And it was said: Al-ghashmsham and al-mughsham are men who act headstrong, nothing deters them from what they want and desire out of their bravery.
وإنه لذو غشمشمة
And indeed, he possesses boldness.
ورد غشمشم إذا ركبت رؤوسها فلم تثن عن وجهها
And a she-camel is gashmsham if it acts headstrong and is not turned from its course.
إذا أرزمت جاءت بورد غشمشم
When it bellows, it comes with a strong-blowing wind.
والغشوم: الذي يخبط الناس ويأخذ كل ما قدر عليه
And al-ghashoom: is one who strikes people and takes all he can get.
والأصل فيه من غشم الحاطب، وهو أن يحتطب ليلا فيقطع كل ما قدر عليه بلا نظر ولا فكر
And the origin of this is from the firewood gatherer's ghashm, which is gathering firewood at night and cutting whatever he can without looking or thinking.
تجهز فاغشم الناس سائلا، كما يغشم الشجراء بالليل حاطب
Prepare yourself and oppress the people with your requests, just as a firewood gatherer strikes the trees at night.
وقد لقيت أفتاء بكر بن وائل، وهزان بالبطحاء ضربا غشمشما
Indeed, we encountered the leaders of Bakr bin Wa'il and Hazan in the plain with a fierce, unthinking strike.
إذا ما غضبنا غضبة مضرية، هتكنا حجاب الشمس أو مطرت دما
When we become angry with a Mudarite anger, we tear through the veil of the sun or it rains blood.
وإنشد: قتلنا ناجيا بقتيل عمرو، وجر الطالب الترة الغشوم
And he recited: We killed Najiyan for the sake of Amr's slain, and the pursuer brought forth the oppressive vengeance.
وناقة غشمشمة: عزيزة النفس
And a gashmsham she-camel: is proud and high-spirited.
يقول: تزهق قائدها أي تسبقه من نشاطها
He means: it outruns its leader, meaning it gets ahead of it due to its vigor.
والأغشم: اليابس القديم من النبت
And al-aghsham: is the dry, old vegetation.
كأن صوت شخبها، إذا خما، صوت أفاع في خشي أغشما
As if the sound of its milk dripping, when it became thick, was like the sound of snakes in dry, tough wood.
