ثم إذا حشي، وثم إذا أصلح.
Then when it is stuffed, and then when it is repaired.
ثم يثم، بالضم، ثما أصلح.
Then it is repaired, with damma, meaning it was set right.
ومن قيل: ثممت أموري إذا أصلحتها ورممتها.
And from this is said: 'I repaired my affairs if I set them right and mended them.'
كنا أهل ثمه ورمه حتى استوى على عممه وعممه
We were people of its mending and repair until he became established in his turbans and his authority.
والثم: إصلاح الشيء وإحكامه، وهو والرم بمعنى الإصلاح
And 'al-thamm' is the repairing of a thing and making it firm; it and 'al-wamm' mean repair.
فقال: أراد أنهم شدوها وأحكموها، قال: والنواشج الممتلئة
He said: He meant that they tightened them and made them firm; he said: And 'al-nawashij' are the full ones.
يعني بقوله ثموا الأوطب النواشج أي فرشوا لها الثمام وظللوها به
He means by his saying 'thammū al-awtāb al-nawāshij' that they spread 'thamam' grass for them and shaded them with it.
ثممت السقاء إذا فرشت له الثمام وجعلته فوقه لئلا تصيبه الشمس فيتقطع لبنه.
I repaired the waterskin if I spread 'thamam' grass for it and placed it on top so that the sun would not hit it and spoil its milk.
والثمام: نبت معروف في البادية ولا تجهده النعم إلا في الجدوبة
And 'al-thamam' is a known plant in the desert, and livestock do not exert themselves over it except in times of drought.
ورجل معم مثم ملم للذي يصلح الأمر ويقوم به.
And a man who is 'mu'amm, muthimm, mulimm' is one who sets matters right and takes charge of them.
والمثم الذي يرعى على من لا راعي له، ويفقر من لا ظهر له، ويثم ما عجز عنه الحي من أمرهم
And 'al-muthimm' is one who grazes what has no shepherd, and enriches those who have no support, and he mends what the tribe is incapable of handling of their affairs.
وإذا كان الرجل شديدا يأتي من وراء الصاغية ويحمل الزيادة ويرد الركاب قيل له: مثم، وإنه لمثم لأسافل الأشياء.
And if a man is strong, comes from behind the weak, carries the extra burden, and brings back the riders, he is called 'muthimm', and indeed he is 'muthimm' for the lowest of things.
ومثم الفرس، بالفتح: منقطع سرته، والمثمة مثله.
And 'mathm' of a horse, with fatha, is the base of its navel, and 'al-mathmah' is similar.
ثم الشيء يثمه ثما: جمعه، وأكثر ما يستعمل في الحشيش.
And 'thamma' a thing, 'yathimmuhu thamma': he gathered it, and it is most often used for herbs.
ويقال: هو يثمه ويقمه أي يكنسه ويجمع الجيد والرديء.
And it is said: 'He gathers it and collects it,' meaning he sweeps it and gathers the good and the bad.
جعجع بي الدهر عن ثمه ورمه أي عن قليله وكثيره.
Time tossed me about, from its little and its much, meaning from its small amount and its large amount.
والثمة، بالضم: القبضة من الحشيش.
And 'al-thummah', with damma, is a handful of herbs.
ثم يده بالحشيش أو الأرض: مسحها، وثممت يدي كذلك.
Then his hand with the herbs or the ground: he wiped it, and I wiped my hand likewise.
وانثم عليه أي انثال عليه.
And 'anthamma' upon him means 'anthala' (poured down) upon him.
وانثم جسم فلان أي ذاب مثل انهم؛ عن ابن السكيت.
And 'anthamma' so-and-so's body means it melted, like 'inhamma'; from Ibn al-Sikkit.
والثم لغة في الثمام، الواحدة ثمة؛ قال الشاعر: فأصبح فيه آل خيم منضد، ... وثم على عرش الخيام غسيل
And 'al-thamm' is a dialectal variant of 'al-thamam', the singular is 'thammah'; a poet said: So in it was a well-arranged tent, ... and 'thamm' on the throne of the tents was a washing.
وقالوا في المثل لنجاح الحاجة: هو على رأس الثمة؛
And they said in the proverb for the success of a need: 'It is at the head of the 'thummah' (clump of grass).
أمسحها بتربة أو ثمه
I wipe it with soil or 'thammah'.
وثمت الشاة الشيء والنبات بفيها تثمه ثما، وهي ثموم: قلعته بفيها، وكل ما مرت به، وهي شاة ثموم.
And the sheep plucked a thing and a plant with its mouth, 'tathimmuhu thamma', and it is 'thumoom': it plucked it with its mouth, and whatever it passed by, and it is a 'thumoom' sheep.
والعرب تقول للشيء الذي لا يعسر تناوله: هو على طرف الثمام، وذلك أن الثمام لا يطول فيشق تناوله.
And the Arabs say of something that is not difficult to reach: 'It is at the edge of the 'thamam' grass,' because 'thamam' does not grow tall, making it difficult to reach.
تقول العرب في التشبيه هو أبوه على طرف الثمة إذا كان يشبهه، وبعضهم يقول الثمة، مفتوحة.
The Arabs say in comparison: 'He is his father at the edge of the 'thummah' if he resembles him,' and some say 'al-thummah', with fatha.
والثمة الثمام إذا نزع فجعل تحت الأساقي.
And 'al-thummah' is 'al-thamam' when it is pulled out and placed under the water skins.
يقال: ثممت السقاء أثمه إذا جعلت تحته الثمة، ويقال: ثم لها أي اجمع لها.
It is said: 'I repaired the waterskin, 'athimuhu', if you placed 'al-thummah' beneath it, and it is said: 'thamm lahā' meaning gather for it.
وثم الشيء يثمه وثممه: وطئه، والاسم الثم، وكذلك ثم الوطأة.
And 'thamma' a thing, 'yathimuhu' and 'yuthammimuhu': he trod upon it, and the noun is 'al-thamm', and likewise 'thamm al-wat'ah' (the treading).
وانثم الشيخ انثماما: ولى وكبر وهرم.
And the old man 'anthamma' (grew old) 'inthimāman': he passed away, grew old, and became decrepit.
وثم الطعام ثما: أكل جيده.
And 'thamma' the food, 'thamma': he ate its best part.
وما له ثم ولا رم: فالثم قماش الناس أساقيهم وآنيتهم، والرم مرمة البيت.
And he has neither 'thamm' nor 'ramm': 'al-thamm' refers to people's belongings, their waterskins and vessels, and 'al-ramm' is the mending of a house.
وما يملك ثما ولا رما أي قليلا ولا كثيرا، لا يستعمل إلا في النفي.
And he owns neither 'thamm' nor 'ramm', meaning little or much; it is only used in negation.
ثممت حوائجي ووذأت عمرا، فبئس معرس الركب السغاب
I mended my needs and delayed Amr, so what a bad resting place for the thirsty travelers.
والثمام: شجر، واحدته ثمامة وثمة؛ عن كراع؛ قال ابن سيده: لا أدري كيف ذلك، وبه فسر قولهم: هو لك على رأس الثمة، وبها سمي الرجل ثمامة.
And 'al-thamam' is a tree, its singular is 'thamamah' and 'thammah'; from Kura', Ibn al-Sida said: I do not know how that is, and by it they explained their saying: 'It is for you at the head of the 'thummah',' and by it a man was named 'Thamāmah'.
والثمام: نبت ضعيف له خوص أو شبيه بالخوص، وربما حشي به وسد به خصاص البيوت؛ قال الشاعر يصف ضعيف الثمام: ولو أن ما أبقيت مني معلق ... بعود ثمام، ما تأود عودها
And 'al-thamam' is a weak plant with fronds or something similar to fronds, and it is sometimes stuffed and used to seal the gaps in houses; a poet said describing the weak 'thamam': And if what remains of me were hanging ... on a stalk of 'thamam', its stalk would not bend.
اغزوا والغزو حلو خضر قبل أن يصير ثماما ثم رماما ثم حطاما
Go forth to war, and war is sweet and green before it becomes 'thamam' (weak), then 'ramam' (decayed), then 'huttam' (broken).
والثمام: ما يبس من الأغصان التي توضع تحت النضد.
And 'al-thamam' is what has dried from the branches that are placed under the bedding.
وبيت مثموم: مغطى بالثمام، وكذلك الوطب، وهو على طرف الثمام أي ممكن لا محال؛ عن ابن الأعرابي.
And a 'muthammum' house is covered with 'thamam' grass, as is the waterskin; and it is 'on the edge of the 'thamam'' meaning it is possible, no doubt; from Ibn al-A'rabi.
وشاة ثموم: تأكل الثمام، وقد قلنا إنها التي تقلع الشيء بفيها.
And a 'thumoom' sheep eats 'thamam' grass, and we have already said it is one that plucks things with its mouth.
ثممت العظم تثميما، وذلك إذا كان عنتا فأبنته.
I repaired the bone 'tathmeeman', and that is if it was difficult and you made it clear.
والثميمة: التامورة المشدودة الرأس، وهي الثفال وهي الإبريق.
And 'al-thameemah' is the tightly-bound head of a waterskin, it is 'al-thafal' and it is the ewer.
وإذا رأيت ثم رأيت نعيما
And when you see, then you see bliss.
فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله
So wherever you turn, there is the face of Allah.
فعلت كذا وكذا ثمت فعلت كذا
I did such and such, then I did such and such.
ولقد أمر على اللئيم يسبني، ... فمضيت ثمت قلت: لا يعنيني
And I pass by the ignoble man who insults me, ... so I moved on, then I said: It does not concern me.
ثمت ينباع انبياع الشجاع
Then he flows forth like the flowing of a brave man.
خلقكم من نفس واحدة ثم جعل منها زوجها
He created you from one soul, then He made from it its mate.
المعنى خلقكم من نفس خلقها واحدة ثم جعل منها زوجها أي خلق منها زوجها قبلكم
The meaning is: He created you from a soul He created as one, then He made from it its mate, meaning He created its mate from it before you.
ثم لا تكون في العطوف إلا لشيء بعد شيء
And 'thumma' is not used in connection except for something after something.
وإنما منعت ثم الإعراب لإبهامها، قال: ولا أعلم أحدا شرح ثم هذا الشرح، وأما هنا فهو إشارة إلى القريب منك.
And 'thamma' was prevented from inflection due to its ambiguity, he said: And I do not know anyone who explained 'thamma' with this explanation, but here it is an indication to what is near you.
ثم: بمعنى هناك وهو للتبعيد بمنزلة هنا للتقريب.
'Thamma': meaning 'there', and it is for indicating distance, like 'hunā' for indicating proximity.
وهو المكان البعيد منك، ومنعت الإعراب لإبهامها وبقيت على الفتح لالتقاء الساكنين.
And it is the place distant from you, and it was prevented from inflection due to its ambiguity and remained with fatha due to the meeting of two silent letters.
