أنهلت الإبل وهو أول سقيها
You say: 'I gave the camels their first drink,' and it is their first watering.
ونهلت هي إذا شربت في أول الورد
And she drank when she drank at the first watering.
وإبل نواهل ونهال ونهل ونهول ونهلة ونهلى
And thirsty camels, and thirsty camels, and thirsty camels, and thirst, and a drink, and thirsty camels.
يقال: إبل نهلى وعلى للتي تشرب النهل والعلل
It is said: 'Nehla camels,' and 'Ala' for those that drink the first drink and the second drink.
والنهل: الري والعطش، ضد
And 'Nahl': satiation and thirst, an antonym.
والمنهل: المشرب ثم كثر ذلك حتى سميت منازل السفار على المياه مناهل
And 'Manhal': the place of drinking, then this became common until the stopping places of travelers by water were named 'manahil'.
وفي حديث الدجال أنه يرد كل منهل
And in the Hadith of the Dajjal, it is said that he will reach every stopping place.
والمنهل: الشرب، قال: وهذا الأخير يتجه أن يكون مصدر نهل
And 'Manhal': the drinking, he said: and this latter meaning is plausible to be the masdar of 'nahala'.
والناهلة: المختلفة إلى المنهل، وكذلك النازلة
And 'Nahila': one who goes back and forth to the watering place, and likewise one who descends.
وأنشد: ولم تراقب هناك ناهلة ... الواشين، لما اجرهد ناهلها
And he recited: 'And she did not watch there a female frequenting... the calumniators, when her thirsty one became parched.'
والمنازل والمناهل واحد، وهي المنازل على الماء
'Al-Manazil' and 'Al-Manahil' are the same, and they are dwellings by the water.
وأنهل القوم: نهلت إبلهم
And 'Anhala al-qawm': their camels drank for the first time.
ورجل منهال: كثير الإنهال
And a man 'Minhal': one who gives to drink frequently.
والمنهل من المياه: كل ما يطؤه الطريق
And 'Manhal' of waters: everything that the road treads upon.
وفي قصيد كعب بن زهير: كأنه منهل بالراح معلول
And in the poem of Ka'b bin Zuhayr: 'As if it were a watering place watered with wine.'
وفي حديث معاوية: النهل الشروع ؛ هو جمع ناهل وشارع
And in the Hadith of Mu'awiyah: 'Al-Nahl' is to embark; it is the plural of 'nahil' and 'shari''.
ويقال: من أين نهلت اليوم؟ فتقول: بماء بني فلان وبمنهل بني فلان
And it is said: 'From where did you drink today?' So you say: 'From the water of Banu Fulani and from the watering place of Banu Fulani.'
ما زال منها ناهل ونائب
'There was among them one who drank and one who returned.'
والناهل: العطشان، والناهل الريان، وهو من الأضداد
And 'Al-Nahil': the thirsty, and 'Al-Nahil': the quenched, and it is one of the antonyms.
الطاعن الطعنة، يوم الوغى، ... ينهل منها الأسل الناهل
'Striking the blow, on the day of battle,... the thirsty spearhead drinks from it.'
وهو هاهنا الشارب وإن شئت العطشان أي يروى منه العطشان
And it is here the drinker, and if you wish the thirsty, meaning the thirsty is quenched from it.
وهو قوله: وأخوهما السفاح ظمأ خيله، ... حتى وردن جبا الكلاب نهالا
And his saying: 'And their brother Al-Saffah made his horses thirsty, ... until they arrived at the wells of Al-Kilab as thirsty ones.'
فما ذقت طعم النوم، حتى رأيتني ... أعارضهم ورد الخماس النواهل
'So I did not taste the flavor of sleep, until I saw myself... confronting them at the watering of the Al-Khams Al-Nawāhil.'
والنازل: الذي ينوب عودا بعد شربها لأنها لم تنضح ريا
And 'Al-Nā'ib': the one who returns after drinking because they were not fully quenched.
وتسمى المنازل التي في المفاوز على طريق السفار مناهل لأن فيها ماء
And the stopping places in the deserts on the travelers' route are called 'manahil' because there is water in them.
والأنثى ناهلة، والناهل العطشان، والناهل الريان، وهو من الأضداد
And the female is 'nahila', and 'al-nahil' is the thirsty, and 'al-nahil' is the quenched, and it is from the antonyms.
لا يظمأ والله ناهله ؛ يقول: من روي منه لم يعطش بعد ذلك أبدا
'Will not be thirsty, by God, its drinker'; meaning: whoever is quenched from it will never be thirsty again.
جمع الناهل نهل مثل طالب وطلب، وجمع النهل نهال مثل جبل وجبال
The plural of 'nahil' is 'nahal' like 'talib' and 'talab', and the plural of 'nahal' is 'nihal' like 'jabal' and 'jibāl'.
إنك لن تثأثئ النهالا، ... بمثل أن تدارك السجالا
'You will not deter the thirsty ones, ... by such as catching up with the abundant waters.'
يذود الأوابد فيها السموم، ... ذياد المحر المخاض النهالا
'He drives away the wild animals in them are the poisons, ... driving the thirsty, pregnant camels.'
منه تروي الأسل النواهلا
'From it, the thirsty spearheads are quenched.'
وقد نهل، بالكسر، وأنهلته أنا لأن الإبل تسقى في أول الورد فترد إلى العطن، ثم تسقى الثانية وهي العلل فترد إلى المرعى
And he drank, with kasra, and I gave him to drink, because the camels are watered at the first watering and return to the resting place, then they are watered a second time, which is the 'ilal', and they return to the pasture.
وقد نهلت منا الرماح وعلت
'And the spears have drunk from us and have been raised.'
أعللا ونحن منهلونه
'With second drinks, and we are those who give them to drink.'
إذا أورد إبله الماء فالسقية الأولى النهل، والثانية العلل
If he brings his camels to water, the first drink is 'al-nahal', and the second is 'al-'ilal'.
ثم انثنى من بعد ذا، فصلى ... على النبي نهلا وعلا
'Then he turned back after that, and prayed... upon the Prophet, with a drink and a second drink.'
وأنهل الرجل: أغضبه
And 'Anhala al-rajul': he angered the man.
لقد كفن المنهال، تحت ردائه، ... فتى غير مبطان العشية أروعا
'Indeed, Al-Minhal was shrouded, beneath his cloak, ... a young man, not gluttonous, in the evening, magnificent.'
