Ibn al-Sikkit said: Ayyūb and Masḥal, sons of Rabdā', daughter of Jarīr, said: Jarīr used to name his two odes, in which he praised 'Abd al-'Azīz ibn Marwān and satirized poets, and one of them was: 'The companions departed for estrangement and distance, ... and indeed I forgot two pearl-like ornaments for my solace,' and the other: 'O my two companions, the evening approaches, so travel.' They said: He used to call them the two 'tūmatayn'.

Abū Manṣūr said: Whoever calls a pearl a 'tūmah' likens it to something made of silver like a round pearl that a young girl places in her ears, and whoever says 'tu'āmiyyah' means two pearls for the ears, one matching the other.
