And Mujahid said regarding His saying: 'They do not expect the 'Days of God'', he said: 'His blessings'.

فاليوم هاهنا بمعنى الدهر أي هو دهره كذلك

So 'yawm' here means 'eternity', meaning it is his eternity likewise.

والأيام في أصل البناء أيوام، ولكن العرب إذا وجدوا في كلمة ياء وواوا في موضع والأولى منهما ساكنة، أدغموا إحداهما في الأخرى

And 'al-ayyam' in the original construction is 'aywam', but the Arabs, if they found in a word a 'ya' and a 'waw' in a position, and the first of them is silent, they assimilated one into the other.

من ذلك أيام أصلها أيوام، ومثلها سيد وميت، الأصل سيود وميوت

Among these is 'ayyam', its origin is 'aywam', and similar to it are 'sayyid' and 'mayyit', the origin being 'saywud' and 'maywut'.

فقال: يريدون اليوم اليوم، ثم خففوا الواو فقالوا اليوم اليوم

So he said: 'They mean 'al-yawm al-yawm', then they lightened the 'waw' and said 'al-yawm al-yawm'.

وقالوا: أنا اليوم أفعل كذا، لا يريدون يوما بعينه ولكنهم يريدون الوقت الحاضر

And they say: 'I do today such and such', they do not mean a specific day but rather the present time.

ومن قوله عز وجل: اليوم أكملت لكم دينكم

And from His saying, Exalted is He: 'Today I have perfected for you your religion'.

وقالوا: اليوم يومك، يريدون التشنيع وتعظيم الأمر

And they say: 'Today is your day', meaning to emphasize and magnify the matter.

وفي حديث عمر، رضي الله عنه: السائبة والصدقة ليومهما أي ليوم القيامة، يعني يراد بهما ثواب ذلك اليوم

And in the narration of 'Umar, may God be pleased with him: 'The Sa'ibah and the charity are for their day, meaning the Day of Resurrection, meaning the reward of that day is intended by them.

قال للحجاج سر إلى العراق غرار النوم طويل اليوم ؛ يقال ذلك لمن جد في عمله يومه

He said to Al-Hajjaj: 'Go to Iraq, the length of sleep is a long day'; this is said to one who is diligent in his work for his day.

وتلك أيام الهرج أي وقته، ولا يختص بالنهار دون الليل

And those are the days of chaos, meaning its time, and it is not specific to the day without the night.

والأخيره نادرة لأن القياس لا يوجب قلب الياء واوا، كله: طويل شديد هائل

And the last one is rare because analogy does not necessitate turning the 'ya' into a 'waw', all of it: long, severe, terrifying.

ويوم ذو أياويم كذلك؛ وقوله: مروان يا مروان لليوم اليمي

And 'yawm dhu ayawim' is likewise; and his saying: 'Marwan, O Marwan, for the difficult day'.

فقال: أراد أخو اليوم اليوم كما يقال عند الشدة والأمر العظيم اليوم اليوم، فقلب فصار اليمو ثم نقله من فعل إلى فعل

So he said: 'He meant the brother of 'al-yawm al-yawm' as is said during hardship and great matters 'al-yawm al-yawm', so it was inverted and became 'al-yimu', then he transferred it from one pattern to another.

فصار اليمي كأحق وأدل، وقال غيره: هو فعل أي الشديد

So it became 'al-yami' like 'ahaqq' and 'adall', and others said: 'It is 'fa'al', meaning the severe one.

يقال يوم أيوم، كما يقال ليلة ليلاء

It is said 'yawm aywum', just as 'laylah layla'' is said.

نعم أخو الهيجاء في اليوم اليمي، ... ليوم روع أو فعال مكرم

What a good brother in battle on the difficult day, ... for a day of terror or a noble deed.

هو مقلوب منه، أخر الواو وقدم الميم، ثم قلبت الواو ياء حيث صارت طرفا كما قالوا أدل في جمع دلو

It is an inversion of it, the 'waw' was delayed and the 'mim' was advanced, then the 'waw' was turned into a 'ya' where it became at the end, as they said 'adall' for the plural of 'dalw'.

ويقال: نعم الأخ فلان في اليوم إذا نزل بنا أي في الكائنة من الكون إذا حدثت

And it is said: 'So-and-so is a good brother in the event when it befalls us', meaning in the occurrence of existence when it happens.

وتقول العرب لليوم الشديد: يوم ذو أيام ويوم ذو أياييم، لطول شره على أهله

And the Arabs say for a severe day: 'yawm dhu ayyam' and 'yawm dhu ayayim', due to the length of its evil upon its people.

أسس على التقوى من أول يوم ، أي من أول الأيام، كما تقول لقيت كل رجل تريد كل الرجال
