وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: فَذَقَنَ بِسَوْطِهِ يَسْتَمِعُ.
And in another narration: So he rested his chin on his whip, listening.
يُقَالُ: ذَقَنَ عَلَى يَدِهِ وَعَلَى عَصَاهُ، بِالتَّشْدِيدِ وَالتَّخْفِيفِ، إِذَا وَضَعَهُ تَحْتَ ذَقْنِهِ وَاتَّكَأَ عَلَيْهِ.
It is said: He rested his chin on his hand or on his stick, with emphasis or without, when he placed it under his chin and leaned on it.
وَذَقَنَهُ يَذْقَنُهُ ذَقْنًا: أَصَابَ ذَقْنَهُ، فَهُوَ مَذْقُونٌ.
And dhaganahu yadhganuhu dhagnan: means he struck his chin, so he is madhgūn (chin-struck).
وَذَقَنْتُهُ بِالعَصَا ذَقْنًا: ضَرَبْتُهُ بِهَا.
And I struck him on the chin with the stick, dhagnan: I hit him with it.
وَذَقَنَهُ ذَقْنًا: قَفَدَهُ.
And dhaganahu dhagnan: means he struck him on the chin.
وَالذَّقُونُ مِنَ الإِبِلِ الَّتِي تَمِيلُ ذَقْنَهَا إِلَى الأَرْضِ تَسْتَعِينُ بِذَلِكَ عَلَى السَّيْرِ
And the dhagūn among camels is one whose chin inclines towards the ground, using that to help with the journey
أَيِ ابْتَذَلْتَ المِهْرِيَّةَ الذَّقْنَ بِوَقْعِ المَحَاجِنِ فِيهَا نَضْرِبُهَا بِهَا
Meaning: you made the fast-moving Mahra she-camel worn out by the impact of the hobbles striking it.
وَذَقَنَتِ الدَّلْوَ، بِالكَسْرِ، ذَقْنًا، فَهِيَ ذَقِنَةٌ: مَالَتْ شَفَتُهَا.
And the bucket became bent, dhaganan, so it is dhaginah: its rim tilted.
أَنْعَتُ دَلْوًا ذَقْنَى مَا تَعْتَدِلُ.
I described a bucket with a bent rim that does not straighten.
وَإِذَا خَرَزْتَ الدَّلْوَ فَجَاءَتْ شَفَتُهَا مَائِلَةً قِيلَ ذَقَنَتْ تذْقَنُ ذَقْنًا.
And if you stitch a bucket and its rim comes out tilted, it is said: it became bent, tadhganu, dhaganan.
وَفِي نَوَادِرِ العَرَبِ: ذَاقَنَنِي فُلَانٌ وَلَاقَنَنِي وَلَاغَذَنِي أَيْ لَازَمَنِي وَضَايَقَنِي.
And in the Arab's rare sayings: So-and-so contended with me, opposed me, and pressured me, meaning: he stayed with me and troubled me.
