The atanah: the foolish woman, by analogy with the female donkey. And it was said to the jurist of the Arabs: Is it permissible for a man to marry an atanah? He said: Yes; al-Fārisī narrated it in al-Tadhkirah.

A swift one, like the rock of al-Thamil, ... passing the night journey after exhaustion, making it difficult.

Atan al-Thamil is the huge rock in the bottom of the stream that nothing can lift or move, nor can it be taken into; its length is a stature and its width is similar.

Al-Farra' said: it is al-atātīn; Ibn Jinni said: it is as if he added another 'ayn to the 'ayn of 'atūn', so fa'ūl with a light 'ayn became fa'ūl with a doubled 'ayn, and then he formed it as 'atūn' and said for it 'atānīn' like 'safūd' and 'safāfīd', and 'klūb' and 'kalālīb'; Al-Farra' said: and this is like how they pluralized 'qass' to 'qasāwisah', they wanted to pluralize it on the model of 'mahālibah', so the 'sins' became numerous and they replaced one of them with a 'wāw', he said: and sometimes they double the plural without doubling its singular, like 'atūn' and 'atātīn'.
