والأنن: طائر يضرب إلى السواد، له طوق كهيئة طوق الدبسي، أحمر الرجلين والمنقار، وقيل: هو الورشان، وقيل: هو مثل الحمام إلا أنه أسود، وصوته أنين: أوه أوه
And 'al-anan' is a bird that tends towards blackness, with a collar like the collar of the 'dabsī', red-legged and red-beaked; it is said to be the 'wurayshan', and it is said to be like a pigeon but black, and its sound is 'anīn': 'Ooh ooh'.
وإنه لمئنة أن يفعل ذلك أي خليق
And it is 'mi'na' for him to do that, meaning he is worthy.
وأتاه على مئنة ذلك أي حينه وربانه
And it came to him at the 'mi'na' of that, meaning its time and its master.
إن طول الصلاة وقصر الخطبة مئنة من فقه الرجل أي بيان منه
Indeed, the length of the prayer and the shortness of the sermon are a 'mi'na' of a man's understanding, meaning a sign of it.
إنه لمئنة أن يفعل ذلك، وأنتما وإنهن لمئنة أن تفعلوا ذلك بمعنى إنه لخليق أن يفعل ذلك
It is 'mi'na' for him to do that, and for you two, and for them, it is 'mi'na' for you to do that, meaning it is fitting for him to do that.

It is a 'mi'na' for him to do that, and a 'mazanna' for him to do that.
إن اكتحالا بالنقي الأملج، ... ونظرا في الحاجب المزجج مئنة من الفعال الأعوج
Indeed, applying kohl to the smooth white of the eye, and looking at the finely drawn eyebrow, is a 'mi'na' of crooked deeds.
وأن الماء يؤنه أنا إذا صبه
And water pours 'ana' when it is poured.
أن ماء ثم أغله أي صبه وأغله
That water, then pour it, meaning pour it and let it flow.
وإذا كانت مبتدأة ليس قبلها شيء يعتمد عليه، أو كانت مستأنفة بعد كلام قديم ومضى، أو جاءت بعدها لام مؤكدة يعتمد عليها كسرت الألف، وفيما سوى ذلك تنصب الألف

And their saying: 'Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary,' you break it because it follows speech as a quotation.
ما قلت لهم إلا ما أمرتني به أن اعبدوا الله
I said not to them except what You commanded me, [which is]: 'Worship Allah'.
قد قلت لك كلاما حسنا أن أباك شريف وأنك عاقل
I have told you good words: that your father is noble and that you are intelligent.
قول عبد الله مذ اليوم أن الناس خارجون
The statement of Abdullah from today is that the people are going out.
بلغني أن قد كان كذا وكذا
It reached me that so-and-so happened.
بلغني أنه كان أخو بكر غنيا
It reached me that Bakr's brother was rich.
وإن رب رجل
And the Lord of a man.
إنه رب رجل
Indeed, He is the Lord of a man.
إن لك وإن فيها وإن بك وأشباهها
Indeed, for you, and indeed in it, and indeed with you, and the like.
وأن كلا لما ليوفينهم
And that each of them will be fully repaid for their deeds.
فلو أنك في يوم الرخاء سألتني ... فراقك، لم أبخل، وأنت صديق
And if you had asked me for your separation on a day of ease... I would not have been stingy, and you are a friend.
بأنك ربيع وغيث مريع، ... وقدما هناك تكون الثمالا
That you are a spring and abundant rain, ... and long ago there were the destitute.
وإن الذين اختلفوا في الكتاب لفي شقاق بعيد
Indeed, those who differ about the Book are in extreme opposition.
إلا إنهم ليأكلون الطعام
Except that they eat food.
والله إنه لقائم
And by Allah, indeed he is standing.
والله أنك قائم
And by Allah, you are standing.
وأنشدوا: ووجه مشرق النحر، ... كأن ثدييه حقان
And they recited: And a face with a shining chest, ... as if its breasts were two water skins.
إن هذان لساحران
Indeed, these two are magicians.

بكرت علي عواذلي ... يلحينني وألومهنه
My censurers came to me early... blaming me, and I blame them.
ويقلن: شيب قد علاك، ... وقد كبرت، فقلت: إنه
And they say: Gray hair has come upon you, ... and you have grown old, so I said: Indeed it is so.
وإن اللام وقعت موقعها، وأن المعنى نعم هذان لهما ساحران
And the 'lam' has taken its place, and the meaning is: Yes, these two are magicians.
وإنه على ما تقول
And it is as you say.
وإنما يراد تأويله ليس أنه موضوع في اللغة لذلك
And its meaning is intended, not that it is established in the language for that purpose.
