فأسلم، وفي رواية: حتى أسلم أي انقاد وكف عن وسوستي

so he submitted, and in another narration: until he submitted, meaning he yielded and ceased his whispering.

قالت الأعراب آمنا قل لم تؤمنوا ولكن قولوا أسلمنا

The Bedouins say, 'We have believed.' Say, 'You have not [truly] believed; but say, 'We have submitted,'

فإن هذا يحتاج الناس إلى تفهمه ليعلموا أين ينفصل المؤمن من المسلم وأين يستويان

for this requires people to understand it so they know where the believer is distinguished from the Muslim and where they are equal.

فإن كان مع ذلك الإظهار اعتقاد وتصديق بالقلب فذلك الإيمان الذي هذه صفته

If, along with that outward expression, there is conviction and belief in the heart, then that is faith, which has this description.

فإن ابن مسعود لم يكن أول من أسلم وإن كان من السابقين.

For Ibn Mas'ud was not the first to submit, even though he was among the early ones.

اللهم سلمني من رمضان وسلم رمضان لي وسلمه مني

O Allah, keep me safe from Ramadan, and make Ramadan safe for me, and make it safe from me.

وكان علي مسلما في شأنها أي سالما لم يبد بشيء منها

وأما السلام فيجوز أن يكون من التسليم، ويجوز أن يكون بمعنى السلم، وهو الاستسلام وإلقاء المقادة إلى إرادة المسلمين.

As for as-salam, it may be from at-taslim, and it may be in the meaning of as-silm, which is submission and casting off the reins to the will of the Muslims.

وأخذه سلما: أسره من غير حرب.

And taking him as a prisoner: capturing him without war.

وتسلمه مني: قبضه.

And tasallamahu from me: he received it.

والتسليم: السلام.

And at-taslim: greeting.

من تسلم في شيء فلا يصرفه إلى غيره.

He entrusted his affair to God, meaning he submitted.
