So do not fear that distance will separate us, ... and their bodies have not yet appeared, O drinker.

غزت سمانا فآبت ضمرا خدجا، ... من بعد ما جنبوها بدنا عققا

Our fat ones went raiding and returned lean and weak, ... after they turned them away from a fat, disobedient animal.

And the old man's body became bent and stooped.

والمبدن والمبدنة: كالبادن والبادنة، إلا أن المبدنة صيغة مفعول.

And the 'mubdan' and 'mubdanah': like the 'badin' and 'badinah', except that 'mubdanah' is in the form of a passive participle.

والمبدان: الشكور السريع السمن؛

And the 'mubdan': the grateful one who quickly gains weight;

وإني لمبدان، إذا القوم أخمصوا، ... وفي، إذا اشتد الزمان، شحوب .

And indeed, I am one who gains weight, when the people are hungry, ... and in me, when times are harsh, is leanness.

وبدن الرجل: أسن وضعف.

And a man's 'badana': he aged and weakened.

إني قد بدنت ؛ هكذا روي بالتخفيف بدنت؛ قال الأموي: إنما هو بدنت، بالتشديد، يعني كبرت وأسننت، والتخفيف من البدانة، وهي كثرة اللحم، وبدنت أي سمنت وضخمت.

Indeed, I have become corpulent; thus it is narrated with the lightened form 'badantu'; Al-Amuwi said: it is actually 'badadantu', with the emphasis, meaning I have grown old and aged, and the lightened form is from 'badanah', which is abundance of flesh, and 'badantu' means I became fat and large.

ويقال: بدن الرجل تبدينا إذا أسن؛

And it is said: a man 'tabaddana' if he ages;

بادن متماسك ؛ والبادن: الضخم، فلما قال بادن أردفه بمتماسك وهو الذي يمسك بعض أعضائه بعضا، فهو معتدل الخلق؛

Stout and well-built; and 'al-badin': the large one, so when he said 'badin', he followed it with 'mutamasik', which is one whose limbs hold together, so he is of balanced build;

أتحب أن رجلا بادنا في يوم حار غسل ما تحت إزاره ثم أعطاكه فشربته؟

Would you like a corpulent man on a hot day to wash what is beneath his loincloth and then give it to you to drink?

وبدن الرجل، بالفتح، يبدن بدنا وبدانة، فهو بادن إذا ضخم، وكذلك بدن، بالضم، يبدن بدانة.

And a man's 'badana', with fatha, 'yabduna' with 'badan' and 'badanah', so he is 'badin' if he is large, and likewise 'baduna', with damma, 'yabduna' with 'badanah'.

ورجل بادن ومبدن وامرأة مبدنة: وهما السمينان.

And a 'badin' man and 'mubdan' and a 'mubdanah' woman: and they are the fat ones.

والمبدن: المسن.

And the 'mubdan': the aged one.

بدنت المرأة وبدنت بدنا؛ قال أبو منصور وغيره: بدنا وبدانة على فعالة، قال الجوهري: وامرأة بادن أيضا وبدين.

The woman became corpulent and aged, 'badanan'; Abu Mansur and others said: 'badan' and 'badanah' are on the pattern of 'fa'alah', and Al-Jauhari said: and a woman is also 'badin' and 'badiin'.

ورجل بدن: مسن كبير؛

And a 'badan' man: old and large;

هل لشباب فات من مطلب، ... أم ما بكاء البدن الأشيب؟

Is there any seeking for youth that has passed, ... or is it the weeping of the old, gray-haired man?

والبدن: الوعل المسن؛

And the 'badan': the old mountain goat;

قد قلت لما بدت العقاب، ... وضمها والبدن الحقاب:

I said when the hunting dog appeared, ... and embraced it, and the old mountain goat of Al-Haqab:

جدي لكل عامل ثواب، ... والرأس والأكرع والإهاب .

My kid is a reward for every worker, ... and the head, the shanks, and the skin.

كأن قتود الرحل منها تبينها ... قرون تحنت في جماجم أبدن

As if the saddle-girths from them reveal them ... horns dyed in the skulls of old mountain goats.

والبدنة من الإبل والبقر: كالأضحية من الغنم تهدى إلى مكة، الذكر والأنثى في ذلك سواء؛

And the 'badanah' from camels and cows: is like the sacrifice from sheep offered to Mecca, the male and female are equal in that;

البدنة ناقة أو بقرة تنحر بمكة، سميت بذلك لأنهم كانوا يسمنونها، والجمع بدن وبدن، ولا يقال في الجمع بدن، وإن كانوا قد قالوا خشب وأجم ورخم وأكم، استثناه اللحياني من هذه.

The 'badanah' is a she-camel or a cow slaughtered in Mecca, it is so named because they used to fatten it, and the plural is 'badan' and 'badan', and 'badan' is not said for the plural, even though they said 'khashab' and 'ajam' and 'rakham' and 'akam', Al-Lihyani excluded it from these.

قد ساق بدنة: يجوز أن تكون سميت بدنة لعظمها وضخامتها، ويقال: سميت بدنة لسنها.

He has driven a 'badanah': it is permissible that it was named 'badanah' for its size and bulk, and it is said: it was named 'badanah' for its age.

والبدن: السمن والاكتناز، وكذلك البدن مثل عسر وعسر؛

And 'al-badan': fatness and corpulence, and likewise 'al-badan' like 'usur' and 'usur';

كأنها، من بدن وإيفار، ... دبت عليها ذربات الأنبار

As if she, from fatness and abundance, ... the fatness of Al-Anbar crept upon her.

أنه أتي ببدنات خمس فطفقن يزدلفن إليه بأيتهن يبدأ ؛

That five 'badanat' were brought to him, and they began to approach him, starting with which one.

البدنة، بالهاء، تقع على الناقة والبقرة والبعير الذكر مما يجوز في الهدي والأضاحي، وهي بالبدن أشبه، ولا تقع على الشاة، سميت بدنة لعظمها وسمنها، وجمع البدنة البدن.

The 'badanah', with ta', applies to the she-camel, the cow, and the male camel that is permissible for sacrifice and offerings, and it is more like 'al-badan', and it does not apply to a sheep, it is named 'badanah' for its size and fatness, and the plural of 'badanah' is 'al-badan'.

والبدن جعلناها لكم من شعائر الله ؛

And the sacrificial animals, We have made them for you of the symbols of Allah;

بدنة وبدن، وإنما سميت بدنة لأنها تبدن أي تسمن.

'Badanah' and 'badan', and it is only called 'badanah' because it 'tabdunu' meaning it fattens.

قيل له إن أهل العراق يقولون إذا أعتق الرجل أمته ثم تزوجها كان كمن يركب بدنته ؛

It was said to him: the people of Iraq say that if a man frees his slave woman and then marries her, it is like riding his sacrificial animal;

أي من أعتق أمته فقد جعلها محررة لله، فهي بمنزلة البدنة التي تهدى إلى بيت الله في الحج فلا تركب إلا عن ضرورة، فإذا تزوج أمته المعتقة كان كمن قد ركب بدنته المهداة.

Meaning, whoever frees his slave woman has made her free for Allah, so she is like the sacrificial animal offered to the house of Allah in Hajj, and one does not ride her except out of necessity, so if he marries his freed slave woman, it is like having ridden his offered sacrificial animal.

والبدن: شبه درع إلا أنه قصير قدر ما يكون على الجسد فقط قصير الكمين.

And 'al-badan': like a coat of mail except it is short, just enough to cover the body, with short sleeves.

البدن الدرع القصيرة على قدر الجسد، وقيل: هي الدرع عامة، وبه فسر ثعلب قوله تعالى: فاليوم ننجيك ببدنك ؛ قال: بدرعك، وذلك أنهم شكوا في غرقه فأمر الله عز وجل البحر أن يقذفه على دكة في البحر ببدنه أي بدرعه، فاستيقنوا حينئذ أنه قد غرق؛

Al-badan: the short armor that fits the body, and it was said: it is armor in general, and with this, Tha'lab interpreted the Almighty's saying: 'So today We shall save you with your body (or armor)'; he said: with your armor, and that is because they doubted his drowning, so Allah the Almighty commanded the sea to cast him onto a sandbank in the sea with his body (or armor), so they became certain then that he had drowned;

قالوا بجسد لا روح فيه، قال الأخفش: وقول من قال بدرعك فليس بشيء، والجمع أبدان.

They said with a body without a soul, Al-Akhfash said: and the saying of whoever said 'with your armor' is nothing, and the plural is 'abdan'.

لما خطب فاطمة، رضوان الله عليها، قيل: ما عندك؟ قال: فرسي وبدني ؛ البدن: الدرع من الزرد، وقيل: هي القصيرة منها.

When he proposed to Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, it was said: What do you have? He said: My horse and my armor; 'al-badan': the mail armor, and it was said: it is the short one of them.

أبيض فضفاض الرداء والبدن أي واسع الدرع؛ يريد كثرة العطاء.

White, spacious in his cloak and his armor, meaning abundant in his giving.

فأخرج يده من تحت بدنه ؛ استعار البدن هاهنا للجبة الصغيرة تشبيها بالدرع، ويحتمل أن يريد من أسفل بدن الجبة، ويشهد له ما جاء في الرواية الأخرى: فأخرج يده من تحت البدن.

So he took his hand out from under his coat; 'al-badan' is used here metaphorically for a small garment, likening it to armor, and it is possible that he means from the lower part of the garment's body, and what came in the other narration supports this: 'So he took his hand out from under the garment'.

لها بدن عاس، ونار كريمة ... بمعترك الآري، بين الضرائم.

She has a noble lineage, and a generous fire ... in the arena of battle, among the lions.
