The 'dinn' is what is large among vessels, and it is like the shape of a 'hubb' except it is longer, with its construction flat at the bottom like the shape of an egg's cone. Its plural is 'al-dinan', which are 'al-hubab'. It is said: the 'dinn' is smaller than the 'hubb', it has a base so it does not stand except if a hollow is dug for it.

والدنن: انحناء في الظهر، وهو في العنق والصدر دنو وتطأطؤ وتطامن من أصلها خلقة؛ رجل أدن وامرأة دناء، وكذلك الدابة وكل ذي أربع.

And 'al-danan' is a bending in the back, and it is in the neck and chest a stooping, bending down, and inclining from its natural creation; a man is 'adn' and a woman is 'danaa', and likewise an animal and every quadruped.

وكان الأصمعي يقول: لم يسبق أدن قط إلا أدن بني يربوع.

Al-Asma'i used to say: no 'adn' (stooped animal) was ever surpassed except the 'adn' of Banu Yarbu'.

الأدن من الدواب الذي يداه قصيرتان وعنقه قريب من الأرض؛ وأنشد:

The 'adn' among animals is that whose forelegs are short and its neck is close to the ground; and he recited:

برح بالصيني طول المن، ... وسير كل راكب أدن، معترض مثل اعتراض الطن .

The Chinese are afflicted by the length of the journey... and the gait of every rider is 'adn' (short-legged), moving sideways like the sideways movement of the 'tinn' (yoke strap).

الأدن الذي كأن صلبه دن؛ وأنشد:

The 'adn' is one whose back is as if it were a 'dinn' (bent); and he recited:

قد خطئت أم خثيم بأدن، ... بناتئ الجبهة مفسوء القطن .

Umm Khuthaym has erred with an 'adn' (bent one), with a protruding forehead and a sunken chest.

الأدن البعير المائل قدما وفي يديه قصر، وهو الدنن.

The 'adn' is the camel that leans forward and has shortness in its forelegs, and that is 'al-danan'.

كدندنة النحل في الخشرم

الدندنة أن تسمع من الرجل نغمة ولا تفهم ما يقول، وقيل: الدندنة الكلام الخفي.

'Al-dandana' is to hear a tone from a man and not understand what he says, and it is said: 'al-dandana' is hidden speech.

فقال، عليه السلام: حولهما ندندن ، وروي: عنهما ندندن.

So he said, peace be upon him: 'Around them we 'nadndin' (circle/speak)', and it was narrated: 'From them we 'nadndin' (circle/speak)'.

وهو الدندنة أرفع من الهينمة قليلا، والضمير في حولهما للجنة والنار أي في طلبهما ندندن، ومنه: دندن إذا اختلف في مكان واحد مجيئا وذهابا، وأما عنهما ندندن فمعناه أن دندنتنا صادرة عنهما وكائنة بسببهما.

And it is 'al-dandana', slightly higher than 'al-hainama'. The pronoun in 'around them' refers to Paradise and Hell, meaning we 'nadndin' (circle/speak) in seeking them. And from this: 'dandana' if one goes back and forth in one place. As for 'from them we nadndin', it means our 'dandana' originates from them and is caused by them.

'Tantana' made 'tantana' and 'dandana' made 'dandana', meaning one thing; and he recited:

ندندن مثل دندنة الذباب

And 'al-dandan' (with kasra): what is decayed and blackened of plants and trees. Some specified it as the debris of 'bahma' (shrubs) when it is blackened and old. It is said: it is the roots of old trees; Hassan bin Thabit said:

المال يغشى أناسا لا طباخ لهم، ... كالسيل يغشى أصول الدندن البالي .

Wealth covers people who have no cooking skill, ... like a flood covering the roots of the decayed 'dandan' (old trees).

إذا اسود اليبيس من القدم فهو الدندن؛ وأنشد:

When dry material becomes black from age, it is 'al-dandan'; and he recited:

مثل الدندن البالي .

Like the decayed 'dandan' (old material).

والدندن: أصول الشجر.

And 'al-dandan': the roots of trees.

أدن الرجل بالمكان إدنانا وأبن إبنانا إذا أقام، ومثله مما تعاقب فيه الباء والدال اندرى وانبرى بمعنى واحد.

A man 'adana' (resided) in a place 'idnanan', and 'abana' 'ibnanan' if he stayed. And similar to this, where 'ba' and 'dal' are interchanged, is 'indara' and 'inbara' with one meaning.

قال أبو حنيفة: قال أبو عمرو الدندن الصليان المحيل، تميمية ثابتة.

Abu Hanifa said: Abu Amr said 'al-dandan' is the dry saltwort, a fixed Tamimi term.
