What they took as gods that was not an image was a 'wathan', and if it had an image, it was a 'ṣanam'.
الفرق بين الوثن والصنم أن الوثن ما كان له جثة من خشب أو حجر أو فضة ينحت ويعبد، والصنم الصورة بلا جثة
The difference between a 'wathan' and a 'ṣanam' is that a 'wathan' is what has a body of wood, stone, or silver that is carved and worshipped, and a 'ṣanam' is the image without a body.
ومن العرب من جعل الوثن المنصوب صنما
And some Arabs made the erected idol a 'ṣanam'.
لم يكن حي من أحياء العرب إلا ولها صنم يعبدونها يسمونها أنثى بني فلان
There was no tribe among the Arab tribes except that they had an idol they worshipped, which they called the female of Banu Fulan.
والإناث كل شيء ليس فيه روح مثل الخشبة والحجارة
And 'al-ināth' is everything that does not have a spirit, like wood and stones.
والصنمة الداهية
And 'al-ṣanama' is the calamity.
أصلها صلمة
Its origin is 'ṣalama'.
