Allah the Almighty only forbade that because the Jews used to say to the Prophet, peace be upon him, 'Ra'ina' or 'Ra'una', and it was an insult in their language.

وعندي أن في لغة اليهود راعونا على هذه الصيغة، يريدون الرعونة أو الأرعن

And I am of the opinion that in the Jewish language, 'Ra'una' is in this form, meaning foolishness or the foolish one.

معناه لا تقولوا كذبا وسخريا وحمقا

Its meaning is: do not say it falsely, mockingly, and foolishly.

قيل: إن راعنا كلمة كانت تجرى مجرى الهزء، فنهي المسلمون أن يلفظوا بها بحضرة النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم

It was said: 'Ra'ina' was a word used as mockery, so Muslims were forbidden to utter it in the presence of the Prophet, peace be upon him.

وذلك أن اليهود لعنهم الله كانوا اغتنموها فكانوا يسبون بها النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، في نفوسهم ويتسترون من ذلك بظاهر المراعاة منها

This is because the Jews, may Allah curse them, had exploited it, and they used to insult the Prophet, peace be upon him, in their hearts, concealing it under the guise of 'consideration'.

فأمروا أن يخاطبوه بالتعزيز والتوقير، وقيل لهم: لا تقولوا راعنا، كما يقول بعضكم لبعض، وقولوا انظرنا.

So they were commanded to address him with honor and reverence, and they were told: Do not say 'Ra'ina', as some of you say to others, but say 'Unthurna'.

والرعن: الاسترخاء.

And 'al-Ra'n': slackness.

ورعن الرحل: استرخاؤه إذا لم يحكم شده

And the slackness of the saddle: its looseness when its tying is not secured.

رحلة فيها رعن، أي استرخاء لم يحكم شدها من الخوف والعجلة.

A journey with slackness in it, meaning its tying was not secured due to fear and haste.

ورعنته الشمس: آلمت دماغه فاسترخى لذلك وغشي عليه.

And the sun affected his head: it pained his brain, so he became weak and fainted because of it.

ورعن الرجل، فهو مرعون إذا غشي عليه

And the man fainted, so he is 'mar'un' if he has fainted.

كأنه من أوار الشمس مرعون.

As if he is overcome by the heat of the sun.

أي رغن. يقال: رغن إليه وأرغن إذا مال إليه وركن
