And Al-Asma'i rejected al-khadram in describing the sea, and it was said: the master of burdens, and the plural is khadārim and khadārimah, the 'ha' for feminine plural, and khadramūn, and it is not used to describe a woman.
والمتخضرم من الزبد: الذي يتفرق في البرد ولا يجتمع.
And al-mutakhidrim of butter: that which separates in the cold and does not gather.
وناقة مخضرمة: قطع طرف أذنها.
And a makhḍaramah she-camel: its earlobe was cut.
والخضرمة: قطع إحدى الأذنين، وهي سمة الجاهلية.
And al-khadramah: cutting one of the ears, and it is a mark of the Jahiliyyah.
وخضرم الأذن: قطع من طرفها شيئا وتركه ينوس، وقيل قطعها بنصفين، وقيل: المخضرمة من النوق والشاء المقطوعة نصف الأذن؛
And he khadram-ed the ear: he cut something from its tip and left it dangling, and it was said he cut it in half, and it was said: al-makhḍaramah from camels and sheep is one whose ear is cut in half;
وفي الحديث: خطبنا رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، يوم النحر على ناقة مخضرمة ،
And in the hadith: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, delivered a sermon on the Day of Sacrifice upon a makhḍaramah she-camel,
وكان أهل الجاهلية يخضرمون نعمهم، فلما جاء الإسلام أمرهم النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أن يخضرموا من غير الموضع الذي يخضرم منه أهل الجاهلية،
And the people of Jahiliyyah used to khadram their livestock, and when Islam came, the Prophet, peace be upon him, ordered them to khadram from a different place than where the people of Jahiliyyah used to khadram.
وأصل الخضرمة أن يجعل الشيء بين بين، فإذا قطع بعض الأذن فهي بين الوافرة والناقصة،
And the origin of al-khadramah is to make something intermediate, so if part of the ear is cut, it is between complete and incomplete,
وقيل: هي المنتوجة بين النجائب والعكاظيات، ومنه قيل لكل من أدرك الجاهلية والإسلام: مخضرم لأنه أدرك الخضرمتين.
And it was said: she is the offspring between the swift mares and the 'Akaziyyah mares, and from this it is said of everyone who lived through the Jahiliyyah and Islam: makhḍaram because he lived through the two khadramahs.
وامرأة مخضرمة: أخطأت خافضتها فأصابت غير موضع الخفض.
And a makhḍaramah woman: her circumciser missed the correct spot and hit another place.
وامرأة مخضرمة أي مخفوضة.
And a makhḍaramah woman means circumcised.
خضرم أهل الجاهلية نعمهم أي قطعوا من آذانها في غير الموضع الذي خضرم فيه أهل الجاهلية، فكانت خضرمة أهل الإسلام بائنة من خضرمة أهل الجاهلية.
The people of Jahiliyyah khadram-ed their livestock, meaning they cut from their ears in a place other than where the people of Jahiliyyah khadram-ed, so the khadramah of the people of Islam was distinct from the khadramah of the people of Jahiliyyah.
فقيل لهذا المعنى لكل من أدرك الجاهلية والإسلام: مخضرم، لأنه أدرك الخضرمتين: خضرمة الجاهلية وخضرمة الإسلام.
So for this meaning, it is said of everyone who lived through the Jahiliyyah and Islam: makhḍaram, because he lived through the two khadramahs: the khadramah of Jahiliyyah and the khadramah of Islam.
ورجل مخضرم: لم يختتن.
And a makhḍaram man: he is not circumcised.
ورجل مخضرم إذا كان نصف عمره في الجاهلية ونصفه في الإسلام.
And a makhḍaram man if half his life was in the Jahiliyyah and half in Islam.
وشاعر مخضرم: أدرك الجاهلية والإسلام مثل لبيد وغيره ممن أدركهما؛
And a makhḍaram poet: lived through the Jahiliyyah and Islam like Labid and others who lived through them;
قال ابن بري: أكثر أهل اللغة على أنه مخضرم، بكسر الراء، لأن الجاهلية لما دخلوا في الإسلام خضرموا آذان إبلهم ليكون علامة لإسلامهم إن أغير عليها أو حوربوا.
Ibn Barrī said: Most linguists agree that it is makhḍaram, with a kasra on the ra, because when the people of Jahiliyyah entered Islam, they khadram-ed the ears of their camels to be a sign of their Islam if they were raided or fought.
ويقال لمن أدرك الجاهلية والإسلام: مخضرم، وأما من قال مخضرم، بفتح الراء، فتأويله عنده أنه قطع عن الكفر إلى الإسلام.
And it is said of one who lived through the Jahiliyyah and Islam: makhḍaram, but as for one who says makhḍaram, with a fatha on the ra, its interpretation for him is that he was cut off from disbelief to Islam.
وقال ابن خالويه: خضرم خلط، ومنه المخضرم الذي أدرك الجاهلية والإسلام.
And Ibn Khālawayh said: khadram means to mix, and from it is al-makhḍaram who lived through the Jahiliyyah and Islam.
ورجل مخضرم: أبوه أبيض وهو أسود.
And a makhḍaram man: his father is white and he is black.
ورجل مخضرم: ناقص الحسب. وقيل: هو الذي ليس بكريم النسب.
And a makhḍaram man: of diminished lineage. And it was said: he is one whose lineage is not noble.
ورجل مخضرم النسب أي دعي، وقد يترك ذكر النسب فيقال: المخضرم الدعي، وقيل: المخضرم في نسبه المختلط من أطرافه، وقيل: هو الذي لا يعرف أبواه، وقيل: هو الذي ولدته السراري؛
And a man of makhḍaram lineage, meaning adopted, and the lineage may be omitted and it is said: al-makhḍaram the adopted one, and it was said: al-makhḍaram in his lineage is mixed from its parts, and it was said: he is one whose parents are unknown, and it was said: he is one born of concubines;
ولحم مخضرم، بفتح الراء: لا يدرى أمن ذكر هو أم من أنثى.
And makhḍaram meat, with a fatha on the ra: it is not known if it is from a male or a female.
وطام مخضرم: حكاه ابن الأعرابي ولم يفسره؛ قال ابن سيده: وعندي أنه الذي ليس بحلو ولا مر، وفي التهذيب: بين الثقيل والخفيف.
And a makhḍaram drink: narrated by Ibn al-A'rābī and he did not explain it; Ibn Sīdah said: and in my opinion it is that which is neither sweet nor bitter, and in Al-Tahdhīb: between heavy and light.
وماء مخضرم: غير عذب؛
And makhḍaram water: not fresh;
وعنه أيضا. وماء خضرم؛ عن يعقوب: بين الحلو والملح.
And from him also. And khadram water; from Ya'qūb: between sweet and salty.
والخضرم، مثال العلبط: فرخ الضب يكون حسلا ثم خضرما؛ قال ابن دريد: وهو حسل ثم مطبخ ثم خضرم ثم ضب، ولم يذكر الغيداق وذكره أبو زيد.
And al-khadram, like al-'albat: the young of a desert monitor lizard, it is hasal then khadram; Ibn Durayd said: it is hasal then matbakh then khadram then a desert monitor lizard, and he did not mention al-ghaydāq while Abu Zayd mentioned it.
والخضارمة: قوم بالشام، وذلك أن قوما من العجم خرجوا في أول الإسلام فتفرقوا في بلاد العرب، فمن أقام منهم بالبصرة فهم الأساورة، ومن أقام منهم بالكوفة فهو الأحامرة، ومن أقام منهم بالشام فهم الخضارمة، ومن أقام منهم بالجزيرة فهم الجراجمة، ومن أقام منهم باليمن فهم الأبناء، ومن أقام منهم بالموصل فهم بالموصل فهم الجرامقة، والله أعلم.
And al-Khadārimah: a people in Sham, and that is because a group of non-Arabs emerged in the early days of Islam and dispersed in the lands of the Arabs, so whoever settled among them in Basra are the Asāwirah, and whoever settled among them in Kufa are the Aḥāmirah, and whoever settled among them in Sham are the Khadārimah, and whoever settled among them in Al-Jazīrah are the Jarājimah, and whoever settled among them in Yemen are the Abnā', and whoever settled among them in Mosul are the Jarāmiqah, and Allah knows best.
