Ibn Barrī said: meaning Hisham ibn al-Mughirah, he said: And al-iqtithām is the act of making easy.
وقثم له من العطاء قثما: أكثر، وقيل: قثم له أعطاه دفعة من المال جيدة مثل قذم وغذم وغثم.
And he qathama-d for him from the giving qathman: he gave much, and it was said: he qathama-d for him, he gave him a good lump sum of money, like qadhama, ghadhama, and gathama.
وقثم: اسم رجل مشتق منه، وهو معدول عن قاثم وهو المعطي.
And Quthm: a man's name derived from it, and it is a diversion from qāthim, which is the giver.
ويقال للرجل إذا كان كثير العطاء: مائح قثم؛
And it is said of a man if he is very generous: mā'iḥ qathm.
ورجل قثم وقذم إذا كان معطاء.

وفي الحديث: أتاني ملك فقال أنت قثم وخلقك قيم ؛
And in the Hadith: An angel came to me and said, 'You are Quthm, and your creation is sound.'
القثم: المجتمع الخلق، وقيل: الجامع الكامل، وقيل: الجموع للخير، وبه سمي الرجل قثم، وقيل: قثم معدول عن قاثم، وهو الكثير العطاء.
Al-Quthm: the well-built of creation, and it is said: the complete gatherer, and it is said: the gatherer of good, and by this the man was named Quthm, and it is said: Quthm is a diversion from Qāthim, who is the abundant giver.
ويقال للذيخ قثم، واسم فعله القثمة، وقد قثم يقثم قثما وقثمة.
And it is said of the male hyena: quthm, and the name of its action is al-qathmah, and indeed he qathuma, he qathim-s, qathman and qathmah.
والقثم: لطخ الجعر ونحوه.
And al-qathm: the smear of dung and the like.
وقثام: من أسماء الضبع، سميت به لالتطاخها بالجعر؛
And qathām: from the names of the hyena, it was named so because of its rolling in dung.
قال سيبويه: سميت به لأنها تقثم أي تقطع.
Sibawayh said: It was named so because it qathim-s, meaning it cuts.
وقثم: الذكر من الضباع، وكلاهما معدول عن فاعل وفاعلة، والأنثى قثام مثل حذام، سميت الضبع بذلك لتلطخها بجعرها.
And quthm: the male of the hyenas, and both are diversions from fā'il and fā'ilah, and the female is qathām like ḥadhām, the hyena was named thus for its smearing with its dung.
والقثمة: الغبرة.
And al-qathmah: the dustiness.
وقثم قثما وقثامة: اغبر.
And he qathuma qathman and qathāmah: he became dusty.
ويقال للأمة: يا قثام، كما يقال لها: يا ذفار.
And it is said to the female slave: O Qathām, just as it is said to her: O Dhifār.
قال ابن بري: سمي الذكر من الضبعان قثم لبطئه في مشيه، وكذلك الأنثى.
Ibn Barrī said: The male of the hyenas was named Quthm for its slowness in its gait, and likewise the female.
يقال: هو يقثم في مشيه، ويقال: هو يقثم أي يكسب، ولذلك سمي أبا كاسب، وهذا هو الصحيح.
It is said: He qathim-s in his gait, and it is said: He qathim-s, meaning he earns, and for that reason he was named Abu Kasib, and this is the correct meaning.
