And it is said: 'Munadamah' is an inversion of 'Mudamanah', because he habitually drinks with his companion, because inversion in their speech is common, like bows from a bow, and 'jadhab' and 'jabhadh', and 'ma atyabahu' and 'ma aytabahu', and 'khanaza' the meat and 'khanaza', and 'wahid' and 'wahhad'.
ونادم الرجل منادمة ونداما: جالسه على الشراب.
And 'nadama' a man, 'munadamah' and 'nudama': he sat with him for drinking.
والنديم: المنادم، والجمع ندماء، وكذلك الندمان، والجمع ندامى وندام
And 'al-nadim': the one who keeps company, and the plural is 'nudamaa', and likewise 'al-nadman', and the plural is 'nudama' and 'nudam'.
وفي حديث عمر، رضي الله عنه: إياكم ورضاع السوء فإنه لا بد من أن ينتدم يوما ما أي يظهر أثره.
And in the narration of Umar, may God be pleased with him: Beware of bad nursing, for it is inevitable that its trace will appear one day, meaning its effect.
والندم: الأثر، وهو مثل الندب، والباء والميم يتبادلان، وذكره الزمخشري بسكون الدال من الندم، وهو الغم اللازم إذ يندم صاحبه لما يعثر عليه من سوء آثاره.
And 'al-nadam': the trace, and it is like 'al-nadb', and 'ba' and 'mim' are interchangeable, and Al-Zamakhshari mentioned it with a sukun on the 'dal' from 'al-nadam', which is the persistent grief when its owner regrets what he discovers of his bad traces.
ويقال: خذ ما انتدم وانتدب وأوهف أي خذ ما تيسر.
And it is said: Take what is available and what is easy and what is accessible, meaning take what is easy.
والتندم: أن يتبع الإنسان أمرا ندما.
And 'al-tandam': that a person follows a matter with regret.
يقال: التقدم قبل التندم؛ وهذا يروى عن أكثم بن صيفي أنه قال: إن أردت المحاجزة فقبل المناجزة؛ قال أبو عبيد: معناه انج بنفسك قبل لقاء من لا قوام لك به
It is said: Advance before regretting; and this is narrated from Aktham ibn Sayfi that he said: If you want to avoid conflict, do so before confrontation; Abu Ubaid said: It means save yourself before meeting one with whom you have no standing.
وأندمه الله فندم.
And God made him regret, so he regretted.
ويقال: اليمين حنث أو مندمة؛ قال لبيد: وإلا فما بالموت ضر لأهله، ... ولم يبق هذا الأمر في العيش مندما
And it is said: An oath is perjury or a cause for regret; Labid said: Otherwise, death is not harmful to its people... and this matter did not remain in life as a cause for regret.
