And the hyena's ḥiḍn: its neighbor; Al-Kumait said: As if Umm 'Amir had lurked in its vicinity, near the rope, until Aws devoured her young.

And in the narration of Urwah ibn al-Zubayr: 'I am amazed by people who sought knowledge until, when they attained it, they became nurturers for the sons of kings, meaning protectors and guardians.'

وفي حديث الأنصار يوم السقيفة حيث أرادوا أن يكون لهم شركة في الخلافة: فقالوا لأبي بكر، رضي الله عنه، أتريدون أن تحضنونا من هذا الأمر أي تخرجونا.

And in the narration of the Ansar on the day of the Saqifah, when they wanted to have a share in the caliphate: they said to Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, 'Do you want to exclude us from this matter?', meaning to expel us.

وحضنت الرجل عن هذا الأمر حضنا وحضانة إذا نحيته عنه واستبددت به وانفردت به دونه كأنه جعله في حضن منه أي جانب.

And you prevented a man from this matter, ḥaḍnan and ḥaḍānah, if you pushed him away from it and took it exclusively for yourself and separated him from it, as if you placed him in a flank of it, meaning a side.

ومننه حديث عمر أيضا يوم أتى سقيفة بني ساعدة للبيعة قال: فإذا إخواننا من الأنصار يريدون أن يختزلوا الأمر دوننا ويحضنونا عنه

And from it is the narration of Umar also, on the day he came to the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah for the pledge of allegiance, he said: 'And behold, our brothers from the Ansar want to monopolize the affair from us and exclude us from it.'

ولا تحضن زينب عن ذلك ، يعني امرأته، أي لا تحجب عن النظر في وصيته وإنفاذها

And do not exclude Zaynab from that, meaning his wife, meaning do not veil her from looking into his will and executing it.

فقال: لا تحضنها وشاورها.

So he said: 'Do not exclude her, and consult her.'

وحضن عنا هديته يحضنها حضنا: كفها وصرفها

And he withheld his gift from us, he withheld it, ḥaḍnan: he restrained it and turned it away.

وأحضن بالرجل إحضانا وأحضنه: أزرى به.

And he treated the man with contempt, iḥḍānan and he treated him with contempt: he belittled him.

والحضان: أن تقصر إحدى طبيتي العنز وتطول الأخرى جدا، فهي حضون بينة الحضان، بالكسر.

And al-ḥiḍān: that one of the goat's hindquarters be short and the other very long, so she is clearly ḥuḍūn with al-ḥiḍān, with kasra.

والحضون من الإبل والمعزى: التي قد ذهب أحد طبييها، والاسم الحضان؛ هذا قول أبي عبيد، استعمل الطبي مكان الخلف.

And al-ḥuḍūn from camels and goats: those whose one hindquarter is gone, and the noun is al-ḥiḍān; this is the saying of Abu Ubayd, who used 'ṭabī' instead of 'khalf' (hindquarter).

والحضان: أن تكون إحدى الخصيتين أعظم من الأخرى، ورجل حضون إذا كان كذلك.

And al-ḥiḍān: that one of the testicles be larger than the other, and a man is ḥuḍūn if he is so.

والحضون من الفروج: الذي أحد شفريه أعظم من الآخر.

And al-ḥuḍūn from vulvas: where one labium is larger than the other.

والأعنز الحضنية: ضرب شديد السواد، وضرب شديد الحمرة.

And al-a'nuz al-ḥuḍniyyah: a type intensely black, and a type intensely red.

وفي المثل السائر: أنجد من رأى حضنا أي من عاين هذا الجبل فقد دخل في ناحية نجد.

And in the circulating proverb: 'More Najdi than one who saw Ḥuḍn,' meaning whoever has seen this mountain has entered the region of Najd.

فما جمعت من حضن وعمرو، وما حضن وعمرو والجيادا
