Ibn Sidah said: And this is the analogy. Abu Ubaid also adopted this in the chapter on augmentation, saying: The Arabs added the 'nun' to four names. They said 'dayfan' for the guest, making it the guest himself. And 'al-dayfan' is the freeloader. We have already mentioned that in 'dayf' as well. And 'al-dafneen': the follower of the riders. And 'al-dafn', on the pattern of 'hajaf', is: a foolish man with a large build, and it is said: a foolish woman; he said:

وضَفِنَةٌ مِثْلُ الأَتَانِ ضَبْرَةٌ، ... ثَجْلَاءُ ذَاتُ خَوَاصِرٍ مَا تَشْبَعُ

And a foolish one like a she-donkey, strong, ... with wide flanks, never satisfied.

والضفن والضفن والضفنان: الأحمق الكثير اللحم الثقيل، والجمع ضفنان نادر، والأنثى ضفنة وضفنة، وكسر الفاء، عند ابن الأعرابي، أحسن.
