And the Arabs say: a man is mu'amm makhawwal if he is noble of paternal uncles and abundant in maternal uncles.

ويقال فيه معم مخول، قال الأزهري: ولم أسمعه لغير الليث ولكن يقال: معم ملم إذا كان يعم الناس ببره وفضله، ويلمهم أي يصلح أمرهم ويجمعهم.

And it is said for it mu'amm makhawwal. Al-Layth said: I have not heard it from anyone other than Al-Layth, but it is said: mu'amm mulimm if he encompasses people with his kindness and virtue, and mulimm means he mends their affairs and gathers them.

وتعممته النساء: دعونه عما، كما تقول تأخاه وتأباه وتبناه؛

And women called him 'uncle' (ta'ammama): they called him 'amm, as you say ta'akhahu, ta'abahu, and tabanahu.

وهما ابنا عم: تفرد العم ولا تثنيه لأنك إنما تريد أن كل واحد منهما مضاف إلى هذه القرابة، كما تقول في حد الكنية أبوا زيد، إنما تريد أن كل واحد منهما مضاف إلى هذه الكنية، هذا كلام سيبويه.

And they are two sons of an uncle (ibna 'amm): the singular 'amm is used and not dualized because you intend that each of them is attributed to this kinship, just as you say in the case of a kunyah (sobriquet) 'abu Zayd', you intend that each of them is attributed to this kunyah. This is the statement of Sibawayh.

ويقال: هما ابنا عم ولا يقال هما ابنا خال، ويقال: هما ابنا خالة ولا يقال ابنا عمة،

And it is said: they are two sons of an uncle (ibna 'amm) and it is not said they are two sons of a maternal uncle (ibna khal), and it is said: they are two daughters of a maternal aunt (ibnata khalah) and it is not said daughters of a paternal aunt (ibnata 'ammah).

وبيني وبين فلان عمومة كما يقال أبوة وخؤولة.

And between me and so-and-so is 'umumah (paternal kinship) just as abuwah (fatherhood) and khu'uwah (maternal kinship) are said.

يا ابنة عما، لا تلومي واهجعي، ... لا تسمعيني منك لوما واسمعي

O daughter of an uncle ('amma), do not blame and sleep soundly... do not let me hear blame from you and listen.

ائذني له فإنه عمج ، فإنه يريد عمك من الرضاعة، فأبدل كاف الخطاب جيما، وهي لغة قوم من اليمن؛

Allow him in, for he is your 'amaj, meaning he is your foster uncle, and the kaf of the second person pronoun has been replaced with jim, and this is a dialect of a people from Yemen.

والجمع عمائم وعمام؛

And the plural is 'ama'im and 'imam.

والعرب تقول لما وضعوا عمامهم عرفناهم، فإما أن يكون جمع عمامة جمع التكسير، وإما أن يكون من باب طلحة وطلح،

And the Arabs say, 'When they put down their turbans, we recognized them,' either as a broken plural of 'imamah, or from the pattern of Talhah and Talh.

إذا كشف اليوم العماس عن استه، ... فلا يرتدي مثلي ولا يتعمم

If the darkness of the day reveals its underside, then no one will wear a cloak like me, nor will they wear a turban (ta'ammama).

واعتم بالزبد الجعد الخراطيم

And he wore a turban (i'tama) with the curly-haired, long-nosed ones.

وأرخى عمامته: أمن وترفه لأن الرجل إنما يرخي عمامته عند الرخاء؛

And he loosened his turban ('ammatahu): from security and ease, because a man only loosens his turban in times of ease.

وفيهم إذ عمم المعمم

And among them when the crowned one (al-mu'ammim) was crowned (commama).

وكانوا إذا سودوا رجلا عمموه عمامة حمراء؛

And when they made a man king, they would crown him with a red turban ('ammamah).

وشاة معممة: بيضاء الرأس.

And a mu'ammah sheep: white-headed.

وفرس معمم: أبيض الهامة دون العنق، وقيل: هو من الخيل الذي ابيضت ناصيته كلها ثم انحدر البياض إلى منبت الناصية وما حولها من القونس.

And a mu'ammam horse: white on the head but not the neck, and it is said: it is from horses whose forelock has become entirely white, then the whiteness descended to the base of the forelock and its surroundings from the forehead.

والمعمم من الخيل وغيرها: الذي ابيض أذناه ومنيت ناصيته وما حولها دون سائر جسده؛

And the mu'ammam among horses and others: is one whose ears have turned white, and its forelock and its surroundings have become white, while the rest of its body has not.

والعامة: عيدان مشدودة تركب في البحر ويعبر عليها، وخفف ابن الأعرابي الميم من هذا الحرف فقال: عامة مثل هامة الرأس وقامة العلق وهو الصحيح.

And 'ammah: tied logs that are placed on the sea and crossed upon, and Ibn al-A'rabi lightened the mim of this word, saying: 'ammah like haamah of the head and qamah of the leech, and this is correct.

والعميم: الطويل من الرجال والنبات، ومنه حديث الرؤيا: فأتينا على روضة معتمة أي وافية النبات طويلته،

And 'amim: the tall one among men and plants, and from it is the hadith of the vision: 'We came upon a lush meadow ('awdah mu'tamah), meaning abundant in plants and tall.'

وكل ما اجتمع وكثر عميم، والجمع عمم؛

And everything that gathers and is abundant is 'amim, and the plural is 'amam.

والعميم يبيس البهمى.

And 'amim is the dry bhama grass.

ويقال: اعتم النبت اعتماما إذا التف وطال.

And it is said: the plant 'i'tama if it intertwined and grew tall.

وشيء عميم أي تام، والجمع عمم مثل سرير وسرر.

And something 'amim means complete, and the plural is 'amam like sarir and surur.

وجارية عميمة وعماء: طويلة تامة القوام والخلق،، والذكر أعم.

And a 'amimah and 'ama' woman: tall, complete in build and form, and the masculine is 'a'amm.

ونخلة عميمة: طويلة، والجمع عم؛

And a 'amimah palm tree: tall, and the plural is 'amm.

ونخلة عم؛ عن اللحياني: إما أن يكون فعلا وهي أقل، وإما أن يكون فعلا أصلها عمم، فسكنت الميم وأدغمت، ونظيرها على هذا ناقة علط وقوس فرج وهو باب إلى السعة.

And a 'amm palm tree; from Al-Lihyani: either it is 'af'al, which is less common, or it is 'af'al whose origin is 'amamim, so the mim was silenced and assimilated, and its parallel is a camel 'alat and a bow faraj, which is a path to expansion.

ويقال: نخلة عميم ونخل عم إذا كانت طوالا؛

And it is said: an 'amim palm tree and 'amm palms if they are tall.

فلقد رأيت النخل يضرب في أصولها بالفؤوس وإنها لنخل عم ؛

So I saw the palm trees being struck at their bases with axes, and they were indeed tall palm trees ('amm).

العم التامة في طولها والتفافها؛

Al-'amm: the complete one in its height and density.

سحق يمتعها الصفا، وسريه ... طوالا جذوعها، عمما

Distant, the rock enjoys it, and its peak... its trunks are tall, abundant ('amama).

أكرموا عمتكم النخلة ؛ سماها عمة للمشاكلة في أنها إذا قطع رأسها يبست كما إذا قطع رأس الإنسان مات،

Honor your paternal aunt, the palm tree; it was named 'paternal aunt' for the similarity in that if its head is cut off, it withers, just as if a human's head is cut off, they die.

وعم إذا طول، وعم إذا طال.

And 'amma means to be long, and 'amma means to be tall.

ونبت يعموم: طويل؛

And a plant ya'mum: tall.

والعمم: عظم الخلق في الناس وغيرهم.

And 'amam: greatness of creation in humans and others.

والعمم: الجسم التام.

And 'amam: the complete body.

ويقال: إن جسمه لعمم وإنه لعمم الجسم.

And it is said: indeed his body is 'amam, and indeed he is of 'amam body.

وجسم عمم: تام.

And an 'amam body: complete.

وأمر عمم: تام عام وهو من ذلك؛

And an 'amam matter: complete and general, and it is from that.

ومنكب عمم: طويل؛

And an 'amam shoulder: long.

استوى فلان على عممه وعممه؛ يريدون به تمام جسمه وشبابه وماله؛

So-and-so stood up on his 'amamah and 'amamah; they mean by it the completeness of his body, youth, and wealth.

حتى إذا استوى على عممه ، شدد للازدواج، أراد على طوله واعتدال شبابه؛

Until he stood up on his 'amamah, strengthened for pairing, meaning his height and the moderation of his youth.

يهب البقرة العميمة أي التامة الخلق.

He gives the 'amimah cow, meaning complete in creation.

وعمهم الأمر يعمهم عموما: شملهم، يقال: عمهم بالعطية.

And the matter 'ammahum (encompassed them) 'umum: it included them; it is said: he encompassed them with the gift.

والعامة: خلاف الخاصة؛

And al-'ammah: the opposite of al-khassah (the special).

سميت بذلك لأنها تعم بالشر.

It was named thus because it encompasses evil.

والعمم: العامة اسم للجمع؛

And al-'amam: al-'ammah is a noun for the collective.

أنت ربيع الأقربين والعمم

You are the spring of the close ones and the general populace ('amam).

فالعمي العام، والقصري الخاص.

So al-'ammi is general, and al-qasri is specific.

فيرد ذلك على العامة بالخاصة ، أراد أن العامة كانت لا تصل إليه في هذا الوقت، فكانت الخاصة تخبر العامة بما سمعت منه، فكأنه أوصل الفوائد إلى العامة بالخاصة

And he would return that to the general populace through the special ones. He meant that the general populace could not reach him at this time, so the special ones would inform the general populace of what they heard from him, so it was as if he conveyed the benefits to the general populace through the special ones.

إذا توضأت ولم تعمم فتيمم أي إذا لم يكن في الماء وضوء تام فتيمم، وأصله من العموم.

If you perform ablution and do not 'ammim (make general/complete), then perform tayammum, meaning if there is not complete ablution with water, then perform tayammum, and its origin is from 'umum (generality).

ورجل معم: يعم القوم بخيره.

And a mu'amm man: he encompasses the people with his goodness.

رجل معم يعم الناس بمعروفه أي يجمعهم، وكذلك ملم يلمهم أي يجمعهم،

A man is mu'amm, he encompasses people with his kindness, meaning he gathers them; likewise, mulimm, he gathers them, meaning he brings them together.

وقد عممناك أمرنا أي ألزمناك،

And we have 'ammannak (made general/obligated you with) our command, meaning we have obligated you.

والمعمم السيد الذي يقلده القوم أمورهم ويلجأ إليه العوام؛

And al-mu'ammim is the master whom the people entrust their affairs to, and the common people resort to him.

ومن خير ما جمع الناشئ المعمم ... خير وزند وري والعمم

And from the best that the rising leader ('al-nash'i al-mu'ammami) gathered... are goodness, flint, sustenance, and the capable ones ('amam).

العمم من الرجال: الكافي الذي يعمهم بالخير؛

Al-'amam among men: the sufficient one who encompasses them with goodness.

خلق عمم أي تام، والعمم في الطول والتمام؛

Khuluq 'amam means complete, and 'amam is in height and completeness.

وقصب رؤد الشباب عممه

And the reeds of youthful prime are its 'amamah (completeness).

إذا استجمعت أسنانه قيل: قد اعتم عمم، فإذا أسَن فهو فارض،

When his teeth have all come in, it is said: he has 'i'tama 'amam (reached full growth); and when he ages, he is fariḍ.
