الصفن، بالتحريك، جلدة بيضة الإنسان، والجمع أصفان.
The safan, with harakah, is the skin of a human testicle, and its plural is asfan.
وصفنه يصفنه صفنا: شق صفنه.
And safana it, yasfinuhu, safnan: he split its scrotum.
والصفن: كالسفرة بين العيبة والقربة يكون فيها المتاع، وقيل: الصفن من أدم كالسفرة لأهل البادية يجعلون فيها زادهم، وربما استقوا به الماء كالدلو؛
And the safan: is like a سفرة between a hamper and a waterskin, in which is carried goods; and it is said: the safan is made of leather like a سفرة for the desert dwellers, in which they put their provisions, and sometimes they draw water with it like a bucket;
هرقت في حوضه صفنا ليشربه ... في داثر خلق الأعضاد أهدام .
He poured into his basin a safan for him to drink... in worn-out rags of the shoulders.
أبو عمرو: الصفن، بالضم، خريطة يكون للراعي فيها طعامه وزناده وما يحتاج إليه؛
Abu Amr: The safan, with dammah, is a bag in which the shepherd keeps his food, tinder, and what he needs;
وقيل: هي السفرة التي تجمع بالخيط، وتضم صادها وتفتح؛
And it is said: it is the سفرة that is gathered with a thread, and its sad is dammah and its fa is fatha;
وقال الفراء: هو شيء مثل الدلو أو الركوة يتوضأ فيه؛
And Al-Farra' said: it is something like a bucket or a ewer in which one performs ablution;
فخضخضت صفني في جمه، ... خياض المدابر قدحا عطوفا
So I stirred my safan in its pool, ... stirring the departing one with a gentle scoop.
ويمكن أن يكون كما قال أبو عمرو والفراء جميعا أن يستعمل الصفن في هذا وفي هذا، قال: وسمعت من يقول الصفن، بفتح الصاد، والصفنة أيضا بالتأنيث.
And it is possible that it is as Abu Amr and Al-Farra' both said, that the safan is used for this and for this, he said: And I heard some say the safan, with fatha on the sad, and the safnah also with feminine taa.
ابن الأعرابي: الصفنة، بفتح الصاد، هي السفرة التي تجمع بالخيط؛ ومنه يقال: صفن ثيابه في سرجه إذا جمعها.
Ibn Al-A'rabi: The safnah, with fatha on the sad, is the سفرة that is gathered with a thread; and from this it is said: he safana his clothes in his saddlebag if he gathered them.
وفي الحديث: أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، عوذ عليا حين ركب وصفن ثيابه في سرجه أي جمعها فيه.
And in the Hadith: that the Prophet, peace be upon him, sought refuge for Ali when he rode and safana his clothes in his saddlebag, meaning he gathered them in it.
أبو عبيد: الصفنة كالعيبة يكون فيها متاع الرجل وأداته، فإذا طرحت الهاء ضممت الصاد وقلت صفن، والصفن، بضم الصاد: الركوة.
Abu Ubaid: The safnah is like a hamper in which a man's goods and tools are kept, and if you remove the haa, you dammah the sad and say safan, and the safan, with dammah on the sad: is the ewer.
وفي حديث علي، عليه السلام: الحقني بالصفن أي بالركوة.
And in the Hadith of Ali, peace be upon him: 'Join me to the safan,' meaning to the ewer.
والصفن: جلد الأنثيين، بفتح الفاء والصاد؛
And the safan: is the skin of the testicles, with fatha on the fa and sad;
يتركن أصفان الخصى جلاجلا .
They leave the scrotums of the castrated ones rattling.
والصفنة: دلو صغيرة لها حلقة واحدة، فإذا عظمت فاسمها الصفن، والجمع أصفن؛
And the safnah: is a small bucket with one handle, and if it becomes large, its name is safan, and the plural is asfan;
غمرتها أصفنا من آجن سدم، ... كأن ما ماص منه في الفم الصبر .
I filled it with our asfan from stagnant, thick water, ... as if what was sucked from it in the mouth was bitter aloe.
والصافن: عرق ينغمس في الذراع في عصب الوظيف.
And the safin: is a vein that sinks into the arm in the nerve of the pastern.
والصافنان: عرقان في الرجلين، وقيل: شعبتان في الفخذين.
And the safinan: are two veins in the legs, and it is said: two branches in the thighs.
والصافن: عرق في باطن الصلب طولا متصل به نياط القلب، ويسمى الأكحل.
And the safin: is a vein in the interior of the spine lengthwise, connected to the heart's arteries, and it is called the akhal.
ويسمى الأكحل من البعير الصافن، وقيل: الأكحل من الدواب الأبجل.
And the akhal of a camel is called the safin, and it is said: the akhal of beasts is the abjal.
الأكحل والأبجل والصافن هي العروق التي تفصد، وهي في الرجل صافن، وفي اليد أكحل.
The akhal, the abjal, and the safin are the veins that are phlebotomized, and they are in the leg safin, and in the hand akhal.
الجوهري: الصافن عرق الساق.
Al-Jauhari: The safin is the vein of the lower leg.
ابن شميل: الصافن عرق ضخم في باطن الساق حتى يدخل الفخذ، فذلك الصافن.
Ibn Shumayl: The safin is a large vein in the interior of the lower leg until it enters the thigh, that is the safin.
وصفن الطائر الحشيش والورق يصفنه صفنا وصفنه: نضده لفراخه، والصفن: ما نضده من ذلك.
And the bird safana the grass and leaves, yasfinuhu safnan, and safanahu: it piled it up for its young, and the safan: is what it piled up of that.
كل دابة وخلق شبه زنبور ينضد حول مدخله ورقا أو حشيشا أو نحو ذلك، ثم يبيت في وسطه بيتا لنفسه أو لفراخه فذلك الصفن، وفعله التصفين.
Every animal and creature resembling a wasp piles around its entrance leaves or grass or the like, then sleeps in the middle of it a nest for itself or its young, that is the safan, and its action is tasfin.
وصفنت الدابة تصفن صفونا: قامت على ثلاث وثنت سنبك يدها الرابع.
And the animal safana, tasfinu, sufunan: it stood on three legs and bent its fourth leg.
صفن الفرس إذا قام على طرف الرابعة.
The horse safana if it stood on the tip of its fourth leg.
إذ عرض عليه بالعشي الصافنات الجياد.
When the swift safinat were displayed to him in the afternoon.
وصفن يصفن صفونا: صف قدميه.
And safana, yasfinu, sufunan: he stood with his feet together.
وخيل صفون: كقاعد وقعود؛
And safun horses: like sitting and remaining seated;
ألف الصفون، فلا يزال كأنه ... مما يقوم على الثلاث كسيرا
It is accustomed to sufuna, so it is as if... from what stands on three legs, it is broken.
أبو عمرو: صفن الرجل برجله وبيقر بيده إذا قام على طرف حافره.
Abu Amr: The man safana with his leg and biqara with his hand if he stood on the tip of his hoof.
كنا إذا صلينا مع رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، فرفع رأسه من الركوع قمنا خلفه صفونا، وإذا سجد تبعناه ، أي واقفين قد صفنا أقدامنا؛
We used to stand behind him sufuna when we prayed with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, when he raised his head from bowing, and we followed him when he prostrated, meaning standing, having safana our feet together;
فبعض الناس يقول كل صاف قدميه قائما فهو صافن، والقول الثاني أن الصافن من الخيل الذي قد قلب أحد حوافره وقام على ثلاث قوائم.
And some people say everyone who stands with his feet together is safin, and the second opinion is that the safin among horses is one whose hoof has been turned and it stands on three legs.
الصافن من الخيل القائم على ثلاث قوائم وقد أقام الرابعة على طرف الحافر، وقد قيل: الصافن القائم على الإطلاق؛
The safin among horses is one standing on three legs and holding the fourth on the tip of the hoof, and it has been said: the safin is standing absolutely;
نعلمهم بها ما علمتنا ... أبوتنا جواري، أو صفونا
We teach them by it what our ancestors taught us, free women, or our standing.
ومن سره أن يقوم له الناس صفونا أي واقفين.
And whoever is pleased that people should stand for him sufuna, meaning standing.
فلما دنا القوم صافناهم أي واقفناهم وقمنا حذاءهم.
And when the people approached, we safana-hum, meaning we stood facing them and stood opposite them.
نهى عن صلاة الصافن أي الذي يجمع بين قدميه، وقيل: هو أن يثني قدمه إلى ورائه كما يفعل الفرس إذا ثنى حافره.
He forbade the prayer of the safin, meaning one who brings his feet together, and it is said: it is to bend his foot backward as a horse does when it bends its hoof.
رأيت عكرمة يصلي وقد صفن بين قدميه.
I saw Ikrimah praying and he had safana between his feet.
فأما ابن عباس ففسرها معقولة إحدى يديها على ثلاث قوائم، والبعير إذا نحر فعل به ذلك، وأما ابن مسعود فقال: يعني قياما.
As for Ibn Abbas, he interpreted it as having one of its forelegs tied and standing on three legs, and a camel is done so when it is slaughtered, and as for Ibn Mas'ud, he said: meaning standing.
ورأيت العرب تجعل الصافن القائم على ثلاث وعلى غير ثلاث، قال: وأشعارهم تدل على أن الصفون القيام خاصة؛
And I saw the Arabs consider the safin to be standing on three and not on three, he said: and their poetry indicates that sufuna specifically means standing;
وقام المها يقفلن كل مكبل، ... كما رص أيقا مذهب اللون صافن .
And the wild cows stood, securing every captive, ... like a tethered ankle of a mixed-colored, standing one.
وأما الصائن فهو القائم على طرف حافره من الحفا، والعرب تقول لجمع الصافن صوافن وصافنات وصفون.
And as for the sa'in, it is one standing on the tip of its hoof from exhaustion, and the Arabs say for the plural of safin: sawafin, safinat, and sufuna.
وتصافن القوم الماء إذا كانوا في سفر فقل عندهم فاقتسموه على الحصاة.
And the people tasafana the water if they were on a journey and it was scarce among them, so they divided it by pebble.
وذلك إذا كانوا في سفر ولا ماء معهم ولا شيء، يقتسمونه على حصاة يلقونها في الإناء، يصب فيه من الماء بقدر ما يغمر الحصاة فيعطاه كل رجل منهم؛
And that is when they are on a journey and have no water with them or anything, they divide it by a pebble they throw into the vessel, pouring water into it enough to cover the pebble, and each man is given his share;
فلما تصافنا الإداوة، أجهشت ... إلي غضون العنبري الجراضم
And when we tasafana the waterskin, she cried out... towards the folds of the ambergris, the cutters.
تصافن القوم الماء اقتسموه بالحصص، وذلك إنما يكون بالمقلة تسقي الرجل قدر ما يغمرها، فإن كانت من ذهب أو فضة فهي البلد.
The people tasafana the water, dividing it by portions, and that is done by a small scoop that gives the man enough to cover it, and if it is of gold or silver, it is the town.
طرق النعي على صفينة غدوة، ... ونعى المعمم من بني عمرو .
The news of death arrived at Safinah in the morning, ... and the news of the turbaned one from Bani Amr.
أبو عمرو: الصفن والصفنة الشقشقة.
Abu Amr: The safan and the safnah are the shaqshaqah (guttural sound).
شهدت صفين وبئست الصفون ، وفيها وفي أمثالها لغتان: إحداهما إجراء الإعراب على ما قبل النون وتركها مفتوحة كجمع السلامة كما قال أبو وائل، والثانية أن تجعل النون حرف الإعراب وتقر الياء بحالها فنقول: هذه صفين ورأيت صفين ومررت بصفين، وكذلك تقول في قنسرين وفلسطين ويبرين.
I witnessed Siffin and how bad the sufuna were. And in it and its like there are two ways of declension: the first is to apply the case endings to what comes before the nun and leave it open like a sound masculine plural, as Abu Wa'il said, and the second is to make the nun the case ending letter and keep the ya as it is, so we say: this is Siffin, I saw Siffin, and I passed by Siffin, and similarly you say for Qinnasrin, Filastin, and Yubrin.
