And a man is 'kutmah', like 'hamzah', if he keeps his secret.

And he concealed his secret from me: he kept it from me.
ويقال للفرس إذا ضاق منخره عن نفسه: قد كتم الربو؛
And it is said of a horse, when its nostril narrows upon itself: it has suppressed its wheezing.
كأن حفيف منخره، إذا ما ... كتمن الربو، كير مستعار
As if the rustling of its nostril, when it suppresses its wheezing, is like a borrowed bellows.
ورجل كاتم للسر وكتوم.
And a man is a keeper of secrets ('kaatim') and secretive ('katum').
وسر كاتم أي مكتوم؛
And a secret is 'kaatim', meaning hidden ('maktum').
واستكتمه الخبر والسر: سأله كتمه.
And he asked him to conceal the news and the secret: he asked him to hide it.
وناقة كتوم ومكتام: لا تشول بذنبها عند اللقاح ولا يعلم بحملها، كتمت تكتم كتوما؛
And a she-camel is 'katum' and 'muktaam': she does not lift her tail during mating and her pregnancy is not known; she suppressed, she suppresses, with 'kutuman'.
فهو لجولان القلاص شمام، ... إذا سما فوق جموح مكتام
He is proud for the running of the young camels, ... when he mounts a stubborn, secretive she-camel.
والكتيم: القوس التي لا تنشق.
And 'al-kutaim': the bow that does not split.
وسحاب مكتوم «1»: لا رعد فيه.
And 'mus-haabun maktoom': a cloud with no thunder in it.
والكتوم أيضا: الناقة التي لا ترغو إذا ركبها صاحبها، والجمع كتم؛
And 'al-kutoom' also: the she-camel that does not bellow when its owner rides it, and the plural is 'kutum'.
كتوم الرغاء إذا هجرت، ... وكانت بقية ذود كتم
Quiet in bellowing when neglected, ... and it was the remainder of a herd of 'kutum'.
وكاتمة، وقيل: هي التي لا شق فيها، وقيل: هي التي لا صدع في نبعها، وقيل: هي التي لا صدع فيها كانت من نبع أو غيره؛
And 'kaatimah', and it is said: it is the one that has no crack, and it is said: it is the one that has no fissure in its wood, and it is said: it is the one that has no crack in it, whether from wood or otherwise.
كتوم طلاع الكف لا دون ملئها، ... ولا عجسها عن موضع الكف أفضلا
Quiet, filling the hand, not less than its fullness, ... nor its curve exceeding the place of the hand.
وفي الحديث: أنه كان اسم قوس سيدنا رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، الكتوم ؛ سميت به لانخفاض صوتها إذا رمي عنها، وقد كتمت كتوما.
And in the hadith: the name of the bow of our master, the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, was 'Al-Kutum'; it was named so because of the low sound it made when shot, and it had suppressed its sound ('kataman').
كتمت المزادة تكتم كتوما إذا ذهب مرحها وسيلان الماء من مخارزها أول ما تسرب، وهي مزادة كتوم.
She suppressed the waterskin, she suppresses it, with 'kutuman', when its initial eagerness and water leakage from its seams disappear, and it is a 'katum' waterskin.
وسقاء كتيم، وكتم السقاء يكتم كتمانا وكتوما: أمسك ما فيه من اللبن والشراب، وذلك حين تذهب عينته ثم يدهن السقاء بعد ذلك، فإذا أرادوا أن يستقوا فيه سربوه، والتسريب: أن يصبوا فيه الماء بعد الدهن حتى يكتم خرزه ويسكن الماء ثم يستقى فيه.
And a 'kutaim' waterskin, and the waterskin 'katama' conceals, with 'kitman' and 'kutuman': it holds what is in it of milk and drink, and that is when its freshness is gone, then the waterskin is greased afterwards, and when they want to draw from it, they let it seep, and 'tasrib' is: they pour water into it after greasing until its stitching is sealed and the water settles, then they draw from it.
وخرز كتيم: لا ينضح الماء ولا يخرج ما فيه.
And 'kharazun kutaim': the stitching does not ooze water and what is inside does not come out.
وسالت دموع العين ثم تحدرت، ... ولله دمع ساكب ونموم
And the tears of the eye flowed and then streamed down, ... and by God, tears flowing and shedding.
فما شبهت إلا مزادة كاتم ... وهت، أو وهى من بينهن كتوم
And I likened it to nothing but a 'kaatim' waterskin that leaked, or a 'katum' that was weak among them.
وحكى كراع: لا تسألوني عن كتمة، بسكون التاء، أي كلمة.
And Kurra' narrated: Do not ask me about 'katmah', with a sukoon on the 'ta', meaning a word.
ورجل أكتم: عظيم البطن، وقيل: شبعان.
And a man is 'ak'tam': large-bellied, and it is said: satiated.
والكتم، بالتحريك: نبات يخلط مع الوسمة للخضاب الأسود.
And 'al-katm', with harakah: a plant mixed with 'al-wasmah' for black dye.
روي عن أبي بكر، رضي الله عنه، أنه كان يختضب بالحناء والكتم ، وفي رواية: يصبغ بالحناء والكتم ؛
It is narrated from Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, that he used to dye his hair with henna and 'al-katm', and in another narration: he dyed with henna and 'al-katm'.
وشوذت شمسهم إذا طلعت ... بالجلب [بالجلب] هفا كأنه كتم
And their sun was obscured when it rose ... with a strong wind, it shone as if it were 'katm'.
يشبه أن يراد به استعمال الكتم مفردا عن الحناء، فإن الحناء إذا خضب به مع الكتم جاء أسود وقد صح النهي عن السواد، قال: ولعل الحديث بالحناء أو الكتم على التخيير، ولكن الروايات على اختلافها بالحناء والكتم.
It is likely that it refers to using 'al-katm' alone without henna, for henna, when mixed with 'al-katm', results in black, and the prohibition of black has been confirmed. He said: Perhaps the hadith about henna or 'al-katm' is optional, but the narrations differ regarding henna and 'al-katm'.
ويشبب الحناء بالكتم ليشتد لونه، قال: ولا ينبت الكتم إلا في الشواهق ولذلك يقل.
And henna is mixed with 'al-katm' to intensify its color. He said: 'Al-katm' only grows on high peaks, and therefore it is scarce.
وهو أخضر وورقه كورق الآس أو أصغر؛
It is green and its leaves are like myrtle leaves or smaller.
ثم ينوش إذا آد النهار له، ... بعد الترقب من نيم ومن كتم
Then it reaches when the day becomes hot for it, ... after waiting from sleep and from concealment.
كنا نمتشط مع أسماء قبل الإحرام وندهن بالمكتومة ؛
We used to comb our hair with Asma' before ihram and apply 'al-maktoomah' oil.
هي دهن من أدهان العرب أحمر يجعل فيه الزعفران، وقيل: يجعل فيه الكتم، وهو نبت يخلط مع الوسمة ويصبغ به الشعر أسود، وقيل: هو الوسمة.
It is a red oil from the oils of the Arabs, into which saffron is put, and it is said: 'al-katm' is put into it, which is a plant mixed with 'al-wasmah' and used to dye hair black, and it is said: it is 'al-wasmah'.
والأكثم: العظيم البطن.
And 'al-aktham': the large-bellied.
وأيمت منا التي لم تلد ... كتيم بنيك، وكنت الحليلا «1»
And widowed from us is she who did not give birth ... to the 'kutaim' of your children, and you were the one to be appeased.
وابن أم مكتوم: مؤذن سيدنا رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، كان يؤذن بعد بلال لأنه كان أعمى فكان يقتدي ببلال.
And Ibn Umm Maktum: the muezzin of our master, the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, he used to call the adhan after Bilal because he was blind, so he would follow Bilal.
احفر تكتم بين الفرث والدم ؛
Dig 'Taktem' between the dung and the blood.
تكتم: اسم بئر زمزم، سميت بذلك لأنها كانت اندفنت بعد جرهم فصارت مكتومة حتى أظهرها عبد المطلب.
'Taktem': the name of the well of Zamzam, named so because it was buried after Jurhum and became hidden until Abd al-Muttalib revealed it.
وبنو كتامة: حي من حمير صاروا إلى بربر حين افتتحها افريقس الملك، وقيل: كتامة قبيلة من البربر.
And Banu Katama: a tribe from Himyar who went to Berber when King Ifrīqis conquered it, and it is said: Katama is a tribe of the Berbers.
قد صرح السير عن كتمان، وابتذلت ... وقع المحاجن بالمهرية الذقن
The journey has clearly indicated 'Kutman', and I have worn out ... the hooves of the Mahra camels with their chins.
