Abu Ubayd said: The 'ukum are the loads and the panniers containing vessels of various foods and goods, the singular of which is 'akm (with kasrah).
وفي حديث علي، رضي الله عنه: نفاضة كنفاضة العكم
And in the report of Ali, may God be pleased with him: A scattering like the scattering of the 'akm.
وسمعت العرب تقول لخدمهم يوم الظعن اعتكموا
And I heard the Arabs say to their servants on the day of departure: 'Prepare the loads'.
وقال الأزهري: كل عدل عكم، وجمعه أعكام وعكوم
And Al-Azharī said: Every pannier is an 'akm, and its plural is 'a'kam and 'ukum.
يقول الرجل لصاحبه اعكمني وأعكمني، فمعنى اعكمني أي اعكم لي
A man says to his companion 'akimni and 'akimni, meaning 'akim li for me.
وأما أعكمني بقطع الألف فمعناه أعني على العكم
But 'a'kimni with a cut alif means help me with the tying.
وعكمت الرجل العكم إذا عكمته له، مثل قولك حلبته الناقة أي حلبتها له

And he recited: Until it filled the 'akuma ... from the hollow reeds and the hollows.
