الجبان من الرجال: الذي يهاب التقدم على كل شيء، ليلا كان أو نهارا
The coward among men is he who fears to advance in anything, whether by night or by day.
والجمع جبناء، شبهوه بفعيل لأنه مثله في العدة والزيادة
And the plural is 'jubanā', they likened it to 'fūʿayl' because it is similar in number and addition.
وهو ضد الشجاعة والشجاع
And it is the opposite of courage and the courageous.
والأنثى جبان مثل حصان ورزان وجبانة، ونساء جبانات
And the feminine is 'jabān' like 'ḥiṣān' and 'razān' and 'jabānah', and women are 'jabānāt'.
وقد جبن يجبن وجبن جبنا وجبنا وجبانة وأجبنه: وجده جبانا أو حسبه إياه
And he became cowardly ('jabuna') he becomes cowardly ('yajbunu'), and he was cowardly ('jubna') with cowardice ('jubnan') and cowardice ('jubnan') and cowardice ('jabānah'), and he found him cowardly ('ajbanahu) or thought him to be so.
لله دركم يا بني سليم قاتلتها فما أجبنتها، وسألتها فما أبخلتها، وهاجيتها فما أفحمتها
May God reward you, O sons of Sulaym! I fought them and did not make them cowardly, I asked them and did not make them stingy, and I satirized them and did not silence them.
وهو يجبن أي يرمى بذلك ويقال له
And he is accused of cowardice ('yujbanu') meaning he is subjected to that and told so.
وجبنه تجبينا: نسبه إلى الجبن
And he attributed cowardice to him ('jabbana-hu') meaning he ascribed cowardice to him.
أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، احتضن أحد ابني ابنته وهو يقول: والله إنكم لتجبنون وتبخلون وتجهلون، وإنكم لمن ريحان الله
That the Prophet, peace be upon him, embraced one of his daughter's grandsons, saying: 'By God, you exhibit cowardice ('tajabannūna'), stinginess, and ignorance, and you are indeed from the flowers of God.'
يقال: جبنت الرجل وبخلته وجهلته إذا نسبته إلى الجبن والبخل والجهل
It is said: 'I attributed cowardice to the man ('jabantu-hu'), stinginess, and ignorance' if you ascribe cowardice, stinginess, and ignorance to him.
وأجبنته وأبخلته وأجهلته إذا وجدته بخيلا جبانا جاهلا
And I found him cowardly ('ajbantuhu'), stingy, and ignorant, if you found him stingy, cowardly, and ignorant.
الولد مجهلة مجبنة مبخلة
A child is a cause of ignorance, cowardice, and stinginess.
يقال الولد مجبنة مبخلة لأنه يحب البقاء والمال لأجله
It is said that a child is a cause of cowardice and stinginess because he loves survival and wealth for his sake.
وتجبن الرجل: غلظ
And the man became coarse ('tajabbana') meaning he became rough.
فلان جبان الكلب إذا كان نهاية في السخاء
So-and-so is 'jabān al-kalb' (coward of the dog) if he is the utmost in generosity.
اجتبنته حسبته جبانا
I considered him cowardly ('ijtabantuhu') meaning I thought him to be cowardly.
والجبين: فوق الصدغ، وهما جبينان عن يمين الجبهة وشمالها
And the temple ('al-jabīn') is above the temple bone; and they are two temples ('jabīnān') to the right and left of the forehead.
والجبينان حرفان مكتنفا الجبهة من جانبيها فيما بين الحاجبين مصعدا إلى قصاص الشعر
And the two temples ('al-jabīnān') are two parts flanking the forehead from its sides, between the eyebrows, ascending to the hairline.
والجبين مذكر لا غير، والجمع أجبن وأجبنة وجبن
And 'al-jabīn' is masculine and nothing else, and the plural is 'ajban', 'ajbinah', and 'jubun'.
والجبن والجبن والجبن مثقل: الذي يؤكل، والواحدة من كل ذلك بالهاء «1». جبنة
And 'al-jubn', 'al-jubun', and 'al-jubbun' (with shadda): is that which is eaten, and the singular of all of that is with 'ha' (ta' marbuta): 'jubnah'.
وتجبن اللبن: صار كالجبن
And the milk turned into cheese ('tajabbana al-laban') meaning it became like cheese.
اجتبن فلان اللبن إذا اتخذه جبنا
So-and-so made cheese ('ijtabana al-laban') if he made it into cheese.
والجبن أيضا: صفة الجبان
And 'al-jubn' is also: the characteristic of the coward.
والجبن، بضم الجيم والباء: لغة فيهما
And 'al-jubun' (with damma on jim and ba): is a dialectal variant for both.
وقد جبن الرجل، فهو جبان، وجبن أيضا، بالضم، فهو جبين
And the man became cowardly ('jabuna'), so he is 'jabān', and also 'jubina' (with damma), so he is 'jabīn'.
والجبان والجبانة، بالتشديد: الصحراء، وتسمى بهما المقابر لأنها تكون في الصحراء تسمية للشيء بموضعه
And 'al-jubbān' and 'al-jubbānah' (with shadda): are the desert, and graveyards are named after them because they are in the desert, naming a thing by its location.
والجبان: ما استوى من الأرض في ارتفاع، ويكون كريم المنبت
And 'al-jubbān': is what is level in the land with elevation, and it has noble growth.
والجبانة ما استوى من الأرض وملس ولا شجر فيه، وفيه آكام وجلاه وقد تكون مستوية لا آكام فيها ولا جلاه، ولا تكون الجبانة في الرمل ولا في الجبل، وقد تكون في القفاف والشقائق
And 'al-jubbānah' is what is level and smooth on the land and has no trees, and it has mounds and clearings, and it may be level without mounds or clearings, and 'al-jubbānah' is not found in sand or mountains, but may be found in sandy tracts and open plains.
وكل صحراء جبانة
And every desert is a 'jubbānah'.
