Abu Ubaid said: I heard Abu Zayd say: The food prepared at the wedding is called al-waleemah, and that at the betrothal is called al-naqee'ah;

وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ، صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ وَقَدْ جَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ أَهْلَهُ: أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ أَيْ اصْنَعْ وَلِيمَةً،

And the Prophet, peace be upon him, said to Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf when he gathered his family to him: Hold a feast, even if it be with a sheep, meaning, prepare a feast.

وَأَصْلُ هَذَا كُلِّهِ مِنَ الِاجْتِمَاعِ، وَتُكَرِّرُ ذِكْرُهَا فِي الْحَدِيثِ.

And the origin of all of this is from gathering, and it is repeatedly mentioned in the hadith.

وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ: مَا أَوْلَمَ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ نِسَائِهِ مَا أَوْلَمَ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا.

And in the hadith: He did not hold a feast for any of his wives as he did for Zaynab, may Allah be pleased with her.

Abu al-Abbas: Al-walmah is the completeness of a thing and its assembly.

وَأَوْلَمَ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا اجْتَمَعَ خَلْقُهُ وَعَقْلُهُ.

And a man has 'awlama' when his character and intellect have come together.

أَبُو زَيْدٍ: رَجُلٌ وَيْلَمَهُ دَاهِيَةٌ أَيْ دَاهِيَةٌ.

وَقَالَ ابْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ:؛ إِنَّهُ لَوَيْلِمَةٌ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ مِثْلُهُ، وَالْأَصْلُ فِيهِ وَيْلٌ لِأُمِّهِ، ثُمَّ أُضِيفَ وَيْلٌ إِلَى الْأُمِّ.

And Ibn al-A'rabi said: Indeed, he is a 'waylimah' of a man like him, and the origin of it is 'woe to his mother', then 'woe' was added to 'mother'.
