And the 'najm' from plants: everything that grows on the surface of the earth and emerges without a stalk and spreads flat without rising, and 'shajar' is everything that has a stalk.

قد قيل إن النجم يراد به النجوم، قال: وجائز أن يكون النجم هاهنا ما نبت على وجه الأرض وما طلع من نجوم السماء.

It has been said that 'al-najm' is intended to mean the stars; he said: And it is permissible for 'al-najm' here to mean what grows on the surface of the earth and what rises from the stars of the sky.

والنجوم: ما نجم من العروق أيام الربيع، ترى رؤوسها أمثال المسال تشق الأرض شقا.

And 'al-nujum': what emerges from the roots during the spring days; their heads are seen like openings splitting the earth.

النجمة شجرة، والنجمة الكلمة، والنجمة نبتة صغيرة، وجمعها نجم، فما كان له ساق فهو شجر، وما لم يكن له ساق فهو نجم.

A 'najmah' is a tree, and a 'najmah' is a word, and a 'najmah' is a small plant, and its plural is 'najm'; so what has a stalk is 'shajar', and what does not have a stalk is 'najm'.

السراديح أماكن لينة تنبت النجمة والنصي، قال: والنجمة شجرة تنبت ممتدة على وجه الأرض.

Al-Saradih are soft places where the 'najmah' and 'al-nasi' grow; he said: And the 'najmah' is a tree that grows spreading on the surface of the earth.

ضرب من النبت؛ وأنشد للحرث بن ظالم المري يهجو النعمان: أخصيي حمار ظل يكدم نجمة، ... أتؤكل جاراتي وجارك سالم؟

And this matter has no 'najm', meaning no origin.

They have in the far reaches of the earth a course and a path.

فصبحت، والشمس لما تنعم ... أن تبلغ الجدة فوق المنجم

So I reached the morning, and the sun had not yet softened... to reach the morning's red path above the horizon.

وفلان منجم الباطل والضلالة أي معدنه.

And so-and-so is a 'munajjim' of falsehood and misguidance, meaning its source.

والمنجمان والمنجمان: عظمان شاخصان في بواطن الكعبين يقبل أحدهما على الآخر إذا صفت القدمان.

And the 'munajjiman' and 'munajjiman': two prominent bones in the inner parts of the ankles, facing each other when the feet are aligned.

والمنجم، بكسر الميم، من الميزان: الحديدة المعترضة التي فيها اللسان.

وأنجم المطر: أقلع.

And the rain 'anjama': it ceased.

وضربه فما أنجم عنه حتى قتله أي ما أقلع.

And he struck him, and he did not 'anjama' from him until he killed him, meaning he did not cease.

And 'Al-Nijam': a place; Ma'qil bin Khuwailid said: 'A thirsty one, from the people of Laft... a clan between an 'athlah' and 'Al-Nijam'.
