Al-Jawhari: Al-Qaa'ilah is the singular of Al-Qawa'il, and it refers to tall mountains. Ibn Barrī said: Abu Amr said the singular of Al-Qawa'il is Qaw'alah. The poetry of Al-Afwah is evidence that it is Qaa'ilah, he said: And time, no strength remains upon it... on the head of a tall mountain that four strengths have nurtured. His saying 'four strengths' means four powers.

وعقاب قيعلة: تأوي إلى القواعل أو تعلوها؛ أنشد ثعلب لخالد بن قيس بن منقذ: ليتك، إذ رهنت آل موأله، ... حزوا بنصل السيف عند السبله، وحلقت بك العقاب القيعله.

And an eagle 'qaylah': it takes shelter in or perches upon the mountains. Tha'lab recited for Khalid bin Qais bin Munqidh: If only you, when you pledged the family of Mu'alah... were struck by the sword's edge at the base, and the mountain eagle circled you.

وقيل: عقاب قيعلة وقوعلة بالإضافة أي عقاب موضع يسمى بهذا.

والقعولة في المشي: إقبال القدم كلها على الأخرى، وقيل: هو تباعد ما بين الكعبين وإقبال كل واحدة من القدمين بجماعتها على الأخرى، وقيل: هي مشي ضعيف، وقد قعول في مشيه قعولة، وقيل: القعولة أن يمشي كأنه يغرف التراب بقدميه، يقال: قعول إذا مشى مشية قبيحة كأنه يغرف التراب بقدميه.

وقعول إذا مشى مشية من يحثي التراب بإحدى قدميه على الأخرى لقبل فيهما؛ وقال صخر بن عمير: فإن تريني في المشيب والعله، ... فصرت أمشي القعولى والفنجله، وتارة أنبث نبثا نقثله.

And he 'qa'ala' if he walks like one who throws dirt with one foot onto the other, turning inward. Sakhr bin 'Umayr said: If you see me in old age and weakness... I have come to walk with 'al-qawlah' and 'al-finjalah', and sometimes I move with a shuffling gait.

والفنجلة: مثل القعولة؛ يقال: مر يقعول ويفنجل؛ والنقثلة: أن يثير التراب إذا مشى.

And Al-Finjalah: is like Al-Qawlah. It is said: he passed by walking with 'yaq'al' and 'yafanjal'. And Al-Naqthalah: is kicking up dirt when walking.
