والتهويل: شيء كان يفعل في الجاهلية، كانوا إذا أرادوا أن يستحلفوا الرجل أوقدوا نارا وألقوا فيها ملحا

And 'al-tahweel' is something that was done in the pre-Islamic era; when they wanted to make a man swear an oath, they would light a fire and throw salt into it.

والمهول: المحلف، وكان في الجاهلية لكل قوم نار وعليها سدنة، فكان إذا وقع بين الرجلين خصومة جاءا إلى النار فيحلف عندها

And 'al-mahool' is the one being sworn, and in the pre-Islamic era, every people had a fire with keepers; so if a dispute occurred between two men, they would come to the fire and swear an oath there.

وكان السدنة يطرحون فيها ملحا من حيث لا يشعر يهولون بها عليه، واسم تلك النار الهولة، بالضم

And the keepers would throw salt into it without him noticing, terrifying him with it, and the name of that fire was 'al-hawlah', with dammah.

كانت الهولة نارا يوقدونها عند الحلف ويلقون فيها ملحا فيتفقع، يهولون بها، وكذلك إذا استحلفوا رجلا

'Al-hawlah' was a fire they would light for an oath and throw salt into it, making it crackle, terrifying them with it, and likewise when they made a man swear an oath.

إذا استقبلته الشمس صد بوجهه، كما صد عن نار المهول حالف

When the sun faced him, he turned his face away, just as an oath-taker turns away from the fire of the one being sworn.

وهيل السكران يهال إذا رأى تهاويل في سكره فيفزع لها

And the drunkard sees illusions ('yuhal') when he sees 'tahaweel' in his drunkenness and becomes frightened by them.

حتى يهالا

Until he becomes terrified.

ورجل هولول: خفيف؛ حكاه ابن الأعرابي، وهو فعلعل؛ وأنشد: هولول إذا ونى القوم نزل والمعروف حولول

And a 'hawlool' man is light; Ibn al-A'rabi narrated it, and it is on the pattern 'fa'lal'; and he recited: 'Hawlool' when people falter, he descends. And the known is 'hawlool'.

والهال: فوه من أفواه الطيب

And 'al-haal' is its mouth from the mouths of perfume.

And 'al-halah' is the halo of the moon.

And 'Halah' is the sun, definite.
