He said: It is not appropriate to say 'Wayl' is a supplication here because it is ugly in pronunciation, but the Arabs were addressed in their language, and the Quran came according to their language according to their understanding, so it was as if it was said to them: 'Wayl lil-mukadhdhibin', meaning these are among those to whom this statement is due.

الْوَيْلُ قَبُوحٌ، وَالْوَيْحُ تَرَحُّمٌ، وَالْوَيْسُ تَصْغِيرُهُمَا أَيْ هِيَ دُونَهُنَّ

Al-Wayl is a condemnation, and Al-Wayh is expressing pity, and Al-Ways is their diminutive, meaning it is less than them.

الْوَيْلُ هَلَكَةٌ، وَالْوَيْحُ قَبُوحٌ، وَالْوَيْسُ تَرَحُّمٌ

وَيُقَالُ: وَيْلًا لَهُ وَائِلًا، كَقَوْلِكَ شُغْلًا شَاغِلًا

And it is said: 'Waylan lahu wa'ilan', like your saying 'Shughlan shaghilan'.

وَإِذَا قَالَ الْإِنْسَانُ يَا وَيْلَاهُ قُلْتَ قَدْ تَوَيَّلَ

And if a person says, 'Ya waylah' (Oh, woe is me), you say, 'He has uttered 'tawayala' (woe).

وَإِذَا قَالَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ: وَا وَيْلَتَهَا، قُلْتَ وَلْوَلَتْ لِأَنَّ ذَلِكَ يَتَحَوَّلُ إِلَى حِكَايَاتِ الصَّوْتِ

And if a woman says: 'Wa waylataha' (Oh, her woe), you say, 'She has wailed', because that turns into a narration of the sound.

قَوْلُهُمْ وَيْلَهُ كَانَ أَصْلُهَا وَيْ وَصَلَتْ بِلَهَ، وَمَعْنَى وَيْ حُزْنٌ

وَقِيلَ الْوَيْلُ شِدَّةٌ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ
