Al-Jahnam: The distant depth.
And the well of Jahnam and Juhannam, with kasra on the Jim and Ha: is distant in its depth.
And Hell was named so because of its distant depth.
And Al-Laythiyani said: Jahnam is a foreign name.
And Juhannam is the name of a man.
And Juhannam is the nickname of Amr ibn Qatn from Banu Sa'd ibn Qays ibn Tha'labah.
And he used to engage in poetic duels with Al-A'sha.
And it is said he is the name of her follower.
And they called out for him... Jahnam, may God disfigure the blameworthy bastard.
And leaving Jahnam undeclined indicates that it is foreign.
And it is said he is the brother of Hurayrah, whom he woos in his poetry: 'And leave Hurayrah'.
Jahannam is among the names of the Fire with which God punishes His servants.
And it is assimilated to the pentasyllabic, with the third letter thereof being doubled.
And it is not declined for definiteness and femininity.
And it is said: it is a Persian loanword.
Jahannam is the name of the Fire with which God punishes in the Hereafter.
And it is foreign and is not declined for definiteness and foreignness.
And others said: Jahannam is Arabic, and the Fire of the Hereafter was named so because of its distant depth.
And it is not declined only because of the weight of definiteness and the weight of femininity.
And it is said: it is the Arabicization of 'Kehanam' in Hebrew.
He who considers Jahannam Arabic argues from their saying 'a well of Jahnam'.
And its non-declension is due to femininity and definiteness.
And he who considers Jahannam a foreign name argues from Al-A'sha's saying: 'And they called out for Jahannam, and it was not declined'.
So Jahannam, according to this, would not be declined for definiteness, foreignness, and also femininity.
And he who considers Jahnam the name of the follower of the poet rivaling Al-A'sha, it is not an argument for him, because its non-declension would be due to femininity and definiteness, not foreignness.
That Jahannam is a foreign name.
And its non-declension in Al-A'sha's verse strengthens this.
A well of Jahnam for the distant depth.
And from this, Jahannam was named.
And this indicates that it is Arabic.
