في عافية أي خصائص، واحدهم ضنينة، فعيلة بمعنى مفعولة، من الضن وهو ما تختصه وتضن به أي تبخل لمكانه منك وموقعه عندك
Indeed, Allah has 'danain' (special ones) from His creation. In another narration: 'Danna' from His creation, He gives them life in well-being and causes them to die in well-being, meaning special ones. Their singular is 'daninah', a feminine noun meaning what is made special and guarded out of reluctance due to its place with you and its standing in your eyes.
فلان ضني من بين إخواني، وهو شبه الاختصاص
So-and-so is my 'dunni' among my brothers, and it is akin to being singled out.
لم نقل إلا ضنا برسول الله أي بخلا وشحا أن يشاركنا فيه غيرنا
We did not say it except out of 'dannan' for the Messenger of Allah, meaning out of stinginess and greed that others should share him with us.
فقلت أخبرني بها ولا تضنن علي أي لا تبخل
So I said, 'Tell me about it and do not be stingy with me,' meaning do not be miserly.
ويقال اضطن يضطن أي بخل يبخل، وهو افتعال من الضن، وكان في الأصل اضتن، فقلبت التاء طاء
And it is said 'istatanna' and 'yastatinna', meaning to be stingy. It is an 'ifti'al' form from 'al-dunn'. It was originally 'istatanna', and the 'ta' was changed to a 'ta'.
وضننت بالمنزل ضنا وضنانة: لم أبرحه، والاضطنان افتعال من ذلك
And I stayed in the place, 'dannan' and 'dannana', meaning I did not leave it. And 'al-istatnan' is an 'ifti'al' form from that.
وأخذت الأمر بضنانته أي بطراوته لم يتغير، وهجمت على القوم وهم بضنانتهم لم يتفرقوا
And I took the matter in its 'dannana', meaning in its freshness, unchanged. And I came upon the people while they were in their 'dannana', not dispersed.
إني إذا ضنن يمشي إلى ضنن، ... أيقنت أن الفتى مود به الموت
Indeed, when the brave walks towards the brave, ... I knew that death was destined for the young man.
والمضنون: الغالية، وفي المحكم: المضنون دهن البان
And 'al-madnun' is expensive perfume. In 'Al-Muhkam': 'al-madnun' is the oil of the ban tree.
وبعد دهن البان والمضنون، وهمتا بالصبر والمرون
And after the oil of the ban tree and 'al-madnun', and they intended patience and resilience.
والمضنون والمضنونة: الغالية؛ عن الزجاج
And 'al-madnun' and 'al-madnunah' are expensive perfumes; according to Al-Zajjaj.
تضم على مضمونة فارسية ... ضفائر لا ضاحي القرون، ولا جعد
She binds with a Persian 'madmunah' ... braids that are neither exposed to the sun nor curly.
وتضحي، وما ضمت فضول ثيابها ... إلى كتفيها بائتزار، ولا عقد
And she becomes exposed, and what her clothes cover ... around her shoulders as a wrap, nor a necklace.
كأن الخزامى خالطت، في ثيابها، ... جنيا من الريحان، أو قضب الرند
As if the wild thyme mixed in her clothes ... with freshly picked basil, or branches of the randa tree.
والمضنونة: اسم لزمزم، وابن خالويه يقول في بئر زمزم المضنون، بغير هاء
And 'al-madnunah' is a name for Zamzam. And Ibn Khuluwayh calls the well of Zamzam 'al-madnun', without the 'ha'.
قيل له احفر المضنونة أي التي يضن بها لنفاستها وعزتها، وقيل للخلوق والطيب المضنونة لأنه يضن بهما
He was told to dig 'al-madnunah', meaning that which is guarded due to its preciousness and honor. And it is said for 'khuluq' and perfume because they are guarded.
إحداهما تنسب إلى ضنة بن عبد الله بن نمير، والثانية ضنة بن عبد الله بن كبير «1». بن عذرة، والله أعلم
One of them is attributed to Dannah bin Abdullah bin Numayr, and the second to Dannah bin Abdullah bin Kabir bin 'Adhra. And Allah knows best.
