Al-Layth: Al-tarkīn is the embellishment of the book, which is its decoration, and likewise the decoration of a garment with saffron and warss; and he recited:
دار كرقم الكاتب المرقن
A house like the marking of the scribe.
والمرقن: الكاتب، وقيل: المرقن الذي يحلق حلقا بين السطور كترقين الخضاب
And al-marqan: the scribe, and it is said: al-marqan is one who makes spaces between the lines like the dyeing of henna.
ورقن الشيء: زينه
And raqana the thing: he decorated it.
والرقون: النقوش
And al-ruqūn: the patterns.
والرقين، بفتح الراء ورفع النون: الدرهم، سمي بذلك للترقين الذي فيه، يعنون الخط؛ عن كراع
And al-raqīn, with fatha on the ra and damma on the nun: the dirham, so named for the markings on it, meaning the script; from Kurāʿ.
ومننه قولهم وجدان الرقين يغطي أفن الأفين
And from it is their saying: finding the dirhams covers the inability to achieve.
