قال ثعلب: قال ابن ماسويه ينبغي للرجل أن يكون في الشتاء كقيم الحمام، وأما الصيف فهو حمام كله
Tha'lab said: Ibn Masawaih said, it is fitting for a man to be like the custodian of the bathhouse in winter, but as for summer, it is all bathhouse.
وعندي أن قامة إنما هو جمع قائم على ما يكثر في هذا الضرب
And I think that 'qamah' is merely a plural of 'qā'im' according to what is common in this category.
والملة القيمة: المعتدلة، والأمة القيمة كذلك
And the upright community: the moderate one, and the upright nation likewise.
وذلك دين القيمة
And that is the religion of the upright.
دين قيم
A straight religion.
دينا قيما ملة إبراهيم
A straight religion, the religion of Abraham.
القيم هو المستقيم
The upright is the straight one.
وكذلك دين قويم وقوام
And likewise a sound religion and sustenance.

فهم ضربوكم حين جرتم عن الهدى بأسيافهم، حتى استقمتم على القيم
So they struck you with their swords when you deviated from guidance, until you became straight upon the upright way.
وأشهد أنك، عند المليك، أرسلت حقا بدين قيم
And I bear witness that you, with the King, were sent with a true, upright religion.
إلا أن القيم مصدر بمعنى الاستقامة
Except that 'al-qayyim' is a مصدر (verbal noun) meaning uprightness.
والله تعالى القيوم والقيام
And God Almighty is the Everlasting and the Sustainer.

And He is the Self-Subsisting absolutely, not by others, and with that, every existing thing is sustained by Him, so that the existence of anything and the permanence of its existence cannot be conceived except by Him.
والقوام من العيش: ما يقيمك
And sustenance from living: that which sustains you.
أو لذي فقر مدقع حتى يصيب قواما من عيش أي ما يقوم بحاجته الضرورية
Or for one in dire poverty until he obtains sustenance of living, meaning what suffices his essential need.
قوام العيش: عماده الذي يقوم به
The sustenance of living: its pillar by which it is sustained.
قوام الجسم: تمامه
The completeness of the body: its perfection.
قوام كل شيء: ما استقام به
The sustenance of everything: that by which it is straightened.
رأس قوام الدين وابن رأس

وقومت الشيء، فهو قويم أي مستقيم

And it is said, I have been contending with so-and-so in this matter, meaning I am struggling with him.
من جالسه أو قاومه في حاجة صابره
Whoever sits with him or contends with him in a need, he is patient with him.
تسوية الصف من إقامة الصلاة أي من تمامها وكمالها
The straightening of the row is from the establishment of prayer, meaning from its completeness and perfection.
قد قامت الصلاة فمعناه قام أهلها أو حان قيامهم
The prayer has been established, meaning its people have stood up or their time has come.
في العين القائمة ثلث الدية ؛ هي الباقية في موضعها صحيحة وإنما ذهب نظرها وإبصارها

قوم كل رجل: شيعته وعشيرته
The people of every man: his followers and his clan.
إن نساني الشيطان شيئا من صلاتي فليسبح القوم وليصفق النساء
If Satan makes me forget something of my prayer, let the people glorify (God) and let the women clap.
القوم في الأصل مصدر قام ثم غلب على الرجال دون النساء، ولذلك قابلهن به، وسموا بذلك لأنهم قوامون على النساء بالأمور التي ليس للنساء أن يقمن بها
Al-qawm in origin is a masdar of 'qāma', then it was predominantly used for men and not women, and that is why they were contrasted with them, and they were so named because they are the maintainers of women in matters that women are not to undertake.
القوم الرجال دون النساء لا واحد له من لفظه
Al-qawm are men, not women, with no singular form from its word.
وكذب به قومك
And your people denied it.
كذبت قوم نوح المرسلين
The people of Noah denied the messengers.
يا أيها القوم كفوا عنا وكف عنا، على اللفظ وعلى المعنى
O people, refrain from us, and refrain from us, according to the wording and the meaning.
فإن يعذر القلب العشية في الصبا فؤادك، لا يعذرك فيه الأقاوم
If the heart excuses your passion in the evening, the groups will not excuse you for it.
من مبلغ عمرو بن لأي، حيث كان من الأقاوم
Who will inform Amr ibn La'ay, wherever he may be among the groups?
فقد وكلنا بها قوما ليسوا بها بكافرين
We have entrusted to it a people who are not disbelievers in it.
أن تولى العباد استبدل الله بهم الملائكة
If the servants turn away, God will replace them with angels.
يستبدل قوما غيركم من أهل فارس
He will replace you with a people other than you from the people of Persia.
إن تتولوا يستبدل قوما أطوع له منكم
If you turn away, He will replace you with a people more obedient to Him than you.
وفيها من عباد الله قوم، ملائك ذللوا، وهم صعاب
And among the servants of God are a people, angels made submissive, and they are difficult.
فقيد إلى المقامة لا يراها
So let him be confined to the gathering, he will not see it.
ومقامة غلب الرقاب كأنهم جن، لدى باب الحصير، قيام
And a gathering of noble necks as if they were jinn, at the door of the king, standing.
وفيهم مقامات حسان وجوههم، وأندية ينتابها القول والفعل
And among them are gatherings with beautiful faces, and assemblies where speech and action are sought.
قام بي ظهري أي أوجعني
My back afflicted me, meaning it pained me.
وقامت بي عيناي
My eyes afflicted me.
يوم القيامة يوم البعث يقوم فيه الخلق بين يدي الحي القيوم
The Day of Resurrection is the day of the raising, on which creation will stand before the Living, the Everlasting.
أتظلم رجلا يوم القيامة؟
Do you wrong a man on the Day of Resurrection?
مضت قويمة من الليل أي ساعة أو قطعة
A portion of the night passed, meaning an hour or a piece.
وكذلك مضى قويم من الليل، بغير هاء، أي وقت غير محدود
And likewise, a time of the night passed, without 'ha', meaning an indefinite period.
