وَتَشَزَّنَ فِي الأَمْرِ: تَصَعَّبَ
And he became difficult in the matter: he became stubborn/obstinate.
وَفِي حَدِيثِ لُقْمَانَ بْنِ عَادٍ: وَوَلَّاهُمْ شَزْنَهُ
And in the hadith of Luqman ibn 'Ad: and entrusted them with his hardship/severity (or his side/flank).
يُقَالُ: وَلَّيْتُهُ ظَهْرِي إِذَا جَعَلْتُهُ وَرَاءَهُ وَأَخَذْتُ أَذُبُّ عَنْهُ
It is said: I turned my back to him if I placed him behind me and began to defend him.

يُرِيدُ أَنَّهُمْ حِينَ دَهَمَهُمُ الأَمْرُ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَوَلَّاهُمْ جَانِبَهُ
He means that when the matter overwhelmed them, he turned towards them and gave them his side.
وَالشَّزْنُ: الْكَعْبُ الَّذِي يُلْعَبُ بِهِ
And ash-shazn: the ankle bone with which one plays.
كَأَنَّهُ شَزْنٌ بِالدَّوْوِ مَحْكُوكٌ
As if it were a rubbed ankle bone in the sand.
وَكَأَنَّ صَرْعَيْهَا كِعَابَ مُقَامِرٍ ... ضُرِبَتْ عَلَى شَزْنٍ، فَهِنَّ شَوَاعِي
And as if their two fallen ones were the dice of a gambler... thrown on a rough surface, and they are scattered.
وَالشَّزْنُ وَالشَّزَنُ: نَاحِيَةُ الشَّيْءِ وَجَانِبُهُ
Ash-shazn and ash-shazan: the side and flank of a thing.
وَالشَّزْنُ: الْحَرْفُ وَالْجَانِبُ وَالنَّاحِيَةُ مِثَالَ الطُّنْبِ
Ash-shazn: the edge, the side, and the direction like that of a tent pole.
وَيُقَالُ: عَنْ شَزَنٍ أَيْ عَنْ بُعْدٍ وَاعْتِرَاضٍ وَتَحَرُّفٍ
And it is said: from a distance, obliquely, and with deviation.
فَلَمَّا رَآهُ الْقَوْمُ تَشَزَّنُوا لَهُ لِيُوَسِّعُوا لَهُ
When the people saw him, they shifted aside for him to make space for him.
قَالَ شَمِرٌ: أَيْ تَحَرَّفُوا
Shamir said: meaning they moved aside.
يُقَالُ: تَشَزَّنَ الرَّجُلُ لِلرَّمْيِ إِذَا تَحَرَّفَ وَاعْتَرَضَ
It is said: A man prepares himself for shooting when he moves aside and angles himself.
وَرَمَاهُ عَنْ شَزَنٍ أَيْ تَحَرَّفَ لَهُ، وَهُوَ أَشَدُّ لِلرَّمْيِ
And he shot him from an angle, meaning he angled himself for him, which is more effective for shooting.
تَجُوبُ بِي الأَرْضَ عَلَنْدَاةٌ شَزْنٌ
A swift camel traverses the earth with me.
وَشَزَنَ فُلانٌ إِذَا نَشِطَ
And so-and-so became agile if he became lively.
وَالشَّزْنُ: النَّشَاطُ
And ash-shazn: liveliness.
وَقِيلَ: الشَّزْنُ الْمُعْيِي مِنَ الْحَفَا
And it was said: ash-shazn is the one exhausted from walking barefoot.
وَالتَّشَزُّنُ فِي الصِّرَاعِ: أَنْ يَضَعَهُ عَلَى وَرِكِهِ فَيَصْرَعَهُ، وَهُوَ التَّوَرُّكُ
And at-tashazzun in wrestling: is to place him on his hip and throw him, which is at-tawarrruk.
وَيُقَالُ: مَا أُبَالِي عَلَى أَيِّ قُطْرَيْهِ وَعَلَى أَيِّ شَزْنَيْهِ وَقَعَ، بِمَعْنًى وَاحِدٍ أَيْ جَانِبَيْهِ
And it is said: I do not care on which of its two sides or on which of its two flanks it falls, meaning one and the same, i.e., its two sides.
وَتَشَزَّنَ الرَّجُلُ صَاحِبَهُ تَشَزُّنًا وَتَشْزِينًا، عَلَى غَيْرِ قِيَاسٍ: صَرَعَهُ
And a man threw his companion tashazzunan and tashzinaan, irregularly: he threw him.
وَتَشَزَّنَ الشَّاةَ: أَضْجَعَهَا لِيَذْبَحَهَا
And he laid the sheep down to slaughter it.
وَتَشَزَّنَ لِلرَّمْيِ وَلِلأَمْرِ وَغَيْرِهِ إِذَا اسْتَعَدَّ لَهُ
And he prepared himself for shooting, for a matter, and for other things if he got ready for it.
حَتَّى أَتَشَزَّنَ
Until I prepare myself.
وَتَشَزَّنَ لَهُ أَيِ انْتَصَبَ لَهُ فِي الْخُصُومَةِ وَغَيْرِهَا
And he stood ready for him, meaning he stood up to him in dispute and otherwise.
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ السَّجْدَةَ تَشَزَّنَ النَّاسُ لِلسُّجُودِ، فَقَالَ، عَلَيْهِ الصَّلاةُ وَالسَّلامُ: إِنَّمَا هِيَ تَوْبَةُ نَبِيٍّ وَلَكِنِّي رَأَيْتُكُمْ تَشَزَّنْتُمْ، فَنَزَلَ وَسَجَدَ وَسَجَدُوا
When he reached the prostration verse, the people prepared themselves to prostrate, and he said, peace and blessings be upon him: It is but the repentance of a prophet, but I saw you preparing yourselves, so he descended, prostrated, and they prostrated.
التَّشَزُّنُ: التَّأَهُّبُ وَالتَّهَيُّؤُ لِلشَّيْءِ وَالاسْتِعْدَادُ لَهُ، مَأْخُوذٌ مِنْ عَرَضِ الشَّيْءِ وَجَانِبِهِ كَأَنَّ الْمُتَشَزِّنَ يَدَعُ الطُّمْأَنِينَةَ فِي جُلُوسِهِ وَيَقْعُدُ مُسْتَوْفِزًا عَلَى جَانِبٍ
At-tashazzun: is the readiness and preparation for a thing and getting ready for it, derived from the side of a thing, as if the one preparing leaves the calmness of his sitting and sits alertly on his side.
أَنَّ عُمَرَ دَخَلَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ، صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَوْمًا فَقَطَّبَ وَتَشَزَّنَ لَهُ
That Umar entered upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, one day, and he frowned and prepared himself for him.
حَتَّى أَتَشَزَّنَ
Until I prepare myself for the answer.
نَعَمْ شَيْءٌ الإِمَارَةُ لَوْلا قَعْقَعَةُ الْبَرْدِ وَالتَّشَزُّنُ لِلْخُطْبِ
Yes, leadership is a good thing, were it not for the clatter of cold and the readiness for grave matters.
فَتَرَامَتْ مَذْحِجٌ بِأَسِنَّتِهَا وَتَشَزَّنَتْ بِأَعِنَّتِهَا
So Madhhij hurled themselves with their spears and prepared themselves with their reins.
