And it was said: He intended by 'al-kahil' here the forbearing, the sensible, meaning that Allah will enter the people of Paradise into Paradise as forbearing and sensible.

And he will speak to people in the cradle and as a mature man.

قال الفراء: أراد ومكلما الناس في المهد وكهلا

Al-Farra' said: He meant and speaking to people in the cradle and as a mature man.

روى المنذري عن أحمد بن يحيى أنه قال: ذكر الله عز وجل لعيسى آيتين: تكليمه الناس في المهد فهذه معجزة، والأخرى نزوله إلى الأرض عند اقتراب الساعة كهلا ابن ثلاثين سنة يكلم أمة محمد فهذه الآية الثانية.

Al-Mundhiri narrated from Ahmad bin Yahya that he said: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, mentioned two signs for Jesus: his speaking to people in the cradle, and this is a miracle, and the other is his descent to Earth near the Hour as a mature man, thirty years old, speaking to the nation of Muhammad, and this is the second sign.

وإذا بلغ الخمسين فإنه يقال له كهل

And when he reaches fifty, he is called a 'kahil'.

يقال للغلام مراهق ثم محتلم، ثم يقال تخرج وجهه ثم اتصلت لحيته، ثم مجتمع ثم كهل، وهو ابن ثلاث وثلاثين سنة

The boy is called a 'muraahiq' then 'muhtalim', then it is said his face sprouts, then his beard connects, then 'muj'tami', then 'kahil', and he is thirty-three years old.

وقيل له كهل حينئد لانتهاء شبابه وكمال قوته

And he was called a 'kahil' at that time due to the end of his youth and the completion of his strength.

والجمع كهلون وكهول وكهال وكهلان

And the plural is 'kahiloon', 'kuhool', 'kahaal', and 'kahlaan'.

وكيف ترجيها، وقد حال دونها بنو أسد، كهلانها وشبابها؟

And how do you hope for it, when the sons of Asad have stood between it, their mature men and their youth?

والأنثى كهلة من نسوة كهلات

And the female is a 'kahla' from women who are 'kahlaat'.

وهو القياس لأنه صفة

قلما يقال للمرأة كهلة مفردة حتى يزوجوها بشهلة، يقولون شهلة كهلة

Rarely is a woman called a singular 'kahla' until they pair her with a 'shahla', they say 'shahla kahla'.

رجل كهل وامرأة كهلة إذا انتهى شبابهما، وذلك عند استكمالهما ثلاثا وثلاثين سنة

A man is 'kahil' and a woman is 'kahla' when their youth has ended, and that is when they complete thirty-three years.

وقد يقال امرأة كهلة ولم يذكر معها شهلة

And a woman may be called 'kahla' without mentioning 'shahla' with her.

أمارس الكهلة والصبيا

هل في أهلك من كاهل؟

Is there anyone in your family who has married (reached maturity)?

يروى: من كاهل أي من دخل حد الكهولة وقد تزوج

It is narrated: 'min kaahil' meaning one who has entered the limit of maturity and has married.

كاهل الرجل تزوج

A man's 'kaahal' means he got married.

يقول: هل فيهم من أسن وصار كهلا؟

He means: Is there among them one who has aged and become a 'kahil'?

قد يخلف الرجل الرجل في أهله كهلا وغير كهل

A man may succeed another man in his family, whether mature or not mature.

والذي سمعناه من العرب من غير مسألة أن الرجل الذي يخلف الرجل في أهله يقال له الكاهن

And what we have heard from the Arabs without asking is that the man who succeeds another man in his family is called 'al-kaahin'.

وإنما هو كاهن

Rather, it is 'kaahin'.

هل في أهلك من تعتمده للقيام بشأن عيالك الصغار ومن تخلفه ممن يلزمك عوله

Is there anyone in your family whom you rely on to take care of your young children and whom you leave behind, whose expenses are incumbent upon you?

ما هم إلا أصيبية صغار

They are nothing but small children.

تخلف وجاهد فيهم ولا تضيعهم

Stay behind and strive for them, and do not neglect them.

مضر كاهل العرب وسعد كاهل تميم

Mudar is the 'kahil' of the Arabs, and Sa'd is the 'kahil' of Tamim.

وهو مأخوذ من كاهل البعير وهو مقدم ظهره وهو الذي يكون عليه المحمل

And it is taken from the 'kahil' of the camel, which is the front of its back, and it is what the load is placed upon.

وإنما أراد بقوله هل في أهلك من تعتمد عليه في القيام بأمر من تخلف من صغار ولدك لئلا يضيعوا

And what he meant by his saying 'Is there anyone in your family whom you rely on to take care of your young children whom you leave behind, so they are not lost?'

ألا تراه قال له: ما هم إلا أصيبية صغار ، فأجابه وقال: ففيهم فجاهد

Do you not see that he said to him: 'They are nothing but small children,' so he replied and said: 'Then strive for them.'

فلو كان سلمى جاره أو أجاره رماح ابن سعد، رده طائر كهل

And if Salma were his neighbor or protected by Rumah ibn Sa'd, a 'kahil' bird would turn him back.

يقال طار لفلان طائر كهل إذا كان له جد وحظ في الدنيا

It is said that a 'kahil' bird flew for someone if he had seriousness and fortune in the world.

And 'kahil' vegetation: fully grown.

والكاهل: مقدم أعلى الظهر مما يلي العنق وهو الثلث الأعلى فيه ست فقر

And the 'kahil': the front of the upper back next to the neck, which is the upper third containing six vertebrae.

له حارك كالدعص لبده الثرى إلى كاهل، مثل الرتاج المضبب

It has a 'harik' like a dune, its base is the earth, up to the 'kahil', like a barred gate.

والزور ما بطن من الكاهل

And the 'zawr' is what is inside the 'kahil'.

والكاهل من الفرس ما ارتفع من فروع كتفيه

And the 'kahil' of a horse is what rises from the branches of its shoulders.

والحارك فروع الكتفين، وهو أيضا الكاهل

And the 'harik' is the branches of the shoulders, and it is also the 'kahil'.

والمنسج أسفل من ذلك، والكائبة مقدم المنسج

Two fortresses that were for Ma'ad as 'kahilan', and two shoulders that rose above the heights.

Until the 'kawaahil' of the night pass, meaning its beginnings to its middles, likening the night to traveling camels whose necks and fronts advance, followed by their hindquarters and tails.

وقرر الرؤوس على كواهلها أي أثبتها في أماكنها كأنها كانت مشفية على الذهاب والهلاك

And he placed the heads on their 'kawaahil', meaning he fixed them in their places as if they were about to fall and perish.

تميم كاهل مضر وعليها المحمل

Tamim is the 'kahil' of Mudar, and the load is upon it.

وهو عظم مشرف اكتنفه فرعا الكتفين

And it is a prominent bone surrounded by the two branches of the shoulders.

وهو منبت أدنى العرف إلى الظهر، وهو الذي يأخذ به الفارس إذا ركب

And it is the place where the lowest part of the mane grows towards the back, and it is what the rider holds onto when mounting.

And this is said of a stallion during its rutting when you hear a sound coming from its belly.

وإني أتيتك من العراق وإن أمرك كحق الكهول أو كالجعدبة أو كالكعدبة

And I came to you from Iraq, and your affair is like the right of the 'kuhool' or like 'al-ja'dabah' or like 'al-ka'dabah'.

فما زلت أسدي وألحم حتى صار أمرك كفلكة الدرارة وكالطراف الممدد

And I continued to advise and support until your affair became like the spindle of the 'darrarah' and the extended tent.

هي العنكبوت

ويروى: كحق الكهدل، بالدال بدل الواو

And it is narrated: 'ka haqq al-kahdal', with a dal instead of a waw.

ويقال: إنه ثدي العجوز، وقيل: العجوز نفسها، وحقها ثديها

And it is said: It is the breast of an old woman, and it is said: the old woman herself, and her 'haqq' is her breast.

والجعدبة: النفاخات التي تكون من ماء المطر، والكعدبة: بيت العنكبوت

And 'al-ja'dabah': the bubbles that form from rainwater, and 'al-ka'dabah': the spider's web.

وكاهل وكهل وكهيل: أسماء يجوز أن يكون تصغير كهل وأن يكون تصغير كاهل تصغير الترخيم

And 'kaahil', 'kahil', and 'kuhayl': are names, it is possible that they are diminutives of 'kahil' or diminutives of 'kaahil' by elision.

وأن يكون تصغير كهل أولى لأن تصغير الترخيم ليس بكثير في كلامهم

And that it is a diminutive of 'kahil' is more likely because elided diminutives are not common in their speech.
