Tha'lab recited: I remembered Fatima's smile, ... on the morning she revealed a bright, tattooed (tooth/gum), sweet for her, upon which the 'barsham' runs.

والبرشم: البرقع.

And 'al-barsham' is the veil.

ووشم اليد وشما: غرزها بإبرة ثم ذر عليها النؤور، وهو النيلج.

And tattooing the hand, 'washman': to prick it with a needle then sprinkle 'na'ur' on it, which is indigo.

والأشم أيضا: الوشم.

And 'al-ashm' is also: tattooing.

واستوشمه: سأله أن يشمه.

And he asked him to tattoo him: he asked him to perform the tattoo.

واستوشمت المرأة: أرادت الوشم أو طلبته.

And the woman sought tattooing: she desired or requested tattooing.

لعنت الواشمة والمستوشمة ، وبعضهم يرويه: الموتشمة ؛

Cursed be the tattooer and the one who seeks tattooing, and some narrate it: 'al-mutashammah';

قال أبو عبيد: الوشم في اليد وذلك أن المرأة كانت تغرز ظهر كفها ومعصمها بإبرة أو بمسلة حتى تؤثر فيه، ثم تحشوه بالكحل أو النيل أو بالنؤور، والنؤور دخان الشحم، فيزرق أثره أو يخضر.

Abu Ubaid said: Tattooing is on the hand, and that is when a woman would prick the back of her hand and wrist with a needle or awl until it left a mark, then stuff it with kohl, indigo, or 'na'ur', and 'na'ur' is the smoke of fat, so its trace becomes blue or green.

وأشرف من كنيف، وأسماء بنت عميس موشومة اليد ممسكته أي منقوشة اليد بالحناء.

And he looked out from a latrine, and Asma bint Umays, her hand tattooed, holding him, meaning her hand was inscribed with henna.

يقال فلان أعظم في نفسه من المتشمة، وهذا مثل، والمتشمة: امرأة وشمت استها ليكون أحسن لها.

It is said, 'So-and-so is greater in himself than the Mutashammah', and this is a proverb, and the Mutashammah: a woman who tattooed her private parts to make them more beautiful.

في أمثالهم لهو أخيل في نفسه من الواشمة.

In their proverbs, 'He is more boastful in himself than the tattooer'.

ووشوم الظبية والمهاة: خطوط في الذراعين؛

And the 'wushum' of the gazelle and the wild cow: lines on the forelegs;

وقال النابغة: أو ذو وشوم بحوضى

And Al-Nabighah said: Or one with markings on his forelegs at my watering place.

أن داود، عليه السلام، وشم خطيئته في كفه فما رفع إلى فيه طعاما ولا شرابا حتى بشره بدموعه ؛ معناه نقشها في كفه نقش الوشم.

David, peace be upon him, tattooed his sin on his palm, and he did not raise food or drink to his mouth until his tears brought him good news; meaning he engraved it on his palm like a tattoo.

والوشم: الشيء تراه من النبات في أول ما ينبت.

And 'al-wushm': the thing you see of plants when they first sprout.

وأوشمت الأرض إذا رأيت فيها شيئا من النبات.

And the land 'awshamat' if you see something of vegetation in it.

وأوشمت السماء: بدا منها برق؛ قال:

And the sky 'awshamat': lightning appeared from it; he said:

حتى إذا ما أوشم الرواعد

Until when the thunderclouds showed the first signs of lightning.

ومنه قيل: أوشم النبت إذا أبصرت أوله.

And from this it is said: The plant 'awshama' when you see its beginning.

وأوشم البرق: لمع لمعا خفيفا؛ قال أبو زيد: هو أول البرق حين يبرق؛ قال الشاعر:

And the lightning 'awshama': it flashed with a light flash; Abu Zayd said: It is the first lightning when it flashes; the poet said:

يا من يرى لبارق قد أوشما

O you who sees a lightning flash that has appeared faintly.

وأوشمت الأرض إذا ظهر شيء من نباتها؛

And the land 'awshamat' if some of its vegetation appears;

وأوشم فلان في ذلك الأمر إيشاما إذا نظر فيه؛ قال أبو محمد الفقعسي:

And so-and-so examined that matter, 'ishaman', if he looked into it; Abu Muhammad Al-Fuq'asi said:

إن لها ريا إذا ما أوشما

It has a fragrance when it appears faintly.

وأوشم يفعل ذلك أي أخذ؛ قال الراجز:

And 'awshama' does that, meaning takes; the rajaz poet said:

أوشم يذري وابلا رويا

He takes, scattering abundant rain.

وأوشمت المرأة: بدأ ثديها ينتأ كما يوشم البرق.

And the woman 'awshamat': her breast began to protrude as lightning flashes faintly.

وأوشم فيه الشيب: كثر وانتشر؛ عن ابن الأعرابي.

And gray hair 'awshama' in him: it became abundant and spread; from Ibn Al-A'rabi.

وأوشم الكرم: ابتدأ يلون؛ عن أبي حنيفة.

And the vine 'awshama': it began to change color; from Abu Hanifa.

وقال مرة: أوشم تم نضجه.

And Murrah said: 'Awshama' means its ripening is complete.

وأوشمت الأعناب إذا لانت وطابت؛

And the grapes 'awshamat' if they soften and become good;

وقوله: أقول وفي الأكفان أبيض ماجد ... كغصن الأراك وجهه، حين وشما

And his saying: I say, and in the shrouds a noble white one... his face like an Arak branch, when it appeared.

يروى: وشم ووسم، فوشم بدا ورقه، ووسم حسن.

It is narrated: 'washama' and 'wasama', so 'washama' means its leaves appeared, and 'wasama' means beautiful.

وما أصابتنا العام وشمة أي قطرة مطر.

And we were not struck this year by a 'washmah', meaning a drop of rain.

ويقال: بيننا وشيمة أي كلام شر أو عداوة.

And it is said: Between us is a 'weshimah', meaning words of evil or enmity.

وما عصاه وشمة أي طرفة عين.

And he did not disobey him for the blink of an eye.

وما عصيته وشمة أي كلمة.

And I did not disobey him by a word.

والله ما كتمت وشمة أي كلمة حكاها.

By God, I did not conceal a 'washmah', meaning a word he narrated.

والوشم: موضع؛ أنشد ابن الأعرابي:

And Al-Wasm: a place; Ibn Al-A'rabi recited:

رددتهم بالوشم تدمى لثاتهم ... على شعب الأكوار، ميل العمائم

I turned them back at Al-Wasm, their gums bleeding... on the passes of the saddles, their turbans askew.

عفت قرقرى والوشم، حتى تنكرت ... أواريها، والخيل ميل الدعائم

Qarqara and Al-Wasm have become desolate, until their tents became unrecognizable, and the horses leaned like pillars.

الوشم في اللثة، اللثة بالكسر والتخفيف، عمور الأسنان وهو مغارزها، والمعروف الآن في الوشم أنه على الجلد والشفاه، والله أعلم.

Tattooing is in the gums, 'al-lithah' with kasra and shortening, the sockets of the teeth, and what is known now of tattooing is that it is on the skin and lips, and God knows best.
