وقيل: أعوام عوم من باب شعر شاعر وشغل شاغل وشيب شائب وموت مائت، يذهبون في كل ذلك إلى المبالغة، فواحدها على هذا عائم؛
And it is said: 'a'wam 'awm is from the pattern of 'shi'r sha'ir, and 'shughl shaghil, and 'shayb sha'ib, and 'mawt ma'it', they go in all of that to exaggeration, so its singular on this basis is 'a'im.

وهو في التقدير جمع عائم إلا أنه لا يفرد بالذكر لأنه ليس باسم، وإنما هو توكيد،
And it is, in estimation, a plural of 'a'im, except that it is not mentioned alone because it is not a noun, but rather an emphasis.
صواب إنشاد هذا الشعر: ومر أعوام؛
The correct recitation of this poetry is: and the passing of years;
وعام معيم: كأعوم؛ عن اللحياني.

ناقة بازل عام وبازل عامها

والمعاومة المنهي عنها أن تبيع زرع عامك أو ثمر نخلك أو شجرك لعامين أو ثلاثة.
And the forbidden 'mu'aawamah' is that you sell your year's crop or the fruit of your palms or your trees for two or three years.
نهى عن بيع النخل معاومة ، وهو أن تبيع ثمر النخل أو الكرم أو الشجر سنتين أو ثلاثا فما فوق ذلك.
He forbade the sale of palm trees by 'mu'aawamah', which is that you sell the fruit of the palm, vine, or tree for two or three years and more than that.
ويقال: عاومت النخلة إذا حملت سنة ولم تحمل أخرى، وهي مفاعلة من العام السنة، وكذلك سانهت حملت عاما وعاما لا.
And it is said: the palm tree 'aawamat if it bore fruit one year and not another, and it is a 'mufa'alah' from 'a'am (year), meaning the year. Likewise, it 'asaanahat' if it bore fruit one year and not the next.
من أن شجاك طلل عامي
from that a ruined dwelling of last year grieved you
ولقيته ذات العويم أي لدن ثلاث سنين مضت أو أربع.
And I met him 'dhaat al-'uwaym', meaning from three years ago or four.
يقال جاورت بني فلان ذات العويم، ومعناه العام الثالث مما مضى فصاعدا إلى ما بلغ العشر.
It is said: I lived next to the children of so-and-so 'dhaat al-'uwaym', and its meaning is the third year from what has passed, and onwards up to ten.
أتيته ذات الزمين وذات العويم أي منذ ثلاثة أزمان وأعوام،
I came to him 'dhaat az-zamin' and 'dhaat al-'uwaym', meaning from three periods and years ago,
هو كقولك لقيته مذ سنيات، وإنما أنث فقيل ذات العويم وذات الزمين لأنهم ذهبوا به إلى المرة والأتية الواحدة.
It is like your saying: I met him a few years ago. And it was feminized, so it was said 'dhaat al-'uwaym' and 'dhaat az-zamin' because they intended it to mean a single instance or occurrence.
وقولهم لقيته ذات العويم وذلك إذا لقيته بين الأعوام، كما يقال لقيته ذات الزمين وذات مرة.
And their saying: I met him 'dhaat al-'uwaym', and that is when you meet him between the years, just as it is said: I met him 'dhaat az-zamin' and 'dhaat marrah'.
عوم الكرم تعويما: كثر حمله عاما وقل آخر.
The vine 'awwamat 'ta'wiman': its yield was abundant one year and scarce another.
عاومت النخلة: حملت عاما ولم تحمل آخر.
The palm tree 'aawamat: it bore fruit one year and not another.
عنب معوم إذا حمل عاما ولم يحمل عاما.

وشحم معوم أي شحم عام بعد عام؛

علافيف قد ظاهرن نيا معوما أي شحما معوما؛

And ships 'awm: floating;
إذا اعوججن قلت: صاحب، قوم ... بالدو أمثال السفين العوم
When they deviate, you say: Companion, stand up... in the desert like floating ships
وعامت النجوم عوما: جرت، وأصل ذلك في الماء.
And the stars 'aawamat 'awman': they moved, and the origin of that is in water.
والعومة، بالضم: دويبة تسبح في الماء كأنها فص أسود مدملكة، والجمع عوم؛
And al-'awmah, with dammah: a small creature that swims in water as if it were a round black gem, and its plural is 'awm;
قد ترد النهي تنزى عومه، ... فتستبيح ماءه فتلهمه،
It may approach the water, leaping with its 'awmah, ... and drink its water and swallow it,
والعوام، بالتشديد: الفرس السابح في جريه.

يسمى الفرس السابح عواما يعوم في جريه ويسبح.

And al-'aammah: a thing made from branches of trees and the like, by which the river is crossed, and it floats on the water, and its plural is 'aam and 'awm.
