And the arrows fell in the target hatnā, meaning close in position and equal; Al-Asma'i recited: As if the sound of their udders was competing... those there, these hatnā measuring, for the blood of the hind, the rocks strike them.
والحتن: متابعة السهام المقرطسة أي التي تصيب القرطاس؛ قال الشاعر: وهل غرض يبقى على حتن النبل؟

إذا وقعت خصلات في أصل القرطاس قيل تحاتنت أي تتابعت، قال: وأهل النضال يحسبون كل خصلتين مقرطسة، قال: وإذا تصارع الرجلان فصرع أحدهما وثب ثم قال: الحتنى لا خير في سهم زلج .
If several hits landed at the base of the target, it is said they fell in succession, meaning they followed each other. He said: And the archers count every two hits that strike the target. He said: And if two men wrestled and one threw the other, he would get up and say: Al-hatnā, there is no good in a swift arrow.
وقوله الحتنى أي عاود الصراع، والزالج: السهم الذي يقع بالأرض ثم يصيب القرطاس، قال: والتحاتن التباري؛ قال النابغة يصف الرياح واختلافها: شمال تجاذبها الجنوب بعرضها، ... ونزع الصبا مور الدبور يحاتن .
And his saying al-hatnā means resuming the struggle, and al-zālij: the arrow that falls to the ground and then hits the target. He said: And al-tahātun is competition; Al-Nābighah said, describing the winds and their variations: The north wind, the south pulls it across its width... and the east wind pulls, the west wind competes.
والمحتتن: الشيء المستوي لا يخالف بعضه بعضا، وقد احتتن؛ فأما ما أنشد ابن الأعرابي من قوله: كأن صوت شخبها المحتان، ... تحت الصقيع، جرش أفعوان .
And al-muḥtatan: the thing that is level, where one part does not differ from another, and it has become level; as for what Ibn Al-A'rābī recited from his saying: As if the sound of its milk was uniform... under the ice, the serpent hisses.
احتتن الشيء: استوى؛ قال الطرماح: تلك أحسابنا، إذا احتتن الخصل، ... ومد المدى مدى الأعراض.
The thing became level: it became uniform; Al-Ṭarmaḥ said: Those are our lineages, when the hit becomes uniform... and the extent extends the extent of the symptoms.
والخصلة: الإصابة.
And al-khuslah: the hit.
ويقال: فلان سن فلان وتنه وحتنه إذا كان لدته على سنه.
And it is said: So-and-so is the age of so-and-so, and his birth, and his equal, if he was born in the same year as him.
وجئ به من حتنك أي من حيث كان.
And he was brought from your origin, meaning from where he was.
وحوتنان: موضع، وقيل: حوتنانان واديان في بلاد قيس كل واحد منهما يقال له حوتنان؛ وقد ذكرهما تميم بن مقبل فقال: ثم استغاثوا بماء لا رشاء له ... من حوتنانين، لا ملح ولا زنن .
And Ḥūtanān: a place, and it is said: Ḥūtanānān are two valleys in the lands of Qays, each of them is called Ḥūtanān; and Tamīm ibn Muqbil mentioned them, saying: Then they sought help from water that had no rope... from Ḥūtanānayn, neither salty nor scarce.
ويقال: رمى القوم فوقعت سهامهم حتنى أي مستوية لم يفضل واحد منهم أصحابه.
And it is said: The people shot, and their arrows fell hatnā, meaning level, with no one among them excelling his companions.
ابن الأعرابي: رمى فأحتن إذا وقعت سهامه كلها في موضع واحد.
Ibn Al-A'rābī: He shot and achieved ahtana if all his arrows landed in one spot.
