دمنة الدار: أثرها.
The trace of the dwelling: its remnant.
والدمنة: آثار الناس وما سودوا، وقيل: ما سودوا من آثار البعر وغيره، والجمع دمن، على بابه، ودمن، الأخيرة كسدرة وسدر.
And the remnant: the traces of people and what they have blackened, and it is said: what they have blackened from the traces of dung and other things, and its plural is daman, according to its pattern, and damin, the latter like 'sidra' and 'sadr'.
والدمن: البعر.
And the dung: the droppings.
ودمنت الماشية المكان: بعرت فيه وبالت.
And the livestock dunged the place: they dropped dung and urinated in it.
ودمن القوم الموضع: سودوه وأثروا فيه بالدمن؛
And the people blackened the place: they made it dark and left their mark upon it with dung;
والماء متدمن إذا سقطت فيه أبعار الغنم والإبل.
And water is 'mutadammim' if the droppings of sheep and camels fall into it.
والدمن: ما تلبد من السرقين وصار كرسا على وجه الأرض.
And the dung: what has become compacted from dung and formed a crust on the ground.
والدمنة: الموضع الذي يلتبد فيه السرقين، وكذلك ما اختلط من البعر والطين عند الحوض فتلبد.
And the dung heap: the place where dung becomes compacted, and likewise what is mixed from dung and mud near the basin and becomes compacted.
راسخ الدمن على أعضاده، ... ثلمته كل ريح وسبل.
The dung is firmly set on its sides, ... every wind and rain has eroded it.
ودمنت الأرض: مثل دملتها، وقيل: الدمن اسم للجنس مثل السدر اسم للجنس.
And the land was dunged: like it was 'damalaha', and it is said: 'al-daman' is a collective noun like 'al-sadr' is a collective noun.
ويقال: فلان دمن مال كما يقال إزاء مال.
And it is said: So-and-so is 'damin' of wealth as one says 'iza' of wealth.
وفي الحديث: إياكم وخضراء الدمن، قيل: وما ذاك؟ قال: المرأة الحسناء في المنبت السوء ؛
And in the Hadith: Beware of the green plant of the dung heap, it was asked: And what is that? He said: A beautiful woman from a bad origin;
وقد ينبت المرعى على دمن الثرى، ... وتبقى حزازات النفوس كما هيا
And pasture may grow on the dung of the earth, ... while the grudges of souls remain as they are.
والدمنة: الحقد المدمن للصدر، والجمع دمن، وقيل: لا يكون الحقد دمنة حتى يأتي عليه الدهر وقد دمن عليه.
And the remnant: the resentment that has persisted in the chest, and its plural is daman, and it is said: Resentment is not a remnant until time has passed over it and it has persisted.
وقد دمنت قلوبهم، بالكسر، ودمنت على فلان أي ضغنت؛
And their hearts have become resentful, with a kasra, and they have become resentful towards so-and-so, meaning they harbored ill will;
فينبتون نبات الدمن في السيل ؛
So they grow like the plants of the dung heap in the flood;
فأتينا على جدجد متدمن أي بئر حولها الدمنة.
So we came upon a 'jadjad mutadammim' meaning a well surrounded by a dung heap.
وفي حديث النخعي: كان لا يرى بأسا بالصلاة في دمنة الغنم.
And in the narration of Al-Nakha'i: He saw no harm in praying in the dung heap of sheep.
والدمنة: بقية الماء في الحوض، وجمعها دمن؛
And the remnant: the remaining water in the basin, and its plural is daman;
ترادى على دمن الحياض، فإن تعف ... فإن المندى رحلة فركوب.
They took turns at the remnants of the basins, so if you forgive ... then the place of gathering is a journey and a ride.
والدمان: عفن النخلة وسوادها، وقيل: هو أن ينسغ النخل عن عفن وسواد.
And the rot: the decay and blackness of the palm tree, and it is said: it is when the palm tree becomes rotten and black.
إذا أنسغت النخلة عن عفن وسواد قيل قد أصابه الدمان، بالفتح.
If the palm tree becomes rotten and black, it is said that it has been afflicted with 'al-daman', with a fatha.
فإذا جاء التقاضي قالوا أصاب الثمر الدمان ؛
And when the time for payment came, they would say: the fruit was afflicted with 'al-daman';
هو بالفتح وتخفيف الميم فساد الثمر وعفنه قبل إدراكه حتى يسود، من الدمن وهو السرقين.
It is with a fatha and a lightened mim: the corruption and decay of the fruit before it ripens until it turns black, from 'al-daman' which is dung.
ويقال: إذا أطلعت النخلة عن عفن وسواد قيل أصابها الدمان، ويقال: الدمال أيضا، باللام وفتح الدال بمعناه؛
And it is said: If the palm tree shows rot and blackness, it is said that it has been afflicted with 'al-daman', and it is also said: 'al-damal', with a lam and a fatha of the dal with its meaning;
والدمان: الرماد.
And 'al-daman': the ash.
والدمان: السرجين.
And 'al-daman': the dung.
والدمان: الذي يسرقن الأرض أي يدبلها ويزبلها.
And 'al-daman': that which makes the land dunged, meaning it fertilizes and manures it.
أدمن الشراب وغيره: لم يقلع عنه؛
He persisted in drinking and other things: he did not stop;
فقلنا: أمن قبر خرجت سكنته؟ ... لك الويل أم أدمنت جحر الثعالب؟
So we said: Did you come out of a grave you inhabited? ... Woe to you, or have you persisted in inhabiting a fox's den?
ويقال: فلان يدمن الشرب والخمر إذا لزم شربها.
And it is said: So-and-so 'yudmin' drinking and wine if he persists in drinking it.
يقال: فلان يدمن كذا أي يديمه.
It is said: So-and-so 'yudmin' such-and-such, meaning he perpetuates it.
ومدمن الخمر الذي لا يقلع عن شربها.
And the addict of wine is he who does not cease drinking it.
يقال: فلان مدمن خمر أي مداوم شربها.
It is said: So-and-so is an addict of wine, meaning a persistent drinker of it.
وفي الحديث: مدمن الخمر كعابد الوثن ؛
And in the Hadith: The addict of wine is like an idol worshipper;
ويقال: دمن فلان فناء فلان تدمينا إذا غشيه ولزمه؛
And it is said: So-and-so 'dammana' so-and-so's courtyard if he frequented and lingered around it;
أرعى الأمانة لا أخون ولا أرى، ... أبدا، أدمن عرصة الإخوان
I guard the trust, I do not betray nor do I see, ... ever, I frequent the courtyard of my brothers
ودمن الرجل: رخص له؛
And 'damana' for a man: it became permissible for him;
تطاول الليل علينا دمون، ... دمون إنا معشر يمانون، وإننا لأهلنا محبون.
The night has lengthened upon us, O Damun, ... Damun, we are a people from Yemen, and indeed we are lovers of our families.
