تقول العرب أول ما أطلع ضب ذنبه
The Arabs say, 'the first time a lizard showed its tail'
يقال ذلك للرجل يصنع الخير ولم يكن صنعه قبل ذلك
This is said of a man who does good, having not done it before.
والعرب ترفع أول وتنصب ذنبه على معنى أول ما أطلع ذنبه
And the Arabs raise 'awwal' and put 'dhanabahu' in the accusative, meaning the first time its tail was shown.
ومنهم من يرفع أول ويرفع ذنبه على معنى أول شيء أطلعه ذنبه
And some of them raise 'awwal' and raise 'dhanabahu', meaning the first thing its tail showed.
ومنهم من ينصب أول وينصب ذنبه على أن يجعل أول صفة
And some of them put 'awwal' in the accusative and 'dhanabahu' in the accusative, by making 'awwal' an adjective.
ومنهم من ينصب أول ويرفع ذنبه على معنى في أول ما أطلع ضب ذنبه أي ذنبه في أول ذلك
And some of them put 'awwal' in the accusative and raise 'dhanabahu', meaning 'at the first time the lizard showed its tail', i.e., its tail at the beginning of that.
إن أول بيت وضع للناس للذي ببكة
Indeed, the first house appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah
أول في اللغة على الحقيقة ابتداء الشيء
'Awwal' in the language, in reality, is the beginning of a thing.
وجائز أن يكون المبتدأ له آخر، وجائز أن لا يكون له آخر
And it is possible that the beginning has an end, and it is possible that it does not have an end.
فالواحد أول العدد والعدد غير متناه
So, one is the first of the number, and the number is infinite.
ونعيم الجنة له أول وهو غير منقطع
And the bliss of Paradise has a beginning, and it is not cut off.
وقولك: هذا أول مال كسبته جائز أن لا يكون بعده كسب
And your saying: 'This is the first wealth I earned' allows for there to be no earning after it.
ولكن أراد بل هذا ابتداء كسبي
But he meant: 'Rather, this is the beginning of my earning'.
فلو قال قائل أول عبد أملكه حر فملك عبدا لعتق ذلك العبد
And if someone said: 'The first slave I own is free', and he owned a slave, that slave would be freed.
لأنه قد ابتدأ الملك فجائز أن يكون قول الله تعالى إن أول بيت وضع للناس هو البيت الذي لم يكن الحج إلى غيره
Because the ownership has begun, and it is possible that God's saying 'Indeed, the first house appointed for mankind' refers to the House to which pilgrimage was not made to any other.
ولم يبين أصل أول واشتقاقه من اللغة
And he did not explain the origin of 'awwal' and its derivation from the language.
وقيل تفسير الأول في صفة الله عز وجل أنه الأول ليس قبله شيء والآخر ليس بعده شيء
And it was said: The explanation of 'Al-Awwal' in the description of God Almighty is that He is the First, before Whom nothing exists, and the Last, after Whom nothing exists.
وجاء هذا في الخبر عن سيدنا رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، فلا يجوز أن نعدو في تفسير هذين الاسمين ما روي عنه، صلى الله عليه وسلم
And this came in the narration from our master, the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, so it is not permissible to deviate in the interpretation of these two names from what is narrated from him, peace be upon him.
وأقرب ما يحضرني في اشتقاق الأول أنه أفعل من آل يؤول، وأولى فعلى منه
And the closest thing that comes to my mind regarding the derivation of 'awwal' is that it is 'af'al' from 'aala ya'oolu', and 'awla' is 'af'ala' from it.
وكان أول في الأصل أأول فقلبت الهمزة الثانية واوا وأدغمت في الواو الأخرى فقيل أول
And 'awwal' was originally 'a'awwal', so the second hamza was changed to a waw and assimilated into the other waw, and it was said 'awwal'.
وأراه قول سيبويه، وكأنه من قولهم آل يؤول إذا نجا وسبق
And I think it is the saying of Sibawayh, and it is as if it is from their saying 'aala ya'oolu' when one escapes and precedes.
ومثله وأل يئل بمعناه
And similar to it is 'wa'ala ya'ilu' with its meaning.
وأما قولهم ابدأ بهذا أول، فإنما يريدون أول من كذا ولكنه حذف لكثرته في كلامهم
And as for their saying 'Start with this first', they mean 'first of such and such', but it is omitted due to its frequency in their speech.
وبني على الحركة لأنه من المتمكن الذي جعل في موضع بمنزلة غير المتمكن
And it was constructed with a vowel because it is from the 'mutamakkin' (fully inflected noun) which was placed in a position like that of a non-inflected noun.
وقالوا ادخلوا الأول فالأول، وهي من المعارف الموضوعة موضع الحال، وهو شاذ
And they said: 'Enter the first, then the first', and it is one of the definite nouns placed in the position of a circumstantial adverb, which is irregular.
والرفع جائز على المعنى أي ليدخل الأول فالأول
And raising it is permissible according to the meaning, i.e., 'so that the first and then the first may enter'.
ما ترك له أولا ولا آخرا
He left him neither first nor last.
جعله اسما فنكر وصرف
He made it a noun, indefinite, and diptote.
