And I heard the Arabs say for a foolish man, ṭughāmah and dughāmah, and the plural is al-ṭughām.
يا طغام الأحلام
O rabble of intellects!
إنما هو من باب إشفى المرفق، وذلك أن الطغام لما كان ضعيفا استجاز أن يصفهم به
It is only from the category of the olecranon (tip of the elbow), and that is because when the ṭughām was weak, it was permissible to describe them with it.
كأنه قال يا ضعاف الأحلام ويا طاشة الأحلام؛ معناه من لا عقل له ولا معرفة
As if he said, O weak of intellects, and O scattered of intellects; meaning, those who have no reason or knowledge.
وقيل: هم أوغاد الناس وأرذالهم
And it was said: they are the base and ignoble people.
مئبرة العرقوب إشفى المرفق لما كان الإشفى دقيقا حادا استجاز أن يصفها به كأنه قال: دقيقة المرفق أو حادة المرفق
The base of the ankle is the olecranon of the elbow; since the olecranon is fine and sharp, it was permissible to describe it as such, as if to say: the fine part of the elbow or the sharp part of the elbow.
وكذلك كل جوهر فيه معنى الفعل يجوز فيه مثل هذا
And likewise, anything of essence that carries the meaning of an action, such a description is permissible for it.
