And it was said in explanation of the Hadith: Their best go by death and killing, and their worst remain.
الجعدي: غربل فلان في الأرض إذا ذهب فيها.
Al-Ja'di: So-and-so went about in the land if he traveled in it.
وفي الحديث : أعلنوا النكاح واضربوا عليه بالغربال ؛

عنى بالغربال الدف، شبه الغربال به في استدارته.

وقيل: عنى بالمغربلة أنه ينتقي السادة فيقتلهم فهو على هذا من الأول.

وقال شمر: المغربل المفرق، غربله أي فرقه.
And Shamir said: The dispersed one, to sift him means to disperse him.
وفي حديث مكحول: ثم أتيت الشأم فغربلتها أي كشفت حال من بها وخبرتهم، كأنه جعلهم في غربال ففرق بين الجيد والرديء.
And in the Hadith of Makhl: Then I came to Syria and I sifted it, meaning I revealed the condition of those in it and informed myself of them, as if he put them in a sieve and distinguished between the good and the bad.
وفي حديث ابن الزبير: أتيتموني فاتحي أفواهكم كأنكم الغربيل ؛
And in the Hadith of Ibn Al-Zubayr: You came to me with your mouths open as if you were the sparrow;
قيل: هو العصفور.
