And perhaps I have witnessed fierce opponents, ... their chests boiling with the most vehement speech.

هذان خصمان اختصموا في ربهم ؛ قال الزجاج: عنى المؤمنين والكافرين، وكل واحد من الفريقين خصم؛
These two are adversaries who have disputed about their Lord; Al-Zajjaj said: He meant the believers and the disbelievers, and each of the two groups is an adversary;

بل هم قوم خصمون ، وقوله تعالى: يخصمون ، فيمن قرأ به، لا يخلو «1». من أحد أمرين:
Nay, they are a contentious people, and His saying, the Almighty: 'they dispute,' for whoever reads it, it is not devoid of one of two things:
خاصم المرء في تراث أبيه أي تعلق بشيء، فإن أصبته وإلا لم يضرك الكلام.
A person disputed concerning his father's inheritance, meaning he clung to something; if you obtained it, otherwise the talk would not harm you.
خاصمت فلانا فخصمته أخصمه، بالكسر، ولا يقال بالضم، وهو شاذ؛
I disputed with so-and-so and I defeated him, I defeat him, with kasra, and it is not said with damma, and it is irregular;
وأخصمت فلانا إذا لقنته حجته على خصمه.
And I prompted so-and-so with his argument against his opponent.
والخصم: الجانب، والجمع أخصام.

والخصم، بكسر الصاد: الشديد الخصومة؛

And the side of the waterskin: is the part opposite the opening at its rear, and its upper part is the strap, and the plural is akhsam, and it is said: the akhsam of the waterskin and its khuṣūm are its corners.
خصوم السحابة: جوانبها؛ قال الأخطل يصف سحابا: إذا طعنت فيه الجنوب تحاملت ... بأعجاز جرار، تداعى خصومها
The sides of the cloud: its flanks; Al-Akhtal said describing clouds: When the south winds struck it, they pushed ... the rear of heavy clouds, its sides calling out to each other
والأخصام: التي عند الكلية وهي من كل شيء؛ قال أبو محمد الحذلمي يصف الإبل: واهتجم العيدان من أخصامها
And the akhsam: are those near the shoulder blade, and they are from everything; Abu Muhammad Al-Hudhalimi said describing camels: And the ribs emerged from their sides.
والأخصوم: عروة الجوالق أو العدل.
And the akhsum: the handle of the saddlebag or the pack.
والخصم، بالضم: جانب العدل وزاويته؛ يقال للمتاع إذا وقع في جانب الوعاء من خرج أو جوالق أو عيبة: قد وقع في خصم الوعاء، وفي زاوية الوعاء؛
And al-khaṣm, with damma: the side of the pack and its corner; It is said for goods if they fall into the side of the container, whether it is a saddlebag or a chest: it has fallen into the khaṣm of the container, and into the corner of the container;
خصم كل شيء: طرفه من المزادة والفراش وغيرهما، وأما عصم الروايا فهي الحبال التي تثبت في عراها ويشد بها على ظهر البعير، واحدها عصام.
The edge of everything: its end from the waterskin, mattress, and others, and as for the straps of the waterskins, they are the ropes that are fixed to their loops and are tied onto the camel's back, the singular of which is 'iṣām.
وأعصمت المزادة إذا شددتها بالعصامين؛ وأنشد ابن بري شاهدا على خصم كل شيء جانبه وناحيته للطرماح: تزجي عكاك الصيف أخصامها العلا، ... وما نزلت حول المقر على عمد أخصامها: فرجها.
And I strapped the waterskin if I tied it with the two straps; And Ibn Bree recited as evidence for the edge of everything being its side and its flank, from Al-Tirammah: Driving the summer heat, its sides are high, ... and it did not descend around the resting place intentionally. وفي الحديث: قالت له أم سلمة أراك ساهم الوجه أمن علة؟ قال: لا ولكن السبعة الدنانير التي أتينا بها أمس نسيتها في خصم الفراش فبت ولم أقسمها ؛ خصم الفراش: طرفه وجانبه.
And in the hadith: Umm Salamah said to him, 'I see you with a pale face, is it from illness?' He said, 'No, but the seven dinars that we brought yesterday, I forgot them in the side of the mattress, so I spent the night without distributing them'; The side of the mattress: its end and its side.
والخصمة: من خرز الرجال يلبسونها إذا أرادوا أن ينازعوا قوما أو يدخلوا على سلطان، قربما كانت تحت فص الرجل إذا كانت صغيرة، وتكون في زره، وربما جعلوها في ذؤابة السيف.
And the khusmah: is from the beads that men wear when they intend to dispute with people or enter upon a ruler, it might be under the man's ring if it was small, and it is in his button, and sometimes they make it on the tip of the sword.
وخصمت فلانا: غلبته فيما خاصمته.

وفي حديث سهل بن حنيف يوم صفين لما حكم الحكمان: هذا أمر لا يسد منه خصم إلا انفتح علينا منه خصم ؛ أراد الإخبار عن انتشار الأمر وشدته وأنه لا يتهيأ إصلاحه وتلافيه، لأنه بخلاف ما كانوا عليه من الإتفاق.
And in the hadith of Sahl bin Hunaif on the day of Siffin when the two arbitrators ruled: This is a matter from which no opponent can be blocked except that another opponent opens up to us; He intended to inform about the spread and severity of the matter and that it cannot be rectified and remedied, because it is contrary to what they were upon of agreement.
وأخصام العين: ما ضمت عليه الأشفار.
