ضربك الخد وصفحة الجسد ببسط اليد
Striking the cheek and the side of the body with the palm of the hand.
بالكف مفتوحة
With an open palm.
لطمه يلطمه لطما
He struck him, striking him, a striking.
ولا طمه ملاطمة ولطاما
And he struck him repeatedly, a striking and a striking.
الملطمان: الخدان
The two malṭamān: the two cheeks.
نابي المعدين أسيل ملطمه
My two camels are slender, their cheeks smooth.
وهما الملطمان نادر
And the two malṭamān are rare.
الملاطم الخدود، واحدها ملطم
Al-malāṭim are the cheeks, and one of them is a malṭam.
خصمون نفاعون بيض الملاطم
Opponents who are beneficial, with white cheeks.
اللطم إيضاح الحمرة
Al-laṭm is the clarification of redness.
اللطم: الضرب على الوجه بباطن الراحة
Al-laṭm: striking the face with the inner part of the palm.
لو ذات سوار لطمتني
If a woman with a bracelet had slapped me.
اللطيم، بلا فعل، من الخيل الذي يأخذ خديه بياض
Al-laṭīm, without a verb, is from the horses that have whiteness on their cheeks.
إذا رجعت غرة الفرس من أحد شقي وجهه إلى أحد الخدين فهو لطيم
If the blaze of a horse returns from one side of its face to one of the cheeks, it is laṭīm.
إذا سالت غرته في أحد شقي وجهه
If its blaze flowed down one side of its face.
لطم الفرس، على ما لم يسم فاعله، فهو لطيم
The horse was struck, and it is laṭīm.
اللطيم من الخيل: الأبيض موضع اللطمة من الخد
Al-laṭīm from horses: the white place of the slap on the cheek.
والجمع لطم
And the plural is laṭm.
خد ملطم: شدد للكثرة
A cheek that is malṭam: strengthened for abundance.
اللطيم من خيل الحلبة: هو التاسع من سوابق الخيل
Al-laṭīm from the racehorses: it is the ninth of the leading horses.
وذلك أنه يلطم وجهه فلا يدخل السرادق
This is because it strikes its face and does not enter the tent.
اللطيم: الصغير من الإبل الذي يفصل عند طلوع سهيل
Al-laṭīm: the young camel that is weaned at the rising of Suhail.
وذلك أن صاحبه يأخذ بأذنه ثم يلطمه عند طلوع سهيل
This is because its owner takes it by the ear and then strikes it at the rising of Suhail.
إذا طلع سهيل، برد الليل، وامتنع القيل، وللفصيل الويل
When Suhail rises, the night cools, the midday nap is foregone, and woe to the weaned calf.
أخذ الراعي وقال له: أترى سهيلا؟ والله لا تذوق عندي قطرة
The shepherd took it and said to it: Do you see Suhail? By God, you will not taste a drop from me.
ثم لطمه ونحاه
Then he struck it and moved it aside.
الفصيل إذا قوي على الركوب لطم خده عند عين الشمس
The calf, when it is strong enough to be ridden, strikes its cheek near the sun.
ثم يقال اغرب، فيصير ذلك الفصيل مؤدبا ويسمى لطيما
Then it is told to go away, and that calf becomes disciplined and is called laṭīm.
اللطيم: الذي يموت أبواه
Al-laṭīm: one whose parents have died.
والعجي: الذي تموت أمه
And al-ʿajjī: one whose mother has died.
واليتيم: الذي يموت أبوه
And al-yatīm: one whose father has died.
اللطيم واللطيمة: المسك
Al-laṭīm and al-laṭīmah: musk.
هي كل ضرب من الطيب يحمل على الصدغ من الملطم الذي هو الخد
It is every kind of perfume carried on the temple from the malṭam, which is the cheek.
ما قالها إلا بطالع سعد
He did not say it except with a fortunate star.
اللطيمة: وعاء المسك
Al-laṭīmah: a container of musk.
هي العير تحمله
It is the camel carrying it.
كل سوق يجلب إليها غير ما يؤكل من حر الطيب والمتاع غير الميرة لطيمة
Every market to which is brought something other than food, such as fine perfumes and goods, not provisions, is a laṭīmah.
إذا اصطكت بضيق حجرتاها، تلاقي العسجدية واللطيم
When their two wombs rub together in narrowness, they meet the ʿasjadīyah and the laṭīm.
العسجدية إبل منسوبة إلى سوق يكون فيها العسجد وهو الذهب
Al-ʿasjadīyah are camels attributed to a market where ʿasjad, which is gold, is found.
واللطيم: منسوب إلى سوق يكون أكثر بزها اللطيم، وهو جمع اللطيمة، وهي العير التي تحمل المسك
And al-laṭīm: is attributed to a market where most of its trade is laṭīm, which is the plural of laṭīmah, which is the camel carrying musk.
اللطيمة عير فيها طيب
Al-laṭīmah is a camel carrying perfume.
والعسجدية ركاب الملوك التي تحمل الدق
And al-ʿasjadīyah are the mounts of kings carrying fine goods.
اللطيمة العير تحمل الطيب وبز التجار
Al-laṭīmah is the camel carrying perfume and the merchants' textiles.
وربما قيل لسوق العطارين لطيمة
And sometimes the perfumers' market is called a laṭīmah.
كأنها بيت عطار يضمنه لطائم المسك، يحويها وتنتهب
As if it were an apothecary's shop containing containers of musk, which it holds and is plundered.
اللطيمة قطعة مسك
Al-laṭīmah is a piece of musk.
ويقال فارة مسك
And it is said to be a musk pod.
فقلت: أعطارا نرى في رحالنا؟ وما إن بموماة تباع اللطائم
So I said: Do we see perfumes in our tents? And yet in the desert, laṭā'im are sold.
عرفت كإتب عرفته اللطائم
I recognized it like a scent that the laṭā'im are known by.
يا قوم اللطيمة اللطيمة أي أدركوها
O people, the laṭīmah, the laṭīmah, meaning, catch it.
وهي منصوبة بإضمار هذا الفعل
And it is in the accusative case with the omission of this verb.
اللطيمة: الجمال التي تحمل العطر والبز غير الميرة
Al-laṭīmah: the camels carrying perfume and textiles other than provisions.
ولطائم المسك: أوعيته
And laṭā'im al-misk: its containers.
اللطيمة سوق الإبل
Al-laṭīmah is a camel market.
واللطيمة والزوملة من العير التي عليها أحمالها
And al-laṭīmah and al-zawmalah are from the camel that has its loads.
فجاء بها ما شئت من لطمية، تدور البحار فوقها وتموج
And he brought it, as much as you wish, from a laṭmīyah, the seas turning and surging above it.
إنما عنى درة
He only meant a pearl.
وتلطم وجهه: اربد
And his face became dark/reddish.
الملطم: اللئيم
Al-malṭam: the ignoble one.
لا يلطم المصبور وسط بيوتنا، ونحج أهل الحق بالتحكيم
The oppressed is not wronged in our midst, and the people of truth succeed through arbitration.
يقول: لا يظلم فينا فيلطم ولكن نأخذ الحق منه بالعدل عليه
He says: He is not wronged among us to be struck, but rather we take his right from him justly.
اللطيمة سوق فيها أوعية من العطر ونحوه من البياعات
Al-laṭīmah is a market with containers of perfume and similar goods.
يطوف بها وسط اللطيمة بائع
A seller circulates with it in the midst of the laṭīmah.
لطائم المسك يحويها وتنتهب
Containers of musk, it holds them and they are plundered.
يعني أوعية المسك
He means containers of musk.
اللطيمة العنبرة التي لطمت بالمسك فتفتقت به حتى نشبت رائحتها
Al-laṭīmah is an ambergris that was infused with musk until its scent became strong.
وهي اللطمية، ويقال: بالة لطمية
And it is al-laṭmīyah, and it is said: a laṭmīyah ball.
كأن عليها بالة لطمية، لها من خلال الدأيتين أريج
As if it had upon it a laṭmīyah ball, with a fragrance from between the two sides.
أراد بالبالة الرائحة والشمة، مأخوذ من بلوته أي شممته
He intended by 'ball' the scent and the sniff, taken from 'balawtuhu' meaning 'I sniffed it'.
أعطني لطيمة من مسك أي قطعة
Give me a laṭīmah of musk, meaning a piece.
هي الغوالي المعنبرة، ولا تسمى لطيمة حتى تكون مخلوطة بغيرها
It is the precious perfumes mixed with ambergris, and it is not called a laṭīmah unless it is mixed with something else.
اللطيمة سوق العطارين
Al-laṭīmah is the perfumers' market.
واللطيمة العير تحمل البر والطيب
And al-laṭīmah is the camel carrying wheat and perfume.
اللطيمة سوق فيها بز وطيب
Al-laṭīmah is a market with textiles and perfume.
ولا طمه فتلا طما
And he struck him, and they struck each other.
والتطمت الأمواج: ضرب بعضها بعضا
And the waves crashed: striking against each other.
يلطمهن بالخمر النساء أي ينفضن ما عليها من الغبار
Women shake them with their cloaks, meaning they shake off the dust from them.
فاستعار له اللطم
So he borrowed the term 'laṭm' for it.
وروي يطلمهن، وهو الضرب بالكف
And it is narrated 'yaṭlumuhunna', which is striking with the palm.
