It is said: jannahu al-laylu, and the preferred is junna 'alayhi al-laylu and ajannahu al-laylu.

واستجن فلان إذا استتر بشيء.

And so-and-so istajanna if he concealed himself with something.

وجن الميت جنا وأجنه: ستره.

And janna the dead person jannā and ajannahu: it concealed him.

يعني مدفونا أي قد ماتوا كلهم فجنوا.

Meaning buried, i.e., they all died and were buried.

والجنن، بالفتح: هو القبر لستره الميت.

And al-junun, with fatha: it is the grave for its concealment of the dead.

وأجنه: كفنه.

And ajannahu: he shrouded him.

جننته في القبر وأجننته أي واريته، وقد أجنه إذا قبره.

I jannantuhu in the grave and ajnantuhu, meaning I covered him; and ajannahu means he buried him.

والجنين: المقبور.

إذا غاب نصرانيه في جنينها، أهلت بحج فوق ظهر العجارم.

When her Christian (lover) disappeared into her womb, she cried out for pilgrimage upon the backs of the camels.

وجهرت أجنة لم تجهر.

And I revealed hidden waters that were not revealed.

القطع في ثمن المجن.

The cutting off for the price of the shield.

كتب إلي ابن عباس قلبت لابن عمك ظهر المجن.

Ibn Abbas wrote to me: You have turned the back of the shield for your cousin.

كيف تراني قالبا مجني؟ أقلب أمري ظهره للبطن.

How do you see me turning my shield? I turn my affairs inside out.

وجوههم كالمجان المطرقة.

Their faces are like the covered shields.

والجنة: ما واراك من السلاح واستترت به منه.

And al-junnah: what covers you from the weapon and you hide behind it.

يزملون جنين الضغن بينهم.

They conceal the hidden malice among them.

ما علي جنن إلا ما ترى.

There is no covering upon me except what you see.

والاجتنان؛ الاستتار.

And al-ijtinin; concealment.

والجنة: الدرع، وكل ما وقاك جنة.

And al-junnah: the breastplate, and everything that protects you is a junnah.

والجنة: خرقة تلبسها المرأة فتغطي رأسها ما قبل منه وما دبر غير وسطه، وتغطي الوجه وحلي الصدر، وفيها عينان مجوبتان مثل عيني البرقع.

And al-junnah: a cloth that a woman wears, covering her head from front to back except its middle, and covering the face and chest ornaments, and it has two eye-holes like the eyes of a veil.

Fasting is a shield.

الإمام جنة.

The Imam is a shield.

كمثل رجلين عليهما جنتان من حديد.

Like two men upon whom are two shields of iron.

وجن الناس وجنانهم: معظمهم لأن الداخل فيهم يستتر بهم.

And janna the people and their junān: their majority, because the one entering among them is concealed by them.

جنانا مسهبا وربا.

Confusing matters, extensive and fertile.

وأجننت الشيء في صدري أي أكننته.

And I ajnantu something in my chest, meaning I concealed it.

تجن بنانه أي تغطيه وتستره.

Tajunnu banānahu, meaning it covers it and conceals it.

ولقد علمت الجنة إنهم لمحضرون.

And indeed, the jinn knew that they would be brought forth.

وجعلوا بينه وبين الجنة نسبا.

And they made between Him and the jinn a relation.

من شر الوسواس الخناس الذي يوسوس في صدور الناس من الجنة، الذي هو من الجن، والناس معطوف على الوسواس.

From the evil of the whispering, retreating jinn who whispers in the breasts of people, from the jinn, and people is an appositive to the whisperer.

والجن: خلاف الإنس، والواحد جني، سميت بذلك لأنها تخفى ولا ترى.

And al-jinn: the opposite of humans, and the singular is jinnī, they are so named because they are hidden and not seen.

جن الرجل جنونا وأجنه الله، فهو مجنون، ولا تقل مجن.

Janna the man junūnan, and ajannahu Allah, so he is majnūn, and do not say majanna.

فإنك مولى أسرة لا يدينها.

For you are the master of a family that does not pay its debts.

وكأنها حليلة وخم جن منه جنونها.

And as if she were the wife of a man whose madness afflicted him.

ويحك يا جني، هل بدا لك أن ترجعي عقلي، فقد أنى لك؟

Woe to you, O jinn-like one, has it occurred to you to return my mind, for the time has come for you?

ولقد نطقت قوافيا إنسية، ولقد نطقت قوافي التجنين.

And indeed I have uttered human-like verses, and indeed I have uttered verses of the jinn.

أم به جنة.

Or is he afflicted with madness?

والاسم والمصدر على صورة واحدة، ويقال: به جنة وجنون ومجنة.

And the noun and the verbal noun are in one form, and it is said: he has junnah, junūn, and majannah.

شفاء من الداء المجنة والخبل.

A cure from the hidden disease and madness.

وقد جن جنا وجنونا واستجن.

And he janna jannā and junūnan, and istajanna.

فلم أر مثلي يستجن صبابة، من البين، أو يبكي إلى غير واصل.

I have not seen one like me hiding himself in love, from separation, or weeping to one who does not arrive.

وتجنن عليه وتجان وتجانن: أرى من نفسه أنه مجنون.

And tajannana 'alayhi, and tajāyana, and tajānana: he shows himself as if he were mad.

ما أجنه.

How mad he is!

وإن لاقيت أسلم أو غفارا.

And if you meet Aslam or Ghaffar.

وهاب جنان مسحور تردى به الحلفاء، وأتزر ائتزارا.

And he feared the enchanted eyes that the desert plants covered him with, and he wrapped himself in a garment.
