وقالوا: هم لنفسك ولا تهم لهؤلاء أي اطلب لها واهتم واحتل.

And they said: Attend to yourself and do not attend to these, meaning seek for yourself, be concerned, and strategize.

وفلان لا يهتام لنفسه أي لا يحتال؛

And so-and-so does not attend to himself, meaning he does not strategize;

فاهتم لنفسك، يا جميع، ولا تكن ... لبني قريبة والبطون تهيم «2» .

So attend to yourself, O all of you, and do not be... for Banu Qareebah and the bellies that wander.

والهيام، بالضم: أشد العطش؛ أنشد ابن بري: يهيم، وليس الله شاف هيامه، ... بغراء، ما غنى الحمام وأنجدا

And al-huyam, with damma: extreme thirst; Ibn Birri recited: He wanders, and God is not the one who cures his thirst... with a beautiful one, when the dove cooed and went north.

ورجل مهيوم وأهيم: شديد العطش، والأنثى هيماء.

He said: And among the Arabs, some say 'ha'im' and the female 'haymaa', then they pluralize it to 'haym', as they said 'a'it' and 'ayt', and 'ha'il' and 'hawl', and it means 'ha'il' except that the damma was left in 'haym' so that the yaa would not become a waw.

فعادت كثيبا أهيم ؛ قال: هكذا جاء في رواية، والمعروف أهيل ، وقد تقدم.

So it turned into a loose sand dune; he said: This is how it came in the narration, but the known word is 'ahil', and it has been mentioned before.

أبو الجراح: الهيام داء يصيب الإبل من ماء تشربه.

Abu al-Jarah said: Al-huyam is a disease that affects camels from water they drink.

وفي حديث ابن عمر: أن رجلا باع منه إبلا هيما أي مراضا، جمع أهيم، وهو الذي أصابه الهيام، وهو داء يكسبها العطش؛

And in the narration of Ibn Umar: that a man sold him sick camels, meaning diseased, the plural of 'ahaym', which is one afflicted with al-huyam, which is a disease that causes them thirst;

وقيل: هي المراض التي تمص الماء مصا ولا تروى.

And it is said: they are the sick ones that suck water without being quenched.

وقيل: إنها لا تروى إذا كانت كذلك.

And it is said: they are not quenched when they are in that state.

ومفازة هيماء: لا ماء بها، وفي الصحاح: الهيماء المفازة لا ماء بها.

And a barren desert: there is no water in it, and in Al-Sihah: Al-haymaa is the desert with no water in it.

والهيام، بالفتح، من الرمل: ما كان ترابا دقاقا يابسا، وقيل: هو التراب أو الرمل الذي لا يتمالك أن يسيل من اليد للينه، والجمع هيم مثل قذال وقذل؛

And al-huyam, with fatha, from sand: what is fine, dry dust, and it is said: it is the dust or sand that cannot be held in the hand as it slips due to its looseness, and the plural is haym like qadhāl and qadhil;

يجتاب أصلا قالصا متنبذا، ... بعجوب أنقاء يميل هيامها

He traverses a barren, isolated place... through the back of a sandy expanse whose sand shifts.

والتهيم: مشية حسنة؛ قال أبو عمرو: التهيم أحسن المشي؛

And al-tahyeem: a good gait; Abu Amr said: Al-tahyeem is the best gait;

أحسن من يمشي كذا تهيما

Better than one who walks like this, wandering.

وهييماء: موضع، وهو ماء لبني مجاشع، يمد ويقصر؛ قال الشاعر مجمع بن هلال: وعاثرة، يوم الهييما، رأيتها ... وقد ضمها من داخل الحب مجزع
