والتحيين: أن تحلب كل يوم وليلة مرة واحدة.

And 'al-tahyīn' is to milk once every day and night.

ومن هذا قيل للأحمق مأفون، كأنه نزع عنه عقله كله.

And from this, the foolish person is called 'mafūn', as if his entire intellect has been removed from him.

وأفنت الناقة، بالكسر: قل لبنها، فهي أفنة مقصورة،

And the camel's milk has diminished (afanat), with kasra: its milk became scarce, so it is 'afina' (shortened).

وقيل: الأفن أن تحلب الناقة والشاة في غير وقت حلبها فيفسدها ذلك.

And it is said: 'al-afn' is to milk a camel or ewe at a time other than its milking time, and that spoils it.

والأفن: النقص.

And 'al-afn' means deficiency.

والمتأفن المتنقص.

And 'al-muta'affinu' is the one who diminishes or causes deficiency.

إياك ومشاورة النساء فإن رأيهن إلى أفن ؛ الأفن: النقص.

And 'al-afan', with haraka: is weakness of opinion, and a man has become foolish (afina), with kasra, and 'afana', so he is 'mafūn' and 'afin'.

ورجل مأفون: ضعيف العقل والرأي، وقيل: هو المتمدح بما ليس عنده، والأول أصح، وقد أفن أفنا وأفنا.

And a 'mafūn' man: is weak in mind and opinion, and it is said: he is one who boasts of what he does not have, and the first is more correct, and he has become foolish (afina) with 'afan' and 'afanan'.

والأفين: كالمأفون؛ ومنه قولهم في أمثال العرب: كثرة الرقين تعفي على أفن الأفين أي تغطي حمق الأحمق.

And 'al-afin' is like 'al-mafūn'; and from this is their saying in Arab proverbs: The abundance of 'al-riqayn' covers the foolishness of the 'afin' (fool), meaning it conceals the fool's stupidity.

وأفنه الله يأفنه أفنا، فهو مأفون.

And God made him foolish (afanahu) He makes him foolish (yafnuhu) with 'afanan', so he is 'mafūn'.

ويقال: ما في فلان آفنة أي خصلة تأفن عقله؛

And it is said: There is no 'āfina' in so-and-so, meaning a trait that impairs his intellect.

ما حولتك عن اسم الصدق آفنة ... من العيوب، ما يبرى بالسيب «1» .

No flaw ('āfina') from defects has turned you away from the name of truth, which is not healed by giving.

أفن الطعام يؤفن أفنا، وهو مأفون، للذي يعجبك ولا خير فيه.

Food spoils (yafina) it spoils (yufanu) with 'afanan', and it is 'mafūn', that which pleases you but has no good in it.

والجوز المأفون: الحشف.

And 'al-jawz al-mafūn': are the bad dates (ḥashaf).

البطنة تأفن الفطنة؛ يريد أن الشبع والامتلاء يضعف الفطنة أي الشبعان لا يكون فطنا عاقلا.

Gluttony spoils (ta'fina) perceptiveness; meaning that satiety and fullness weaken perceptiveness, i.e., a full person is not perceptive or intelligent.

وأخذ الشيء بإفانه أي بزمانه وأوله، وقد يكون فعلانا.

And taking something at its 'ifānah' means at its time and beginning, and it may be 'fi'lānan'.

وجاءه على إفان ذلك أي إبانه وعلى حينه.

And he came to him at the 'ifān' of that, meaning its proper time and its appointed hour.

إفان فعلان، والنون زائدة، بدليل قولهم أتيته على إفان ذلك وأفف ذلك.

'Ifān' is 'fi'lān', and the 'n' is extra, as evidenced by their saying: I came to him at the 'ifān' of that and 'afaf' of that.

والأفين الفصيل، ذكرا كان أو أنثى.

And 'al-afin' is the young camel, whether male or female.

كأن الأفانى سبيب لها، ... إذا التف تحت عناصي الوبر

As if the 'afānī' were a braid for them, ... when the wool gathers beneath its roots.

وهي طيبة تكثر ولها كلأ يابس، وقيل: الأفانى شيء ينبت كأنه حمضة يشبه بفراخ القطا حين يشوك تبدأ بقلة ثم تصير شجرة خضراء غبراء؛

And it is pleasant, abundant, and has dry fodder. And it is said: 'al-afānī' is something that grows like a sour plant, resembling young partridges when it sprouts, starting as a small herb then becoming a green, dusty tree.

توالب ترفع الأذناب عنها، ... شرى أستاههن من الأفانى

They follow each other, raising their tails from their hindquarters, which are irritated by the 'afānī'.

وأنها إذا يبست وابيضت شوكت، وشوكها الحماط، وهو لا يقع في شراب إلا ريح من شربه؛

And when it dries and whitens, it becomes thorny, and its thorns are like 'al-ḥimāṭ', and if it falls into a drink, there is only a smell from drinking it.

هي من الجنبة شجرة صغيرة، مجتمع ورقها كالكبة، غبيراء مليس ورقها، وعيدانها شبه الزغب، لها شويك لا تكاد تستبينه، فإذا وقع على جلد الإنسان وجده كأنه حريق نار، وربما شري منه الجلد وسال منه الدم.

It is a small tree from the 'jinnaba' family, its leaves gathered like a ball, its leaves are dusty and smooth, its twigs are like down, it has small thorns that are barely visible, and if it falls on human skin, one finds it like a burning fire, and sometimes the skin becomes irritated and bleeds.

والأفانى نبت أصفر وأحمر، واحدته أفانية.

And 'al-afānī' is a yellow and red plant, its singular is 'afāniyah'.

والأفانى نبت ما دام رطبا، فإذا يبس فهو الحماط، واحدتها أفانية مثل يمانية، ويقال: هو عنب الثعلب،
