ومنهم أميون لا يعلمون الكتاب إلا أماني ؛

And among them are the unlettered who do not know the Book except by hearsay;

إنا أمة أمية لا نكتب ولا نحسب ؛

We are an unlettered nation; we do not write and we do not calculate;

بعثت إلى أمة أمية ؛

I was sent to an unlettered nation;

والأمي: العيي الجلف الجافي القليل الكلام؛

And the ummi: the inarticulate, coarse, rough, and taciturn;

وقيل لسيدنا محمد رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، الأمي لأن أمة العرب لم تكن تكتب ولا تقرأ المكتوب،

And our master Muhammad, peace be upon him, was called the Ummi because the Arab nation did not write nor read what was written,

وما كنت تتلوا من قبله من كتاب ولا تخطه بيمينك إذا لارتاب المبطلون

And you did not recite any book before it, nor did you write it with your right hand; in that case, the falsifiers would have doubted.

والأمام: نقيض الوراء وهو في معنى قدام،

And 'amam: the opposite of 'wara', and it is in the meaning of 'qaddam' (in front),

وتقول أنت أمامه أي قدامه.

And you say 'anta amamahu' meaning 'he is in front of him'.

قالت أميمة: ما لجسمك شاحبا

Umaymah said: What is wrong with your body being pale

تبين رويدا ما أمامة من هند

وأما: من حروف الابتداء ومعناها الإخبار.

فوالله ما أدري أسلمى تغولت، أم النوم أم كل إلي حبيب

By God, I do not know if it was Salma who appeared, or sleep, or if all beloved ones have come to me.

أزيد أحسن أم عمرو،

Is Zayd better or Amr?

أم عندك غداء حاضر؟

Or do you have lunch ready?

يا دهن أم ما كان مشيي رقصا،

O Dahna, or was my walking a dance,

ليس من امبر امصيام في امسفر

It is not from righteousness that fasting is done while traveling.

يرمي ورائي بامسيف وامسلمه

He throws behind me with the sword and the spear.

أزيد في الدار أم عمرو

Is Zayd in the house or Amr?

إنها لإبل أم شاء يا فتى،

It is indeed camels, or sheep, O young man,

كذبتك عينك أم رأيت بواسط

Your eye has lied to you, or did you see in Wasit

أم اتخذ مما يخلق بنات

Or has He taken daughters from what He creates?

أم هل عندك عمرو

Or is Amr with you?

أم هل كبير بكى لم يقض عبرته،

Or has a grown man wept without shedding his tears,
