أدرنت الإبل: رعت الدرين، وذلك في الجدب.
The camels 'adranat': they grazed on 'ad-darin', and that is during drought.
وإذا سقط كان درينا
And when it fell, it was 'darina' (dried debris).
الدرين حطام المرعى إذا تناثر وسقط على الأرض.
'Ad-darin' is the debris of the pasture when it scatters and falls on the ground.
ويقال للأرض المجدبة: أم درين
And barren land is called 'Umm Darin'.
تعالي نسمط حب دعد ونغتدي ... سواءين، والمرعى بأم درين
Come, let us tie up the love of Da'd and go in the morning ... equally, and the pasture is in 'Umm Darin'.
يقول: تعالي نلزم حبنا، وإن ضاق العيش.
He says: Come, let us cling to our love, even if life is difficult.
وإدرون الدابة: آريه.
And the 'idrun' of the animal: its lair.
رجع الفرس إلى إدرونه أي آريه.
The horse returned to its 'idrun', meaning its lair.
والإدرون: المعلف
And 'al-idrun': the manger.
ومثل عتاب رددناه إلى ... إدرونه ولؤم أصه على ألرغم موطوء الحصى مذللا
And like a reproach we returned to ... its origin, and the baseness of its father, despite the pebbles being trodden down and submissive.
ومن جعل الهمز في إدرون فاء المثال فهي رباعية مثل فرعون وبرذون، وخص بعضهم بالإدرون الخبيث من الأصول، فذهب أن اشتقاقه من الدرن؛ قال ابن سيده: وليس بشيء، وقيل: الإدرون الدرن، قال: وليس هذا معروفا.
And whoever makes the hamza in 'idrun' the 'fa' of the pattern, it is a quadriliteral like 'fir'aun' and 'bardhun'. Some have specified 'al-idrun' as the evil of origins, suggesting its derivation from 'ad-daran'; Ibn Sidah said: It is nothing. It has been said: 'al-idrun' is 'ad-daran', he said: And this is not known.
رجع إلى إدرونه أي وطنه
He returned to his 'idrun', meaning his homeland.
فلان إدرون شر وطمر شر إذا كان نهاية في الشر.
So-and-so is an 'idrun' of evil and 'tamr' of evil if he is the epitome of evil.
والدران: الثعلب.
And 'ad-daran': the fox.
وأهل الكوفة يسمون الأحمق درينة.
And the people of Kufa call the foolish person 'darina'.
درانة: من أسماء النساء، وهو فعلانة.
Darana: is among the names of women, and it is of the pattern 'fa'alana'.
النون في الدرانة إن كانت أصلية فهي فعلالة من الدرن، وإن كانت غير أصلية فهي فعلانة من الدر أو الدر، كما قالوا قران من القرى ومن القرين.
The 'nun' in 'ad-darana', if it is original, it is 'fa'alala' from 'ad-daran'. If it is not original, it is 'fa'alana' from 'ad-dar' or 'ad-dur', as they said 'quran' from 'al-qura' and from 'al-qarin'.
حل أهلي ما بين درنا فبادولى ... ، وحلت علوية بالسخال
My family settled between Darna and Badula ..., and 'Alawiyya settled with the young goats.
فقلت للشرب في درنا، وقد ثملوا: ... شيموا، وكأن يشيم الشارب الثمل؟
So I said to the drinkers in Darna, and they were drunk: ... 'Shimu', and how can a drunk drinker 'shimu'?
وإن طحنت درنية لعيالها، ... تطبطب ثدياها فطار طحينها
And if a 'darniyya' grinds for her children, ... she pats her breasts, and her flour flies.
