And if it is four moving letters followed by a silent one, like 'faʿlatun', it is the major separator (al-fāṣilah al-kubrā).

And if four moving letters gather, it is the superior one (al-fāḍilah), with the unpointed ḍād, like 'faʿlatun'.

والفصل عند البصريين بمنزلة العماد عند الكوفيين، كقوله عز وجل: إن كان هذا هو الحق من عندك

And the separation (al-faṣl) according to the Basrans is like the support (al-ʿimād) according to the Kufans, as in His saying, Exalted is He: 'If this is the truth from You'.

فقوله هو فصل وعماد، ونصب الحق لأنه خبر كان ودخلت هو للفصل

So His saying 'is' (huwa) is a separation and a support, and 'the truth' (al-ḥaqqa) is in the accusative because it is the predicate of 'kāna', and 'huwa' was introduced for separation.

وأواخر الآيات في كتاب الله فواصل بمنزلة قوافي الشعر، جل كتاب الله عز وجل، واحدتها فاصلة

And the ends of the verses in the Book of God are separators (fawāṣil), like the rhymes of poetry; Glorious is the Book of God, Exalted is He; its singular is a separator (fāṣilah).

And Al-Mufaṣṣal (a section of the Quran) was named Al-Mufaṣṣal because of the shortness of the number of its chapters (suwar) in terms of verses (āy).
